EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Society should be providing equal opportunities to all categories of people with disabilities.
Consistent with the philosophy, it should be working for providing education, employment
opportunities, equal rights and quality life for them. Gainful employment plays an essential
part in the life of a person because it gives him status and binds him to the society. Acceptance
of disabled persons at work can be viewed as society's acceptance of these Persons without
discrimination. However, many people with disabilities are still unable to obtain gainful
occupation and are dependent on others. The main focus of the report is to know in detail about
DEEPASHRAM, understand the problems and challenges faced by them.
INTRODUCTION

HISTORY

3 July 1994 - On the solemnity of St. Thomas, Apostle and first Missionary of India, the
Missionaries of Charity Contemplative opened their third mission house in India, Gurgaon,
Haryana, in the Archdiocese of Delhi, which was temporarily given by the Patrician Brothers
for free of use.

18 November 1995 – Blessing and inauguration of the first building of “Deep ashram” built
on the piece of land acquired on 8 December 1994: his Excellency Rt. Rev. Vincent Concessao,
the then auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Delhi, in the presence of Bl. Mother Teresa of
Kolkata blessed the house. Bl. Teresa thanked God and the people of Gurgaon for welcoming

the Brothers.

On 22nd November 1998 – Blessing of our Holy Family Chapel by Bishop Vincent
Concessao.

On 18th November 1999 – Blessing of the entire “Deepashram” premises by his Excellency
Rt. Rev. Alan De Lastic (R.I.P.), the then Archbishop of Delhi.
OVERVIEW OF DEEPASHRAM

KNOWING DEEPASHRAM

Deepashram”, which means “House of Light”, is a home for about 50 mentally and
physically disabled, orphaned and homeless boys and men, who are really the poorest of the
poor. Deepashram was established by Mother Teresa in 1995 with currently having three
more branches in India. At present, it is run by Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of
Calcutta.

According to our Constitutions, the communities are meant to be schools of prayer, adoration
and whole-hearted free assistance and service to the poorest of the poor. Right from the
beginning the Brothers have tried to keep the spirit and the aim of the Society. The center
works to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society, children with mild mental retardation through
education and training. However, many of the boys lack the percentage of mobility that allows
autonomy; thus, they require constant care from Deepashram staff and volunteers.

The Centre, with God’s help, meets the legitimate needs of the less fortunate disabled boys
and men with tender love and care, proper food and clothing.

The Brothers devote themselves to the material needs and spiritual assistance of retarded and
mentally or physically disabled boys, orphan and abandoned, from 10 to 40 years of age. The
boys are assisted, as far as possible, by physiotherapists, special educators, speech therapists,
some paid workers and above all by the loving care of the Brothers who help them to mature
and become real children of God. The various therapy programmes help the disabled men to
become more and more self-sufficient.

The name chosen for the project was “Deepashram”, an oasis of light, and it has indeed become
so, not only for Catholics but also for Hindus and for all men irrespective of caste or religion.

Besides, each boy is adopted from afar through the Distant Adoption Programme.
What is meant by distant adoption?

Since the disabled men are all orphans and homeless, they want them to have a rather
comfortable home, with many adoptive parents, brothers and sisters, as well as friends. In a
word, any person of good will and generosity can be part of the programme. As we know, none
of us can grow in isolation, and none of us is meant to be alone in this world. We all have to
have a home to live in and people to live with. More so for the homeless and orphaned
handicapped who are really the poorest of the poor in every sense of the word.

A new blessed person, i.e. Jesus in the form of the handicapped, enters into the life of the one
who adopts, and who in some mysterious way begins to experience a deeper bond with the
whole family of the Missionaries of Charity.

PERSONNEL

At present, 45 disabled and mentally challenged children between 11-40 years of age are living
in Deepashram. When it comes to staff, they are 17 in number which reside there, and 8 are
temporary staff and are paid minimum salary of rupees15000 as per their work in orphanage,
others are there to just take care of them. This orphanage is under Father Sebastian.
AIM
Our aim is to satiate the infinite thirst of Jesus, on the Cross and in he Eucharist, for love and
for souls, by the profession of the evangelical counsels and the fourth vow of whole-hearted
free service to the poorest of the poor, lived and exercised daily through Eucharistic adoration,
prayer, penance and works of mercy.
Our Brothers are sent for various trainings to meet the needs of the Society and our service to
the Poorest of the Poor. All Brothers may be sent for studies of philosophy and theology. The
decision of the various forms of studies and training rests on the Father General and his
Council.
We are an Institute of Brothers of whom some can be priests as well. It is important that each
Brother should entrust his state of life entirely to the hands of God and be happy always to
remain in the lowest place, as well as humbly to accept any appointments given to him. The
criterion for us is not what form of training one is sent for but how one remains docile to the
Society and his love for it. Whatever our status with respect to clerical ordination, we will
remain Brothers, and call one another ‘Brother’, with the sole exception of the Father General.
The Society will entirely depend on Divine Providence for all its needs, spiritual and temporal.
ACTIVITIES AT DEEPASHRAM

For 45 boys, vocational and artistic training is provided for peace of mind and to earn living
as well. Certain students are also taken to participate in art competition to enhance their
competence. Regular picnics is also scheduled to reduce the boredom of the society. Even in
festivals, decoration in terms of inhouse activity is performed.

OPERATIONS

Deepashram rely on donations given by different companies, different individual persons and
the fund from the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta for operations, salaries
and other overhead costs.

FACILITIES

Every individual is provided with following facilities.

• Food: Breakfast, Milk, Lunch & Dinner.

• Residential Facilities: Bed, Lockers, daily consumables, etc

DONATIONS

Materials are taken in the form of donations. They are accepted only in the form of dry ration
and not in ready to eat form. This is very good as it takes care of quality of food and eliminates
risks involved in taking cooked/ ready to eat food as a donation.
OUR EXPERIENCE

We as a group also visited deep ashram and donated few useful things and also spent some
memorable time with them and came to know much more about them
SWOT ANALYSIS

1. Special focus on mentally and physically disabled, orphaned and homeless boys and men.

2. Rehabilitate and reintegrate into society through serving people.

3. Passionate volunteer and donor base of organization.

4. Clear vision and long history associated with the mission of the organization

WEAKNESSES

1. Lack of communication externally

. 2. Less availability of staff.

3. More activities for the growth of education and training should be provided.

4. Poor record-keeping.

OPPORTUNITIES

1. Develop partnerships with other local non-profits.

2. Special types of events that promote the mission of the orphanage.

3. More support from donor agencies and other sector organizations

4. Good community response.

5. Favourable distribution of resources

THREATS

1. Sustainability problems due to lack of funding.

2. Lack of attitudinal problems at the community level.

CONCLUSION

They are making a difference in the society by serving the mentally and physically disabled,
orphaned and homeless boys and men for the sake of service, without consideration for the
results thereof and it naturally leads towards stability, happiness and enlightenment. This
experience boosted our confidence level and helped us to discover new facets of my
personality. It never felt like a responsibility or an obligation for them. Deepashram asks its
volunteers to share their most precious gifts - 'their time & themselves'.

SUGGESTIONS

1. They should organize some more activities to enhance the abilities of the mentally and
physically disabled students.

2. They do not carry out much of the promotional activities so they should do some promotions
to get more donations and funding.
