4 LMS Test.Lab Installation manual

Chapter 1 Preface

Chapter 1 Preface
This manual contains the information required to install the LMS Test.Lab
software on Windows operating systems.

It includes information on the installation and configuration of the Desktop

Dataservers, StartPoint Server and license manager.

In addition, it contains information regarding the configuration of the LMS

Instruments acquisition hardware. The LMS Test.Lab acquisition software can
be used with the LMS SCADAS III, LMS Mobile,LMS SCADAS Lab and
SCADAS XS frontends.

It applies to LMS Test.Lab software and is directed towards the person who is
responsible for installing and maintaining the programs at your site.

In this manual the following conventions have been used.

Text inside square brackets [...] indicates a button. For example, click on [Next ]
to continue.

A different font is used to indicate:

messages produced by the Operating System or by the LMS Test.Lab
software,
 user input commands
 file or directory names
All these are written in this font.

Angled brackets {...} represent a string that can be different on (and so specific
to) your particular computer system. For example, the folder where Setup will
install files is:

{installation folder}\LMS\LMS Test.Lab 15A

Important statements are shown as:

Note: It is advisable that you read the Installation Manual before continuing
with the installation procedure.

Borrowing Licenses............................................................19
This section deals with the licensing of the LMS Test.Lab software. The
licensing is managed by the RLM license manager, which can manage both
node-locked and floating licenses.

LMS Test.Lab can be licensed through a license server or directly through a

license file. In the latter case, there is no need to set up a license server.

The basic components to set up a license server are:

 the license manager daemon
 the vendor daemon
 the license file
 an optional hardware key
 the application program: LMS Test.Lab.
The basic components needed with a direct usage of a license file (without
license server) are:
 the license file
 the application program: LMS Test.Lab
This section serves as an introduction to these components, describes how the
licensing system works and what needs to be done in order to be able to access
your LMS Test.Lab licenses.

For more detailed information, please read the RLM End-Users Manual which
is available on the installation DVD under:

\Documents\ RLM_License_Administration.htm

Section 2.1 Terminology

License manager daemon

The license manager daemon (RLM.exe) is the process that handles the initial
request from a client application program. The application contacts the license
manager daemon at the port number that forms part of the license file or
hardware key for the application, and tells it which vendor daemon it needs to

Rev 15A 7
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

access. The license manager daemon (rlm) finds the correct master vendor
daemons and returns that information to the client.

The license manager daemon (rlm) is also responsible for starting and re-
starting vendor daemons as required.

Vendor daemon

There is one vendor daemon for each vendor who has RLM licenses products
on the network. When a client application requests a license, the vendor daemon
checks on the licenses to see which are either consumed or available and returns
the information to the client application. The vendor daemon also monitors
which users are consuming licences. Communication between the client
applications and the vendor daemons is usually achieved through TCP/IP
network connections.

License file

This is the means whereby license information is stored and accessed. It will be
supplied by LMS and contains information about server nodes and actual
product licenses. There are two types of license files, one for usage with a
server, and one to use as license file without a server. The name of the license
file is LMS_<HOSTNAME>_<HOSTID>.lic for usage with license servers and
LMS_NO_SERVER.lic otherwise.

Hardware key (dongle)

Otherwise known as a dongle. This is an optional tool used to protect a license.

It identifies the system when a node-locked license is used and must be inserted
into USB port on the system to be used. An alternative to using a hardware key,
is to use the unique ID of a network interface card (LAN address).

A (Sentinel) system driver provides communication between the client

application and the key.

Note: This driver must be installed on every system on which the application is
to run if a hardware key is to be used for the licensing.

You can install this driver:

Solution 1:
Select the dongle installation during the license server installation
Solution 2:
After the LMS Test.Lab installation. Select ‘Start -> All Programs -> LMS
RLM 11.1 License Server -> FLEXId_Dongle_Driver_Installer’.
Solution 3:

Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

From the Installation DVD via \Drivers\Licensing Dongle Drivers: copy the
executable from the RLM folder locally on a hard disk and run.

Section 2.2 Installing the RLM license manager software

An installation procedure must be executed on each system that will act as a

license server. During this process you must choose to “Install RLM server…"
component of the software package. If the license server is used to distribute
licenses over the network, the availability of these systems is essential for the
operation of the LMS Test.Lab software, so they need to be systems that are
always present in the network.

If LMS Test.Lab uses a license file ‘LMS_NO_SERVER.lic’ with uncounted

licenses only, there is no need to install a license server.

Before the license server can be started and you can access your LMS Test.Lab
licenses, you must be in possession of the license file for your license servers
‘LMS_<HOSTNAME>_<HOSTID>.lic’. The license file will be delivered via
e-mail.

When installing the LMS Test.Lab software on other systems, you must know
the name (identity) of the system which has been defined as the license server
for that client.

We will describe the different steps of the installation with an explanation of the
available options. LMS Test.Lab 15A is shipped with RLM server 11.1, but will
also work in combination with older RLM installations.

Rev 15A 9
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

Step 1
The Welcome screen for installing the LMS RLM License Server appears.

Step 2
Click [Next ]. The "Select Installation Folder" screen opens. If an earlier version
of RLM is installed, you will see an upgrade dialog. Please go to the update the
license server section for more details.

A default destination path is filled in. If needed, it can be changed. The path in
the picture might be different depending on the operating system you are
working on.

Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

Step 3
Click [Next] to open the "Select License File" screen.

With the upper part of this dialog, you have the ability to select the license file
the license server will use. When requesting a license file for a license server,
LMS will provide you a file ‘LMS_<HOSTNAME>_<HOSTID>.lic’. The
installation will copy the file to the location specified by the selection in the
bottom part of the dialog.
If you don’t have any license file yet, you can leave the input field blank. The
installation will point to the location selected by the bottom part of the dialog.
Once you have retrieved the license file, you can copy it by hand in the
mentioned folder. To easily retrieve this location, the installer will create a
shortcut to it in the start menu. After installation, see ‘Start -> All Programs ->
LMS RLM 11.1 License server -> LMS license folder’.
In the bottom part of the dialog, you can specify the destination of the license
file. This is also the folder where the server will look for a license file.
Select option "Configure the license server to look for license files in
{CommonAppDataFolder}\LMS\Licensing and copy the license file to this
location – Recommended".
The default place to store the license file is the folder {Common Application
Data}\LMS\Licensing. {Common application data} can be different, depending
on the OS.
On Windows 7, the license file will be stored in the folder
"C:\ProgramData\LMS\Licensing". If this option is selected, the desired file
will be copied to that folder.
Select option "Configure the license server to look for license files in a specific
directory and copy the license file to this location:", if you want to override the
default location, and browse to an existing folder. The installation will copy the
earlier mentioned license file to this location, and the server will use this folder
to look for license files.

Rev 15A 11
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

Note: If no license file is available, you can still continue with the software
installation. Simply clear the input field and click [Next ] to continue. The
server will look for license files in the application data folder.

Step 4
Click [Next ] to continue. This opens the options dialog.

The option "Do not allow to shut down the license server from a remote
computer" in the upper part of the dialog can be selected to disable the
shutdown of the server. If you use the web-interface of the server or the
command line of the tool from remote, it is possible to shut down the license
server. If you want to block this, you have to select this option.
In the lower part of the dialog, the user is given the possibility to define the
location where the log files are stored.

Section 2.3 Upgrade a previous license server

When you have a previous version of the license server installed, this will be
detected by the system. The installation package will behave differently in this
case, and offer the option to install the new license server with the same options
as the currently installed server.

After the welcome screen, you will see following dialog:

This dialog will only come up, if an earlier version of RLM was detected, When
pressing continue, the settings of the previous version will be taken, and an
uninstall of that previous version is initiated.

Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

During the installation, a message might pop up:

Please click [ok], a reboot will not be needed,

If some files were locked during the de-installation, following screen will
appear. If you do an upgrade from version 9.3.0 or later, this dialog will not be
present since no files remain locked on the system.

Rev 15A 17
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

When pressing [Finish], the installation will store information on your system to
resume the upgrade. The installation will stop in order to free the locked files.
At this moment, there is no installation of RLM present on your system. To
complete the upgrade, you have to restart the installation manually.

Restarting the installation will show following screen after the welcome screen:

This screen means that you are in the upgrade procedure, and that the settings of
your previous version were retrieved. [Next] will guide you through the rest of
the regular installation steps where you can specify the dongle drivers and the
firewall settings.

Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

Once the installation is finished, the new license server runs with the same
settings as the previous one did.

Section 2.4 After the installation

The installation copies the necessary files on your system, and starts a service.
This service represents the license server, and runs on port 5053. From within
LMS Test.Lab, you can connect to it by supplying the server name in the
installation, or after the installation in the application at
Tools/Options/licensing.

The license server has a built-in webserver, running on port 5054. When
connecting to it with your browser (http://{servername}:5054) you can do all
kind of actions on the webserver such as re-reading the license file, viewing the
log file etc. A more detailed explanation is present in the GUI of the webserver.
In your Start menu, there is a shortcut to access the webserver on your computer
at ‘Start -> All Programs -> LMS RLM 11.1 License server -> RLM server
Info’, but it is also possible to access it over the network.

When using dongles, there is no need to do a re-read of your license file to

recognize the dongle. The license server itself will detect the change in dongles,
and will change the supported features for you.

Section 2.5 Borrowing Licenses

What is Borrowing?

Borrowing must not be considered as a separate licensing type next to Node-

locked and Floating licenses. Borrowing will be enabled for all LMS Test.Lab
licenses. The Borrowing of licenses is a real plus because the borrowed Floating
licenses are no longer bound to a network anymore. The Borrowing is possible
for large campaigns up to 28 days.

The term, RLM uses for Borrowing, is "Roaming". In Test.Lab we continue to

speak about Borrowing, but when you read RLM documentation, you will
encounter the term "Roaming". Both benefit from the same meaning.

Ease of use

The Borrowing is now handled by the LMS interface to increase user

friendliness.

Availability

Borrowing is only possible with Floating licenses having the BORROW

keyword in it.

Rev 15A 19
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

License requirements

To be able to borrow licenses, the license file must have following

requirements:
The LICENSE that contains ‘max_roam’ in its properties will be able to be
borrowed to offline systems.
Node-locked features can only be borrowed by systems that are mentioned
in the HOSTID for that feature.
License Example:

# TL-DTP.21.1 LMS Test.Lab Desktop - Advanced

LICENSE lms lms_tl_dtp_21 13.0 permanent 1 share=i min_timeout=900

max_roam=28 start=24-sep-2012 issuer="LMS International"

customer="Licensed to: LMS International" issued=25-sep-2012

options=LMS_TL_DTP_21 _ck=ccd6325c5d
sig="60PG4580G1PFGE5UHCABABG0H7
TPUQ523NM047A008A2DUX6B0UPXY3JDT6JJDRNHXPGBMMUDG1G"

How to borrow a license?

The following procedure explains how to borrow licenses:

a. Make sure you have a valid connection to the license server which contains
the licenses to be borrowed.

b. On the system that wants to borrow a license offline, start up the License
Borrowing tool:

‘Start -> All Programs -> Lms Test.Lab 15A-> Tools ->Licensing ->
LMSLicense Borrowing’ or startup the "License Borrowing tool' from within an
application.

20 LMS Test.Lab Installation manual

Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

Licenses will be borrowed from the server used to run LMS Test.Lab
applications.

c. Select in the first column the workbook(s) and/or add-in(s) to borrow.

d. Enter a borrowing end date (and eventually time). The borrowed licenses will
be available until that date. You can only borrow for complete days.

e. Click on the [Borrow] button to start the borrowing. From now on, the
borrowed licenses are available locally on the computer having borrowed the
licenses. The list of borrowed licenses is obtained on sorting the "Borrowed
Since" or "Until" columns.

Remark: The list of borrowed licenses can be saved by clicking the [Save
Borrowed List] button. This is useful if it is needed to regularly borrow the
same set of applications.

How to borrow licenses from a saved list of workbook(s) and/or add-in(s)?

Load the list by clicking on the [Load Borrowed List] button and browse to a
saved list of borrowed applications. Then provide a borrowing end date and
click the [Borrow] button.

Returning borrowed licenses

At the end of the borrow-period, the license will be automatically available

again at the license server, even when the offline system will stay offline for a
longer time. At the same time, the borrowed license is not useable anymore for
the offline system. It’s not necessary to make a connection again with the
License server to return the borrowed licenses.

How to return borrowed licenses earlier?

a. Connect to the license server network.

Rev 15A 21
Chapter 2 LMS Test.Lab Licensing

b. Close the open LMS applications.

c. Start the 'License Borrowing tool':

‘Start -> All Programs -> Lms Test.Lab 15A-> Tools -> Licensing ->
LMSLicense Borrowing’ or from within the application.

d. Select in the first column the borrowed licenses you want to return.

e. Click on the button [Return].

Important Remarks

Borrowing is not technically combinable with Value Based Licensing: You

cannot borrow tokens.

It’s still possible using the borrowed license, even when connected to your
network. However, nobody else will be able to use your license when your
workstation is turned off.

Known issues and limitations

In case of disk crash: If you borrow licenses for 4 weeks, but your computer
disk crashes after two hours and it is impossible to restart it, the licenses will
still be blocked for 4 weeks. For security reasons this issue cannot be addressed.

Advanced mode

When borrowing an application license, a license for desktop is borrowed

automatically as well and if needed, a frontend license. This is for the user to be
able to use the application out of the network. In some cases, this is not needed.
This can be the case when the user already has the required licenses on his
computer. “Advanced mode” gives this possibility. When activating this mode,
it is the user's responsibility to borrow the needed licenses.

a DVD or a downloaded installation package (Web Distribution or ISO)
containing the LMS Test.Lab software.
a license file (for a license server or for direct use).
a hardware key if you are using this to protect the licenses.
Approximately 3 GB free disk space (without demo data). The installation
package will perform a dedicated disk space check before the start of the
installation.
For a downloaded installation package, approximately 1.5 GB for LMS
Test.Lab 15A and 400 MB for LMS Test.Lab DataPlugin for ActivePictures
are temporarily needed on the drive hosting the user’s Application Data
folder. Those installation packages can be downloaded from our support
site. They have a smaller size due to higher compression and need an
uncompressing phase. The uncompressed files are located under the user’s
Application Data folder (for example
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\LMS). Those installations for web
distribution do not contain non LMS redistributables. The installation
package checks, at the beginning, on the prerequisites for installing LMS
Test.Lab or LMS Test.Lab Active Pictures. If those prerequisites are not
available, the installation package will invite to download them from
Microsoft websites.

Note: Only users who have administrative privileges can perform all the
software installation.

To install the LMS Test.Lab 15A software, insert the LMS Test.Lab 15A DVD
in the DVD Drive. The Installation program will start automatically. If auto-
start is prohibited, launch the Windows Explorer, double-click the icon that
corresponds to the DVD Drive and double-click "autorun.exe". A dialog
appears, listing all applications available for installation.

In order to run any LMS Test.Lab application, a license server must be available
in the network or you must have a license file for direct use (without the need of
a license server). If you are using a license server, make sure an appropriate
license server is up and running before installing LMS Test.Lab 15A. To install
a license server, select "Install RLM License Server...". Licensing of the
software is managed using RLM. For more information about RLM, go to
chapter 2 section licensing terminology.

To install any LMS Test.Lab application, select "Install Test.Lab ...". If you
have downloaded an installation package, a double-click on the installation
package will have the same behavior. The Configuration of a LMS Data Server
Client, Server or StartPoint Server is also part of this manual. For guidelines,
how to configure and install a LMS Data Server, go to chapter 4 "Configuration
of LMS Test.Lab".

"LMS Data Plugin for Active Pictures" needs only to be installed if you do not
install LMS Test.Lab. The usage of Active Pictures does not require any
license.

For information on reinstalling, removing or modifying the installed software,

go to the section on changing the installed software in this chapter.

Step 3
User configuration Folder

The "User Configuration Folder" screen allows you to specify the base path
where the LMS Test.Lab software will place its local files. Local files are files
that are saved by the user (layout files, configuration files, etc.).
The folder that you choose for placing local files can be any folder. It does not
necessarily need to be a subfolder of the installation folder. It can be any folder
that is convenient for the user and where the user has read and write
permissions. The folder entered here is the base folder. For TL
"\Userconfiguration\$LOGIN\Lms Test.Lab 15A\" will be added, with $LOGIN
replaced by the username of the logged on user.
Click [Next ] to continue.

Step 4
Group configuration folder

Defining a base folder for a "group configuration folder" is interesting if you

want to share user defined information like print formats, pictures, icons, etc.
with a group of users.
If you want to use a group folder, select "Yes, use a group folder". A default
location is suggested. If you wish to use a different location, click [Browse ] to
search for the required location. The selected folder will be the base folder for
the group configuration. The installation of Test,Lab will append
"\GroupConfiguration\LMS Test.Lab 15A\" to the base folder.
When using a group folder, please choose the file access priority.
This folder is hierarchically, by default, placed between the central and local
directory. It allows a group of users to make use of an extra (write protected)
folder without modifying the central directory. A group folder can contain
configuration files, as well as project templates, documentation templates,
picture layouts, print formats, search criteria, data sets and processing sets.
When LMS Test.Lab needs to open a configuration file, it will search for it in
the local folder. If the file is not locally available, LMS Test.Lab will look for it
in the group folder, and finally in the central folder. A modified configuration is
always saved locally. When LMS Test.Lab needs any other file (print formats,
picture layouts, etc.), it makes a combination of all the files available, starting
with the local one, then the group one and then the central one. In this way, the
result is a union of all the items in the 3 files.
Example: A user wants to select a print format. LMS Test.Lab makes a list of
the print formats available in the local folder, adds the print formats of the
group folder and then adds the ones of the centralfolder. In case a print format
with the same name exists, both in the local and group folders, only the one in
the local folder is available in the list. A modified print format is always saved
in the local folder.

Rev 15A 31
Chapter 3 Installation LMS Test.Lab 15A

Note: LMS Test.Lab never copies files to the group folder. This has to be done
by a system administrator.

It is possible to change the default hierarchy: local folder -> group folder ->
central folder. Please select "Prioritize the group folder" in the drop down list.
In that case, the hierarchy becomes "group folder -> local folder -> central
folder". What happens in this case is that the folders and files located in the
group folder are copied to the local folder. It means that if a file exists in the
local folder with the same name as in the group folder, it is overwritten.

Note: When the group folder has priority, the files that have the same name in
the local folder as in the group folder are overwritten.

After installation, you will find HD Acoustic Camera as a shortcut in Start menu
‘Start -> All Programs -> Lms Test.Lab 15A -> Test.Lab Acoustic’. Choose the
shortcut that corresponds to your array.
A new format of "bdd" file is used, which permits to exceed the limitation size
of 2 GB for one BDD. When opening an existing BDD file, the user is advised
that there is a new format, and the software launches an upgrade, creating a new
file with new format, and opens it.
For "mybase.bdd" which uses old format. A new file, "_64mybase.bdd" will be
created and opened. The old format file is not modified.
The user can archive original file, and rename new file with old name, and then
return to the software to process its data. (The ‘_64’ is just a reminder of the
upgrade: further created new files will not have this prefix.)
User created BDD templates (the upgrade does not concern LMS Test.Lab ‘.tpl’
files) for HD Acoustic camera can be upgraded by selecting them using
"Browse" function of HD Acoustic Camera. Once upgraded, exit LMS Test.Lab
and restart it after having renamed "_64[templatename].bdd" to remove the
‘_64’ prefix.
Youcan also use command line interface. The syntax is :

When using a license server, as an option, you can choose to use a specific port
number by using the following syntax: "{portnumber{@{servername}" (e.g.
"5053@MyServer" ). Using a specific port number is only necessary in the case
where another application is already using RLM software. Every RLM server
should communicate with its respective clients via a different port number. If
you make use of a port number, you should make sure that the port number you
define here is also reflected in the license file. This is absolutely necessary,
otherwise licenses will not be granted.

LMS Test.Lab will prompt you when starting up for the location of the new
license file (when the old license file is not available anymore).

Section 3.4 LMS Test.Lab Command-Line Installation

LMS Test.Lab 15A uses Microsoft Standard Installation (MSI), a market

standard product that also facilitates command-line installations. The MSI

Rev 15A 49
Chapter 3 Installation LMS Test.Lab 15A

allows highly flexible installations. A vast amount of installation parameters

(from the default install path, to whether or not to perform a silent installation)
can be altered to create a range of different types of installations, based on the
same .msi file. Specifying command-line arguments to the .msi file allows
changing the installation parameters. Not all, but the most common installation
parameters can be changed in this way. These include the default path, the silent
installation option and specific feature selection, presented in this document.
For all command-line parameters, we refer to the official "Microsoft technet and
msdn" website.

Section 3.4.1 Silent installation

The Msi installer (msiexec.exe), takes several parameters (try none, to receive a
list). One of these is the silent install parameter “/qn”. When passed along, this
parameter will lead to a totally silent installation with absolutely no user
interaction at all. The parameter “/qb” will perform an installation with only
progress bars but no interaction with the end user. Other gradations of silent
installations exist. For these, we refer to the official Microsoft website
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367988.aspx).

For example:

To install LMS Test.Lab 15A silently, using its default settings, the following
command line should be used: (open a command prompt at the installer’s
location). The installer is available under the \Installations folder on the DVD).

> “LMS Test.Lab setup.exe” /qn

To install it silently, but under a different installation folder, you could override
the default parameter, using the APPDIR= argument:

> “LMS Test.Lab setup.exe” /qn APPDIR=”D:\Program Files\LMS\LMS Test.Lab”

Both the bootstrapper "LMS Test.Lab setup.exe" and the related msi "LMS
Test.Lab.msi" can be used to pass installation parameters. When the
bootstrapper is used, the parameters are passed to msi package.

This method can be used for installing LMS Test.Lab 15A and LMS Data
Plugin for Active Pictures.

Note: Please notice that LMS Test.Lab 15A requires the application "LMS
Configuration and Unit system 2.2" to be installed first. To install "LMS
Units Editor 2.1" silently, use the same approach as for the LMS Test.Lab
package, for example:

> "LMS Configuration and unit system 2.2 Setup.exe" /qn

50 LMS Test.Lab Installation manual

Chapter 3 Installation LMS Test.Lab 15A

Section 3.4.2 Feature Selection

The installer allows selection of install-features from the command-line. This is

particularly useful for silent installation.

There are four main parameters to manipulate the features:

ADDLOCAL : Only install these features, locally

REMOVE : Only remove these features

ADDDEFAULT : Only install these features, using their default configurations

REINSTALL : Only reinstall/repair these features.

For example, to install the Modal Impact and Acoustic Intensity package
silently:

> “LMS Test.Lab setup.exe” /qn APPDIR=”D:\Program Files\LMS\LMS Test.Lab”

ADDLOCAL="TLSTR.21.2,TLACT.26.2"

The ADDLOCAL contains the names of features to install. Typically, the name
of the feature is the product code without the dash. In this case, product TL-
STR.21.2 Modal Impact results in the feature name TLSTR.21.2; the same for
Acoustic Intensity.

Please notice that the feature name for LMS Desktop is TLDTP.0x.1 like
presented in the user interface of the installation package.

The feature names for not product related entries are:

“Help” for installing LMS Test.Lab help files. This will install both the
online help (chm files) and help files for printing (pdf files).
“Documentation_Theory” for installing pdf files presenting the theory
behind the LMS Test.Lab applications.
“Test.Lab_DemoData” for installing LMS Test.Lab demonstration data.
To check whether the parameters have the desired effect, leave out the /qn
parameter and start an installation with a user interface. On the feature-selection
screen, the configuration can be evaluated.

Note: Note that the features are case-sensitive, and if one is not found, the
installation is automatically aborted.

Section 3.4.3 Silent Uninstalls

In the same way an installation can be silent, the removal of the installation, or

Rev 15A 51
Chapter 3 Installation LMS Test.Lab 15A

specific features, can be done likewise. For removing the entire installation, the
parameter /i can be simply replaced by /x. For feature removal, the /i parameter
still needs to be applied, but instead of ADDLOCAL, REMOVE can be used.

For example:

To silently remove the entire Test.Lab installation:

> "LMS Test.Lab setup.exe" /qn /x //

The // is required. If not set, the boostrapper will replace it with /i {path to the
msi file}. This is the reason why it is not required when installing silently to
specify the location of the msi file.

To only uninstall the Impact Testing Package use following:

> “LMS Test.Lab setup.exe” /qn APPDIR=”D:\Program Files\LMS\LMS Test.Lab”

REMOVE="TLSTR.21.2,TLACT.26.2"

This command will trigger a ‘modifying installation’.

Note: Removing all features has not the same behavior as removing LMS
Test.Lab 15A since production tools are always installed.

Section 3.4.4 Properties customization

Like the APPDIR parameter used above, several other properties exist. The
most important are summarized here. For all possible parameters, we refer to
the official Microsoft website, found in the references.
APPDIR: path where you want LMS Test.Lab to be installed in Properties
specific for the LMS Configuration and unit system
LOCALFOLDERPATH: path where you want the local folder to be installed.

GROUPFOLDERENABLED: "0" means not to use a group folder, "1" means

you want to use a group folder. In that case you must also specify a valid value
for GROUPFOLDERPATH and optionally for
GROUPFOLDERFILEACCESSPRIORITY. The default is "0", no use of a
group folder.

GROUPFOLDERPATH: path to the group folder if used.

GROUPFOLDERFILEACCESSPRIORITY: The two options are

PrioritizeLocalFolder and PrioritizeGroupFolder

Step 1
The welcome screen appears

Step 2
Click [Next ] to begin.

You need to specify which port the StartPoint Server will be using. Other
systems that need to connect to this StartPoint Server must use the same port
number.
Step 3
If you did not install a StartPoint Server on this system, you need to specify the
same port number as you specified on the system where the StartPoint Server
runs.
The default number for the Rev 15A release is 6652.
If a problem with the StartPoint Server occurs, you can reconfigure it. Selecting
the option to re-initialize the StartPoint Server allows you to redefine the
StartPoint server from scratch.

Rev 15A 61
Chapter 4 Configuration of the LMS Test.Lab

Note: By doing this, all Startpoints will be removed from the StartPoint Server
(also the ones from other LMS Data Servers).

Step 4
By default, the communication method is set to “Use computer's name". If you
want to use IP numbers for communication, you can specify this as the
communication method.
The next steps of the wizard allow you to configure the LMS Data Server or
pool of LMS Data Servers on your system. They only appear if you have a LMS
Data Server installed.
By default, the system name is used with the default port number (9989) and the
Pool ID (0).
Then the system resolves its name to the currently corresponding IP number
before registering the LMS Data Server with this IP number.

Note: If you use IP numbers and this number changes (e.g. when you use
Dynamic Host Communication Protocol), you must run again the Network Data
Access Configuration Wizard.

Step 5
To define a pool of LMS Data Servers, in the “Port numbers for DataServer”
field, more than one port should be typed in (like in the snapshot above).
The pool ID’s can start from 0. In this case the first port (9989) will also be
available for Test.Lab.
If the “Pool IDs start from” value is not “0” the pool of DataServers cannot be
used by Test.Lab.

Note: If Tec.Manager and Test.Lab must be used together, then the value of
“Pool IDs start from” must be “0”.

Step 6
Click [Next ].

Step 7
Specify where the StartPoint Server is running, and if necessary change the port
number.
If you installed a StartPoint Server on this system, the defaults are OK. If the
StartPoint Server is running on another system, make sure you specify the
correct server and port number.
Step 8
A last step is to define the Startpoints on this LMS Data Server.
Click the [Add] button to define new Startpoints.

Step 9

Rev 15A 63
Chapter 4 Configuration of the LMS Test.Lab

Specify the name of the Startpoint and the correct path.

Note: The name of a Startpoint must be unique in the network, meaning that
there cannot exist two Startpoints with the same name, even if they refer to a
different LMS Data Server.

Step 10
Click the [OK ] button

Note: More than one Startpoint can be defined.

Step 11
To modify an existing Startpoint, select it from the list and click the [Modify]
button.
Step 12
To delete a Startpoint, select it from the list and click the [Remove] button.
Step 13
When you have finished making changes, click the [Finish] button.
Step 14
Finally, the data transmission will finish.

Section 4.1.4 Default firewall settings on Windows 7 or higher

When running the Network Data Access Configuration Wizard or when using
the LMS Data Server client add-in in the LMS Test.Lab 15A Desktop, several
Alert messages might pop up:

You have to select “unblock" to allow LMS Test.Lab to run properly.

Section 4.2 File Handling

Improvements have been made to ease updating to newer release versions. We

also made it possible to define a priority setting on the read mechanism of files.

During running the installation wizard you have the possibility to define the
reading priority of your local or group folder. This option is only available when
you have a Group Folder defined. When choosing to prioritize your local folder,
files will be read from the local folder prior to the group folder. Note that
writing files will in all instances be done locally. If the Group Folder was
prioritized, all files from the group folder will be copied to your local folder at
every start-up of the software. This will make sure that files from the group
folder will be accessed prior to the locally saved files. This reading mechanism
can be modified also in Tools -> Options after the installation was completed.

If a new release of Test.Lab is installed it should be possible to reuse or copy

the configuration from a previous release. Only during the first launch of your
new installation, you will be prompted with the option to choose a revision and
copy settings from a previous revision. So, either you choose the default settings
and nothing will be copied, or you select a previous revision in a dropdown
menu which will then copy the local folder from that specific revision to the
currently installed release.

Note: Combining and renaming folders will also be automatically handled by

Rev 15A 65

this tool. All settings of which folders that should be copied and merged can
also be defined manually.

Section 4.3 LMS Frontend

The LMS Test.Lab acquisition and control software can be used with the LMS
SCADAS III, mobile, lab and XS hardware. Details regarding those frontends
and the modules supported are described in the Online help for the LMS
Test.Lab application.

Section 4.3.1 Making LMS SCADAS Recorder recordings

greater than 4 GB

The solution is using the EXFAT technology from Microsoft – which is an

extension on the FAT system, available on Windows 7 or higher by default..

When downloading recordings over the UTP connection from within the LMS
applications, no action needs to be taken.

Before using the CF card, it must be formatted, selecting EXFAT as file system.

In addition, existing LMS SCADAS Recorder hardware needs a flash update of

the firmware, in order to enable the EXFAT mode of working. This is included
in the tool LMS SCADAS Diagnostics (Start -> All Programs -> LMS Test.Lab
15A -> Tools -> LMS SCADAS Diagnostics).

LMS SCADAS Recorders delivered after the 10B release will have the correct
firmware installed at factory by default.

Section 4.3.2 XS driver installation

The XS frontend, supported in some Test.Lab applications, is connected via a

USB connection. To enable this connection, a driver must be installed.
Normally, this is done automatically when connecting a booted XS frontend to
the PC, but in some cases this might fail. In that case the driver must be
installed manually. The driver can be found on the installation DVD on this
location: <cd-drive>:\Drivers\XS

Section 4.4 LMS Test.Lab Add-ins

After installation of the LMS Test.Lab 15A application, available Add-ins may
be found under the Tools Add-ins menu of the running application itself.

Section 4.4.1 Audio Replay & filter

Sound Device selection for audio replay:

If no RME DIGI96 audio device is installed, the audio card used will be the one
selected as default in Windows.

If a RME DIGI96 audio device is installed on the system, the audio Replay tool
will use it by default. However, this card can only replay sounds that have a
well-defined sample rate. This can give troubles when trying to listen to data
with Audio Replay. It is possible to select another sound device (e.g. the built-in
sound device) to avoid this problem.

Adding an environment variable can do this.

CADA_RTA_OUTPUT_DEVICE.

The value must be a part of the word of the sound device. It can be found on the
Control Panel Sounds and Multimedia Sound Playback, and it is case
sensitive.

So, for example, if the sound card to be used is a "SoundMax Digital Audio"
card, you can specify

CADA_RTA_OUTPUT_DEVICE SoundMax

Section 4.4.2 Remote Control in Rotating Machinery &

Acoustic Testing products

When plugging in, for the first time, the remote control in an USB-port of the
PC, the system will automatically detect this new hardware, and prompt you for
more information.

A dialog will come up asking for the location of the driver that you want to use.
This driver is available in the Drivers/Remocon folder, on the LMS Test.Lab
installation DVD.

Select this folder and continue the installation.

Once the installation procedure is completed, you can activate the Remocon

To install the TL-ENV-REM (LMS Test.Lab 15A Environmental Testing

Remote Control) follow the procedure below:
Step 1
Make sure you have the necessary licenses to use the Remote Control.
If you do not have these, you will not be able to load the Remote Control add-
in.
Step 2
Connect your button box to a USB port on your computer, start a LMS Test.Lab
15A Environmental Testing application and load the remote control add-in (by
selecting Tools Add-ins External key pad) in the application itself.
Once this is done you can use the external keypad to control the Environmental
testing application.
Step 3
Repeat the previous step in all Environmental Testing applications where you
want to use the button box.
It is important to note the following before you install the remote control:
If the External keypad add-in is selected, while no remote control is
connected to your computer, the system will prompt you each time to arm
your frontend, with the message that the keypad was not found.
The keypad supports USB 2.0. We do not guarantee proper functioning of
the remote control with older USB versions
It is possible to connect multiple keypads to one system. This allows the use
of remote controls for different use cases. You should be aware that for
proper functioning of a USB device, the maximum cable length is 5 meter
(distances up to 25 meter can be reached using multiple (maximum 5) serial
connected USB hubs.

Although LMS Test.Lab 15A was developed on Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit, it
is broadly tested and supported on the following operating systems:
 Window 7, Professional, Ultimate & Enterprise , 32-bit version
Window 7, Professional, Ultimate & Enterprise, 64-bit version
 Window 8, Professional & Enterprise, 64-bit version
 Window 8.1, Professional & Enterprise, 64-bit version
The LMS Test.Lab 15A standard installation is compiled in 32-bit mode. There
is however a benefit of using LMS Test.Lab 15A on Microsoft Windows 7 64-
bit: whereas for the classical 32-bit operating system the maximum memory
space for LMS Test.Lab is limited to 2GB, this increases to 4GB when using the
Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit .

Although Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit claims full support of 32-bit

applications, verification has indicated the following restriction for Sound
Diagnosis & Replay (TL-ACT.58.2/3):

the advised one, the 64-bit version brings improvement in those cases of very
high memory demands.
