Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

College life is not easy as you know. Knowledge and skills becomes a

powerful asset in dealing with studies through acquiring resources from different

mediums of instruction in school. Moreover, learning experience should be supported by

innovative ways of teaching and we see technology as an important catalyst for this

matter. In this modernized world now, new inventions and discoveries have contributed

a lot towards our daily lives.

Today, Wi-Fi has become the preferred means for connecting to the

internet without wires at home, in the office, in the hotel, at airports and some even at

the college campuses. Increasingly, Wi-Fi provides access to the internet for many

communities in developing countries. In simple sayings, “Wi-Fi is connectivity”. It

enables the access to internet without the need of cables and wires and especially

comes in handy while travelling. In addition to access the internet, Wi-Fi also make it

possible to connect a device with another, for instance to share document and photos

between computers, access printers and so forth. Everything is quick and easy as it

goes and that’s how it does.

The efficient use of this Wi-Fi really helps a lot especially among the

students who are the center of learning process. According to a survey which was

conducted by Wake Field Research for the Wi-Fi alliance, it helps students to get better
grades. Knowledge becomes broader due to the access of wealth information available

from online resources. Students may not necessarily go to the library and spend time

opening books to acquire information. Wi-Fi is really convenient to use and promote

productivity in our basic life. It cannot only help the teachers to do their jobs, but can

also provide an extra dimension to the learning process. In this case, students learn

beyond their classroom wall which gives improvement both the student motivation and

overall engagement with subjects inside and outside of the classroom. In addition to, it

also increases communication between everyone and enhance the learning

environment with regards to the students and teachers relationship.

Collaboration is easier in learning and peer study enablement is possible.

Study skills of the students would be enhancing base on their different learning needs

by using media as a personalized instruction. However, the use also of Wi-Fi in college

studies is cost saving and has economic advantage in coping up homework’s,

assignments, projects, seat works, reports, and many other task commonly given at

school.

Furthermore, technology is really powerful but just keeps it in mind that it

is just a tool. In terms of getting the students attention of working together and

motivating them, the teacher is the most important. Learning is a continuing process

and it’s up on us on how we open our mind and hearts to the lessons we get on our

daily basis of living in this world. Thus, the challenge is to use it right and not merely on

things which can’t pave our way to success. To pass all subjects is the aim of most
college students especially among engineering students who have a long voyage of

journey ahead to pass on. Giving them a good quality of education to become more

competitive, the implementation of Wi-Fi network in assessing learning of the students

has much great contribution not just for the students good future but also for the

integrity and dignity of the school. The further discussion and research for this study will

be tackled in the following chapters.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is focused on the discussion of the review literature closely

related to the beneficial effect and importance of WIFI to facilitate leaner which helps
the Engineering students to improve and expand educational activities.

In the recent surveys conducted for the Wi-Fi Alliance that conducted by
Wakefield on (2008), fully 90% of us college students believe that Wi-Fi is essential to
an education as a classroom or a computer. That it is such a great help them get better
grades.

And according to the studies of the Online Colleges, a website that puts
students in touch with colleges offering robust online education experiences by Shaylin
Clark on (December 25, 2011). That Wi-Fi was one of the most important pieces of
technology for students: 75% said that wifi access improves their grades,90% said that
it was essential to education as a classroom or computer, and 60% said they would not
go to school they knew did not offer free wifi. This study also estimated that wifi will
present on 99% of college campuses by (2003).

A recent summary of Wireless Higher Education (2002) of 392

EDUCAUSE member institutions found that wireless Internet in higher education in the
U.S and Canada “has moved from an interesting curiosity to an appealing technology
alternative for potential users”.

Wireless technology is quickly gaining a foothold on many campuses as a

means to achieve mobility and “anywhere, anytime” access.

Boemer (2002) listed some characteristics of wireless networking campus:

mobility, installation speed and simplicity, installation flexibility, reduced cost of
ownership, and scalability. Wireless is affecting not just the classroom environment and
technology access, but also the actual activities of learning and teaching.

Wi-Fi usage rates per capital are now growing at faster rates in our
countries than in rich countries (Pink and Kenny, 2003). According to Johan Lurdin
(2010) as the past 10 years the capacity of a regular commercial of the self laptop has
certainly increased. So, in today’s differences capacity between a desktop machine and
a laptop is rather limited, at least in relation to the way that most of us use our
computers. At the same time, the weight and the price has dropped significantly. It is
difficult to get reliable and global data on computer sales, but in 2005 it is the year
where laptop started to sell nor than desktop computers, (Singer, 2005). Given this
widespread adoption of mobile technology among students, combined with increased
possibilities for network access (such as wifi connections in classrooms and across
college campuses) and extended battery life, it is understandable that more and more
students bring laptops to classroom. In this case, the students make computers an
important part in education activities.

Today, teachers expect students to deliver papers written on computers,

expecting to use the digital sources of university, libraries, read emails to get
information about schedule to upload their assignments online. And there has been an
increase usage of consortium with in the campus as the usage increases the cost
benefit of electronic resources in the given constitution will prove to be effective.

In additional, Egar Figuera (2008), started that “Wifi has become universal
expectation among college students and their attitudes towards technology and a good
indication of change underway in how a society learn, work and communicate”.

For students today, getting connected no longer mean reserving a station

at the computer laboratory or going to the library. Undergraduates log-in too many
different places with having a free Wi-Fi access. It’s a given that students always adapt
rapidly to changes of technology and circumstances is the wide availability of Wi-Fi
leads a better academic performance because it contribute a lot to engineering
students.

College of Education, Ohio University (June, 2004) stated that, “Student

centered learning theory was used as theoretical framework. Web survey as semi-
structure interviewing we employed. The research found that access internet can
promote student-centered bearing by providing a choice of location, better learning
environment, flexibility of time, easy involvement and improved communication with
instructors and other learners.

In the study of J.B. Mathews on (March 2005), state the importance of

wireless services and to education leaders.

Mobility boosts interactivity, reduces problems

That wireless technology brings the primary benefit of mobility to

traditional class activities. For example, wireless connections to a classroom eliminate
the need to run wires through thick, fire-retardant walls. Students and teachers laptop
computers with wireless cards can be moved wherever needed in the local area and still
access educational materials on the school server. Classroom sets of laptops or hand-
held allows students to practice skills and complete writing tasks; many application track
each students progress for grading and collect data to be analyzed for school report. In
addition, mobile sets of computers give students one-to-one access. Students can
continue to collaborate on a class project with other students while outside the
classroom, school or campus and can send the results to their instructors from
anywhere they find a “hot spot” (wireless public access, increasingly offered by
business, libraries and other facilities).

Learning activities are more flexible

In the study of SREB J.B Mathews (march 2005). Where it is potential using the
unique advantages of advance wireless technology to do things very differently and to
do to different things to improve and expand educational activities. A phrase that is
often used to capture this vision is “anytime, anywhere learning”. With reliable, high
capacity, secure wireless connectivity to online educational resources and services,
many types of learning activities can be supported whenever and wherever they are
needed. Scientific data can be collected, stored and transmitted to the appropriate
research from remote locations. Instructors can use wireless devices to question
students, and students can their responses back to the teacher-thus engaging all
students and providing an instant check of student learning or miscues. Many time and
location constraints of traditional educational structures can be overcome.

Community relationship can improve

In addition, the growing ubiquity of wireless services offers a special

opportunity to build relationship with the local community. For example, in many areas
collaboration between a school, college or university and the surrounding community
may be necessary to establish the initial wireless infrastructure, because of cost or
technical considerations. The resulting wireless connections can then be used by the
school or college to expand its educational services to the region, and all segments of
the local education community may find ways to operate together in a more seamless
manner. Some universities and school districts already are deploying-or plan to deploy-
wireless services to nearby government offices, home and businesses. Many schools
already offer the use of their computer access to community members, and some offer
after-school classes to the public to improve work force skills and increase community
access to the Internet. By J.B Mathews SRHED (2005).

conclusion and offers recommendation based on the findings of the study.

The study utilized the survey approach of research precisely the descriptive
method. The said approach is use as much as the principal rationale of the study was to
figure out the student’s perception of how wifi can help them in assessing learning.
Students from the second year level of engineering in CPSC were asked to fill up a
survey questionnaire. In order to determine the factors that affect student's academic
performance, the quantitative research techniques were used particularly the Likert
Scale.

A survey questionnaire was prepared for students. This instrument was used to
determine the different views and perceptions of the students. The survey questionnaire
are composed of two sections. The first section of the survey questionnaire gives the
profile of the student while the second section addresses the statements mostly
encountered and felt by the students pertaining to wireless fidelity. The questionnaire is
consists of 8 items as indicators. There are 55 respondents taken for the student
respondents.

As to the students perception that wireless internet helps them to locate and
collect information from a variety of sources got the highest points and ranked first with
a weighted mean of 4.24. In our modernized world now, technology becomes a powerful
asset in assessing learning of the students and wifi is helpful tool to gain knowledge
from accessing different learning needs of the students found in the internet.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Most of the engineering students strongly agree that wifi helps them to locate

and collect information from a variety of sources which has a weighted mean of

4.24.

2. In the total weighted mean of 3.24, engineering students much agree that there

is no much difference between wireless internet and wired internet for their

studies.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Within the context of the findings and conclusion, the following recommendations

are forwarded:

1. Students must be aware that there is much difference between wireless

internet and wired internet in their studies.
