The highest layer, extremely thin and is where the

atmosphere merges into outer space. It is

EXOSPHERE composed of very widely dispersed particles of
hydrogen and helium.

From about 90 km to 500 and 1,000 km.

Temperatures can get up to 1,500º C. This is where
TERMOSPHERE the space shuttles flew and where the International
Space Station orbits Earth. Auroras occur.

Extends to 85 km high. The top of the mesosphere,

MESOSPHERE called the mesopause, is the coldest part of Earth's
atmosphere: -90 ºC. Meteors burn up in this layer.

Ends about 50 km above ground. Contains the ozone

STRATOSPHERE layer. The air here is very dry and thinner, is where jet
aircraft and weather balloons fly.

Layer closest to Earth's surface, 7 to 20 km thick. Air

TROPOSPHERE is warmer near the ground and gets colder higher up.
Contains clouds. The top is the tropopause.
