Functions Protection functions
Sepam series 10

N B A Earth-fault protection (ANSI 50N-51N)

t Earth-fault protection detects overcurrents caused by phase-to-earth faults. It uses
DE53229

measurements of the fundamental component of the earth-fault current.

2 independent set points (Io> and Io>>)
„„ the low set point (Io>) offers definite time (DT) or IDMT settings with various types
of standardized curves (IEC, IEEE, RI) and it is possible to enable an IDMT timer
hold.
„„ the high set point (Io>>) offers only the definite time (DT) setting. The minimum
setting results in instantaneous operation (ANSI 50).
Depending on the required level of sensitivity, there are three types of Sepam relays.
Sensitivity Sensor Setting range
Io> Io>> Io Standard 3 phase CTs or 1 earth-fault protection CT, 0.1...24 Ino
with rated primary current Ino
Sensitive (1) 3 phase CTs or 1 earth-fault protection CT, with rated 0.01...2.4 Ino
primary current Ino
High Special core balance CSH or GO, with ratio of 470/1 0.2...240 A primary,
sensitivity i.e. 0.0004...0.5 Ino
(1) Setting not available with Sepam series 10N.

N B A Phase-overcurrent protection (ANSI 50-51)

Phase-overcurrent protection detects overcurrents caused by phase-to-phase faults.
It uses the measurements of the fundamental component of currents drawn from two
or three phase CTs, with a secondary rating of 1 A or 5 A.
3 independent set points (I>, I>> and I>>>)
„„ 2 low set points (I> and I>>) offer definite time (DT) or IDMT settings with various
types of standardized curves (IEC, IEEE, RI) and it is possible to enable an IDMT
timer hold.
„„ the high set point (I>>>) offers only the definite time (DT) setting.
The minimum setting results in instantaneous operation (ANSI 50).

t
DE53228

N B A Thermal image overload protection (ANSI 49 RMS)

This protection function is used to protect cables and HV/LV transformers against
overloads, based on measurement of the current drawn.
The function is based on a thermal model which calculates the temperature rise from
current measurements. The current measured is an RMS 3-phase current which
takes into account harmonics up to number 13.
Two protection settings
„„ the continuous maximum permissible current setting which corresponds to the
maximum thermal withstand of the protected devices (the continuous permissible
current corresponds to a temperature rise of 100 %).
„„ the setting for the equipment heating and cooling time constant.

9
Functions Protection and measurement
Sepam series 10 functions

N B A Phase-overcurrent and earth-fault protection cold

load pick-up
The desensitization function avoids nuisance tripping during energizing operations,
particularly following a long outage. It temporarily raises the protection set point.
High currents during energization may be due to:
„„ simultaneous energizing of all loads in an installation (air conditioning, heating,
etc.)
„„ magnetizing currents in power transformers (these currents can saturate the
phase-current sensors and create a false residual current on the secondary of the
sensors)
„„ motor starting currents.
Protection function Mode of action
Phase-overcurrent After circuit-breaker closing, the tripping set points (I> or I>>) are
protection increased or disabled for the set time.
Earth-fault protection After circuit-breaker closing, the tripping set points (Io> or Io>>) are
increased or disabled for the set time.
Or
This protection is restrained by sensor saturation detection (H2
measurement) (1)
(1) Setting not available with Sepam series 10 N.

N B A Logic discrimination (ANSI 68)

This function provides:
T = 100 ms „„ perfect tripping discrimination with phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth short-
DE53468

circuits, on all types of network

„„ faster tripping of the breakers closest to the source.
All Sepam series 10 relays (N, B and A) can send a blocking signal when a fault
is detected by the phase-overcurrent and earth-fault protection functions.
T > 100 ms
Only the Sepam series 10 A relays can receive blocking signals which inhibit
Logic discrimination ensures tripping within 100 ms for a protection tripping. A saving mechanism (exclusive Sepam function) ensures back-up
fault affecting the substation busbars, while maintaining protection in the event of a blocking link failure.
discrimination with the feeders.

N B A External tripping
A Sepam series 10 A can receive, via a logic input, a tripping order from an external
protection device.

N B A Earth-fault current
This function displays the value of the fundamental of the earth-fault current.
For this measurement and for earth-fault protection (ANSI 50N/51N), the zero-
sequence input must be connected either to the common point of the three phase
CTs or to one earth-fault protection CT or to a CSH120, CSH200 or GO110 core
balance CT.

N B A Phase currents
This function displays the rms phase-current values and takes into account
harmonics up to order 13. On Sepam series 10•4••, this function displays the three
phase currents. On Sepam series 10•3••, only the A and C phases are connected
and displayed.

N B A Peak demand currents

This function displays the greatest average current on each of the three phases and
indicates the current absorbed by peak loads.

PS100 backup power supply for MV/LV

PM100592

substations
Applications
The power supply unit supplies backup operating power for:
„„ MV switchgear motor mechanisms and circuit breaker coils
„„ Transmission equipment (e.g. radio)
„„ Control units such as RTU or Automatic Transfer System
„„ Protection relays, Fault Passage Indicators and others electronic devices
High availability power supply
A battery ensures uninterrupted operation of the whole substation in the event of
loss of the main supply. The backup power supply unit:
„„ Includes a regulated and temperature-compensated charger
„„ Stops the battery before deep discharge
„„ Carries out a battery check every 12 hours
Backup solution for MV switchgear power needs in „„ Measures battery ageing
the event of micro outages and power interruptions. „„ Forwards monitoring information via a Modbus communication port and output
„„ Easy maintenance with only one battery relays
„„ Battery remote monitoring
„„ High level of insulation to protect the electronic PS100 benefits
devices in harsh MV environments Only one battery
„„ Compliant with standards IEC 60 255-5 (10kV level) Traditional backup power supplies require a set of 2 or 4 batteries to produce 24V
or 48V, with complicated replacement and adjustment of the battery pack. The
PS100 needs only one battery, simplifying replacement. The battery is a standard
sealed lead-acid 12V battery with a 10-year service. It can be purchased easily,
anywhere in the world.
Improved availability of MV/LV substations
The PS100 is designed to ride through power network interruptions of up to 48
hours. It is associated with a battery selected to meet the required backup time.

+
For example, a 38Ah battery provides 12 hours of backup power supply to a SM6
switchboard including 4 Sepam units.
The PS100 protects and optimises the battery with state-of-the-art monitoring.
Battery PS100 A Modbus communication port forwards monitoring data to allow optimised
maintenance operations. Perfect integration with the Easergy range to control and
monitor your distribution network.
The PS100 stops supplying power and reserves an “additional Energy backup” to
PM102301

restart the installation after an extended power interruption.

The “additional Energy backup” can be enabled with a local push button to provide
energy for restarting the protection relays and operating the MV switchgear.
Withstands severe substation environments
The PS100 includes 10 kV insulation, electronic protection against overvoltage and
overloads, and automatic restart after a fault.
