DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES -I CE: 303

Time: 3Hrs
M Marks: 60

Note: i) Any missing data can be suitably assumed clearly stating the same.
ii) Support your answers with labeled sketches wherever possible.
iii) Use of IS: 800 and Handbook on Structural Steel is allowed.
iv) Section A is compulsory, attempt any 4 questions from section B and
attempt any 2 questions from section C.
v) Steel of grade 410 and bolts of grade 4.6 may be used if not specified
otherwise.
vi) Assume threads of bolts fall in the plane of shear if not specified otherwise
vii) Marks are shown against each question.

SECTION A

SECTION B

1 What are the merits of Limit state design philosophy over other philosophies
2 Two flats (Fe 410 Grade steel each 210mmX8mm are to be jointed using 20 mm
diameter 4.6 grade bolt to form a lap joint. The joint is supposed to transfer a
factored load of 250KN.Design the joint and determine the suitable pitch of the
bolts.

3 A 300 ISF 8mm of grade Fe410 is used as a tension member in a lattice girder. It
is connected to a 12mm thick gusset plate by 18mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6.
Calculate the effective net area of the member, if
(a) Chain bolting is done as shown in figure.

4. In a truss a strt 3.2m long consists of two angles ISA 100100,8mm. Find the
factored strength of the members if the angles are connected on both sides of
12mm gusset by one bolt
5. A simply supported steel beam carries a superimposed load of 20 kN/metre
run on an effective span of 4.0 m. Design the beam.

SECTION C

1 .A single unequal angle ISA 9060 ,6mm is connected to a 10mm gusset plates at the
ends with 5 nos. of 16mm bolts to transfer tension.Determine the design tensile strength
of the angle.
(a) if the gusset is connected to 90mm leg.
(b) if the gusset is connected to 60mm leg.

g=50mm, if 90mm leg is connected

= 30mm , if 60mm leg is connected

(10)

2 A column ISHB 350@ 674 N/m carries an axial load of 1200KN. Design suitable
gusset base using M20 Conc mix. .(Example 5.2 Pg 223 Duggal)

3 Determine the design loads (DL, LL and WL) on the purlins and panel
points of a Fink truss of an industrial building located in Chandigarh

(i) Class of building : General with life of 50 yrs

(ii) Maxm dimension = 45 metres
(iii) Width of building = 15 metres
(iv) Ht at eaves level = 9 metres
(v) Topography: plain
(vi) Permeability: Medium
(vii) Span of truss: = 15 metres
(viii) Pitch=1:5
(ix) Spacing of purlins:1.35 metres
(x) Spacing of trusses =4.5 metres
Design the purlins also
