America Vs Spanish War

A lot of people are prideful of their nation. They make the most money, they make the
most profit, they have more factories, they won battles. But during the 1898 war (America
versus Spain). Americans became overly prideful. By them becoming over prideful, they caused
themselves to be closer to war with spain. Americans saw an opportunities to make more profit
and money when they saw Cuban revolt against Spain. Americans believed their own lie(s),
their never ending wanting of expanding imperialism, and were too weak to take harsh criticism.

To start, we are all humans and we all believe lies that can seem true from time to time.
But if it is a recurring lie we keep believing, then we are nothing but simply naive. Americans
were very naive during the war of 1898 and possibly before and so on. But those who were
terrible people were not those who believed the lies, but the ones who were the worse were the
reporters who told the lies causing America and Spain to go to war. These liers were known as
the “Yellow Press”. The Yellow Press over exaggerated everything they wrote. And Americans
believed what they wrote. Causing anger and tension against the people of Spain. For example,
the Yellow Press over exaggerated spanish abuses. Making many Americans furious. Overall
the Yellow Press was one of the many reasons why America and Spain ended up going to war.

Cuban leaders in the United States and allies of them raised cries of Cuba “Free Cuba!”
President Mckinley became increasingly concerned about the safety for Americans. Thus
President Mckinley ordered a battleship Maine to Havana harbor in January of 1898. Another
cause as to why America and Spain went to war was because of the lies Americans told
themselves (not because of the Yellow Press). After about two weeks that the battleship was
sitting peacefully, there was a massive explosion. With the result of 354 occupants deaths. But it
was not confirmed that it was Spain's fault. So Americans automatically assumed it was. WIth or
without evidence. Causing the war of 1898 between American and Spain.

A final reason as to what caused America and Spain to go to war was that the
Americans were so prideful (nationalist), that any little thing of criticism (constructive or
destructive) would be considered highly offensive. An example of this would be the De Lome
Letter. The De Lome Letter was a letter written by the Spanish ambassador in Washington
meant to be critical towards president Mckinley. But the letter fell into the hands of the Cuban
rebels in New York. Instead of being critical towards just president Mckinley. It was critical to all
of America. Published under as “Worst insult to the United States in its history.”

Think back to this, what were the causes of the war of 1898 between the Americans and
Spain. Well the after affect of all of the cause (lies believed, and selfishness) was that the
United States became known as a world power, the U.S won the war in less than 4 months, and
although Cuba became independent, America controlled its government.
