INTRODUCTION

Surge Comparison testing is by now a well accepted, test method for testing
motors, Generators, Transformer & coils. This method have several advantages
over ground wall high pot & Insulation resistance testing. In particular incipient
fault in ground wall & inter-turn shorts are detected by this method.

A charged capacitor is discharged through the coil under test resulting in a

oscillatory waveform because of LC tank circuit. Every coil will have a typical
signature waveform. The two waveform of one Master & other unknown coil is
compared. The capacitor is repeatedly charged & discharged at a certain
frequency to capture the waveform on oscilloscope. The Thyrotron is typically
used for switching & a oscilloscope is required. The coil is subjected to the surge
stresses till the waveform is compared & results are interpreted.

SIVA R & D has come out with a New Digital Surge ComparisonTester which is
micro-controller based & uses completely solid state surge switching (thyristor
based). The waveform is captured in a single application of surge voltage, using
a ultra fast & accurate data acquisition system. The waveform is displayed on a
LCD Screen. All Test parameters are also displayed.

The Digital surge comparison tester Model has been designed using latest state
of art technology in data acquisition, micro-controller and solid state high voltage
switching. The main design criteria have been ruggedness & ease of
operation.

Read the manual carefully & proceed to use the equipment with confidence.

SALIENT FEATURES.

NOTES ON SELECTING PARAMETERS

1. SURGE VOLTAGE : Selection of test voltage for a given object is a matter of

choice which is governed by industry practices & design criteria. Generally
recommended surge voltage to test motors, generators & transformers in service
is to apply twice the line voltage + 100 volts. These test voltages are consistent
with NEMA MG-1, ANSI/SEGO 95-1997 & JEEE43-1974 Standards.

Examples
I. 460 Volt Motors
2 x 460 + 1000 = 1920 Volts

II. 4160 volts Motors

2 x 4160 + 1000 = 9320 V

For new windings even this voltage is some time increased by a factor of
1.2 to 1.7.

SIVANANDA ELECTRONICS

For testing inciplent inter-turn short, in coils the test voltage is selected by
multiplying the no. of turns by the desired interturn stress voltage.

RATE : The selection of Rate will depend upon the inductance & Q. of the object
to be tested & internal energy storage capacitor (.025 uF). The basic oscillation
frequency is ½ & damping will depend upon the Q of coil & total resistive
component in series. By knowing the inductance of coil we can calculate the
frequency & then keep the rate 5 –10 times so that the complete ringing is
accommodated in full screen.

If the inductance is not known then start at form the highest rate & slowly
decrease till you have the completed ringing in full screen.

If the inductor is too high or too low (indicated by part of the ringing on full
screen or full ringing in part of screen after), then this model of tester may not
be suitable for testing such coils. In that case contact M/s. SIVANANDA
ELECTRONICS for further suggestion regarding suitable model.

OPERATING PROCEDURE & INTERPRETATION OF WAVEFORMS

12
S

SIVANANDA ELECTRONICS
1. Connect the instrument to main 230V AC, 50Hz single phase. The supply
should be stabilized. It is recommended to use servo- stabilised or CVT.
The three pin mains power plug should also have proper earth.

2. Also provide the earth on earth terminal this is a must for the safety of
operator & instrument.

3. Connect R,Y,B,N,G terminals to respective coils.

4. Select Band Switch for particular position.

5. Select & set the test voltage, & approximate rate.

6. Press to START & set the voltage. Then the surge will be acquired &
displayed on screen together with Ref. waveform.

7. The typical waveform are shown in following figure:
