Green Eggs and Ham

Luke Myers

I chose this poem because I thought that it revealed how truly stubborn people can be.
It is a story about a man who refuses to accept change in his life, and although he is not a
human, he does behave as one. The poem starts off with him refusing to eat green eggs and
ham, and this persists throughout the entire story until the end. At the end of the story he finally
agrees to eat the green eggs and ham as long as Sam-I-Am leaves him alone. When he finally
eats the green eggs and ham, he enjoys them and thanks Sam-I-Am for giving them to him. I
think that this poem shows a valuable lesson that many people ought to learn from. It also
seems plausible that this poem was inspired by a father who lost his son. The man keeps on
rejecting the eggs and ham presented to him by Sam-I-Am, who is coincidentally young enough
to be his own son. In the beginning of the poem, he says, “I do not like that Sam-I-Am”,
showing that he doesn’t like him, giving him a bias against the green eggs and ham when
Sam-I-Am tries to give them to him. On top of this, he never explains the reason for disliking
green eggs and ham. It is typical for fathers who lost their son to be harsh on boys that remind
them of their own son while they were alive. This story does have a happy ending though. It
ends with him putting his past behind him and accepting both the green eggs and ham, and
Sam-I-Am.

P.S. This is just speculation and I have no personal relatives or direct family members who
have lost children, nor any who behave differently to a specific group people due to trauma from
past experiences and/or events.
