Function
After completion of the welding assembly, the components together with the
steel pipes make up a homogenous unit. By way of the bolted assembly, the
piping is centered and connected, so that it is axially sealed.

Welded assembly
Welding the piping components, welded connections and conical seal with
the cap nut to the corresponding steel pipe ends should be carried out
according to the general rules of DIN 8563 together with DIN 2359.
State of the art welded assembly calls for manual or mechanical inert gas
welding in accordance with the "Wurzel-WIG procedure". This requires a
welder with the qualification of the F III/IV permit.

Welded Assembly
The following working steps are required for achieving the welded assembly:
1 A right angle butt joint at the steel pipe while observing the assembly
dimension and the required axial clearances here.
2 Chamfer the pipe end at an angle of 30' (DIN 2559) and deburr the
inside and outside of the pipe edge.
5 Welding of the root pass under protective and inert gas, then all filler
and final passes of the connection are applied.
Welding joints on precision steel pipes (DIN 2391) or stainless steel pipes
made under these conditions have metallically bright and clean surfaces. As a
result, there is no need to acid clean the piping. Flushing the lines suffices.

Bolt assembly
The high reliability of this pipe joint requires careful bolt assembly. To reach
this goal the following working steps are necessary:
1. First the O-ring is inserted in the cleaned groove of the conical seal.
2. Then the conical seal shall be placed into the 24° cone of the welded
or bolted connection.
3. Now the cap nut is manually stressed, so that it is hand-tight.
4. Finally, the cap nut is stressed with the corresponding torque
moment. (see table on Sheet 10)
Important!
For safety reasons the union shall be held with an open ended wrench to
keep it in position. This also applies for the disassembly of the pipe
union.

Tightening torque
The decisive criterion for the safety quality of a bolted joint is the pre-
stressing force. It is realized by means of the tightening torque in the form of
binding force. A bolted joint should never be fully relaxed, so as to prevent
relative movement. For this reason, high pre-stressing force should always be
chosen.
With a pipe union the pre-stressing force can only be evaluated by way of the
tightening torque, whereby approximately 90% of the torque moment is
transferred to the head and threading friction and only about 10% results in
the pre-stressing force.
For reasons stemming from the design, the joining and positioning behavior
of the 24°-conical seal bolted joint calls for tightening torque-dependent
installation. With the installation dependent on travel of turning, the
assembly components are plastically set or, to a certain extent, cold-
strengthened at the same angle of rotation. This is especially the case with
renewed assembly. For this reason, piping seals over longer periods can only
be guaranteed when the tightening torque moments achieved during bolted
assembly, which are listed in the tables, are observed.

Tightening torque
Bolted joints made out of stainless steel tend to seize the threads as well as
the head faces as a result of their high cohesive properties. To prevent this
tendency the cap nuts of the AVIT conical seal pipe unions are equipped
with an electrolytically applied silver plating.
This prevents the so-called seizing res. cold-welding of the pipe union even
after multiple disassembly and reassembly operation also at temperature
influence of approximately 700°C.
Since the AVIT conical seal bolted joints of standard steel have been
phosphatized and treated with lubricant before delivery, it is not necessary to
additionally treat these bolted joints of standard or stainless steel with more
lubricant. Assemble these with the corresponding tightening torque moments
(MA) contained in the tables.
