THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE

GRADE 10 RHINESTONE STUDENTS
Chapter 1

Introduction

The world today is using social media. Social media is an internet-based

form of communication. Social media allow users to have conversations, share
information and create web content.

There are many forms of social media including blogs, micro-blogs, wikis,
social networking sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual worlds and more. This new
form of media makes the transfer of text, photos, audio, video and information
in general increasingly fluid among internet users. Social media has relevance
not only for regular internet users but in education as well. It has a lot to offer
just like making our lives easier and comfortable than before.

New generation would prefer the fastest way of communication, finding a

job easily and fastest way of source of information. Social media is very useful to
us especially to the students, they find the information easily through searching,
help their studies to gain more knowledge and to lessen the time in searching
instead of going to the library.

However, social media has a negative effect to us. It can destroy our lives
especially when it is not use properly. There are people who enjoy using social
media in a wrong way such as committing crimes, violence, scam, child
pornography etc. through social media. As we observed even a 3 years old can
know how to open a mobile phone to share videos, photos and games through
share it without assessing their parents.

Another negative effect of social media is for the students. Instead of

using internet in school assignment, research, etc. they used internet just to
play games, watch uncertain videos and visiting unwanted sites and pages.
Many are distracted from their studies because of social media they prefer to
read comments, post pictures, videos online than studying. Students are
attempting to multi-task. They try to check various social media sites while
studying which leads to distraction, getting some low grades and decreases
academic performance. It makes the students more lazy to study, instead of
studying they prefer to get the information that they need over the internet
without the permission of the author which leads to plagiarism or copying the
work of other.

Moreover, social media in terms of business is not good when a person

transact online business, he/she can fool and lie an innocent people for their own
good and interest especially when money is involve. They prefer to fool other
people than to work hard.

Over using of technology tend to have more stomach aches, sleeping
problems as well as anxiety and depression. Lacks of emotional connection,
decreases socializing people, facilitates laziness, reduces family closeness and
causes distractions.

Indeed, it is not a matter of social media, it matters how we use social

media in good or in bad. It is how we value social media as a source of
knowledge and learning. No matter what happen if we put everything to our
creator nothing is impossible. Social media is a useful tools to us, be more
responsible in using it and have this proper etiquette and netiquette to avoid
misunderstanding and hurting each other.

Review of Related Literature

The world today is upgrading and accessing on the internet. All the
information that we need were all there once you have internet connection.
Social media is everywhere once you have gadgets like mobile phones, laptop
and computer, you can access to internet at home, at school or at your work
place.

Nowadays, social networking sites gives users a form of online identity.

The world’s largest social network is Facebook which has more than 1.31 billion
mobile active users and 1.49 billion active users monthly (Facebook 2015).

The use of social media among students has reach high levels and has
affected their study time, poor grammar and wrong spelling when socializing on
social media as well as diverting their attention from their studies (Ndaku,
2013). Students spend much of their study time on social networks than in their
academic undertakings and it has affected their Grade Point Average (GPA).

Those who are addicted users love to go to internet to set back their
personal and professional responsibilities in which the final out comes is poor
academic performance (Nalwa and Anand, 2003). Student academic
performance is affected the more they use social media like Facebook. Social
platforms are mainly use by students for socializing activities rather than
academic purposes (Oye, 2012).

The advance and improve usage of social media platforms such as

Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it
all started has been a hobby for several computer literates individual has
changed to become a social norm and existence-style for students around the

world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole 2007 students and teen agers have
especially recognized this social media platforms to be able to contact their
peers, share information, reinvent their personas and showcase their social lives.

Therefore, social media has a negative association with students academic

performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the
use of social media platforms. People around the globe have been addicted to
the internet which has given rise to more students using social media more often
than before (Karpinski, 2009).
