Introduction
There are many forms of social media including blogs, micro-blogs, wikis,
social networking sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual worlds and more. This new
form of media makes the transfer of text, photos, audio, video and information
in general increasingly fluid among internet users. Social media has relevance
not only for regular internet users but in education as well. It has a lot to offer
just like making our lives easier and comfortable than before.
However, social media has a negative effect to us. It can destroy our lives
especially when it is not use properly. There are people who enjoy using social
media in a wrong way such as committing crimes, violence, scam, child
pornography etc. through social media. As we observed even a 3 years old can
know how to open a mobile phone to share videos, photos and games through
share it without assessing their parents.
The world today is upgrading and accessing on the internet. All the
information that we need were all there once you have internet connection.
Social media is everywhere once you have gadgets like mobile phones, laptop
and computer, you can access to internet at home, at school or at your work
place.
The use of social media among students has reach high levels and has
affected their study time, poor grammar and wrong spelling when socializing on
social media as well as diverting their attention from their studies (Ndaku,
2013). Students spend much of their study time on social networks than in their
academic undertakings and it has affected their Grade Point Average (GPA).
Those who are addicted users love to go to internet to set back their
personal and professional responsibilities in which the final out comes is poor
academic performance (Nalwa and Anand, 2003). Student academic
performance is affected the more they use social media like Facebook. Social
platforms are mainly use by students for socializing activities rather than
academic purposes (Oye, 2012).
