“Cultural Exploration” Lesson

Edison Elementary The mission of the Edison Elementary
School Counseling School Counseling Program is to

School Counselors provide counseling programs


in three domains: academic, career and
social/emotional. Their services and programs
help students resolve emotional, social or
behavioral problems and help them develop a
clearer focus or sense of direction. Effective
counseling programs are important to the school
climate and a crucial element in improving
student achievement.
Rationale- Why Edison Elementary School is located in
an ethnically diverse area of San Diego,
teach “Cultural which is City Heights.
Exploration”? ● 58% Latinx
● 16% Asian
● 13% Black or African American
● 11% White
● 2% Two or more races

We believe that exposing our students to the


topic of culture can cultivate the development
of cultural identity and instill appreciation for
cultures that are different than their own.

Next Steps ● Make sure to acquaint ourselves with the corresponding


teacher’s classroom technology before delivering lesson
● Always make extra copies of handout/activities to
ensure all students receive one
● If there is a technical issue in the lesson presentation,
engage students in discussion or activity so that they do
not get bored

Next Steps:

● We will be creating different versions of this lesson in


order to be able to present it to different grade levels and
ensure that they are developmentally appropriate
● Create a more developmentally appropriate pre-post
survey
