A Brief Lesson Plan in English Grade 9 to process the poem


“How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barret Browning using Differentiated Instruction

I. Objectives:
A. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American Literature serve as a
means of enhancing the self through using strategies in summarizing, assessing, and processing information
in texts listened to and viewed; word derivation and formation strategies; distinctions between and among
informative, journalistic and literary writing; and appropriate creative use of word order, punctuation and
capitalization

B. Performance Standard: The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering lines of poetry and
prose in a speech choir, jazz chant or rap with appropriate and creative use of word order, punctuation
marks and interjections and effective use of verbal and non-verbal strategies

C. Learning Competencies:
1. Provide words or expressions appropriate for a given situation (EN9V-Ia-1)
2. Compose forms of literary writing (EN9WC-IIf-9)

IV. Procedure:
A. Engagement:
1. Review of the previous discussion
2. Motivation:
a. What do you think is the best way of showing or expressing your love towards someone?
b. How would you want others to show you how much they love you?
B. Exploration:
1. Students will be familiarized with the selection and its author
a. Reading of the author’s background
b. Reading of the poem by the teacher, by a student and by the class
c. Doing a preview of the selection based on the title using Focusing Inquiry
2. Students will be asked to form 5 groups to give an interpretation of the poem through Differentiated
Instruction
Group 1 Render It: Present a group dramatic reading of the poem.
Group 2 Sketch It: Draw or sketch your interpretation of the message of the poem.
Group 3 Act It Out! Present a pantomime or a tableau of the imageries presented in the
poem.
Group 4. Scribble It! Write a short descriptive paragraph about the traits of the persona
in the poem
Group 5 Share It! Point out the elements that you liked about the poem.
C. Explanation:
Students will answer the following guide questions:
1. What is the poem all about?
2. How does the persona measure his/ her love?
D. Elaboration:
1. The poem is a sonnet. What is a sonnet?
2. What are the two kinds of sonnet?
3. What are the different literary devices employed in the poem?
4. What enduring human values can be gleaned from the theme of the poem?
E. Evaluation:

TASK: Showing appreciation of the poem through a display of Multiple


Intelligences
Task Context: F.L. Vargas College will present a culminating activity to showcase the skills and talents
of its Grade 9 students. As an active student of the school, you are to play an active role by
doing the task assigned.

Task Instructions:

1. Form 5 groups.
2. Choose a rapporteur and a scribe.
3. Brainstorm on the task given to your group.
4. Publish your output after 10 minutes.

Group 1 Intrapersonal: Come up with a slogan as an answer to the title of the poem.
Group 2 Linguistic: Present an acrostic about the important lessons you gained from
the message of the poem using the author’s name ELIZABETH
Group 3 Interpersonal: Simulate a counselling session with teenagers regarding ways of
expressing love towards the opposite gender to avoid early marriage.
Group 4 Existential: Write an ecumenical prayer for every lover in this world.
Group 5 Music: Sing the poem to the tune of any song you want.
