1
Background

Standard Model
- Particle Physics investigates the nature of
fundamental particles
- Particles excitations of respective fields
- Higgs Boson gives fundamental particles mass
- Exact Higgs mechanisms still unclear

Experimental Particle Physics

- Experiments done by colliding particles at extremely high energies

- Fundamental particles will spray off and are caught by energy detector
- Want exact branching ratios of the Higgs
- Shows how it couples with particles that it decays into

2
Reasons for the
International Linear Collider (ILC)
ILC uses e-, e+ collisions
- Cleanliness of collision products
- Finer energy detector
- More controllable, and better defined initial states
(polarization, energy, position of collision…)
- High rate of Higgs event from e+, e- —> Z, h
- Higgs factory in search of new physics beyond the
standard model

Muon Detector
Silicon Detector for the ILC
HCal - General purpose Silicon Detector (SiD)
- Consists of: Silicon Tracker (SiTracker),
EMCal
Tracker
e+ Beamline e- Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECal), Hadronic
Calorimeter (HCal), and Muon Detector
- Particle Flow Algorithm (PFA) reconstructs
particles

3
My Goal
Discovering physically how well we can reconstruct Taus from Higgs decay

- Simulation for full SiD

- 10000 events at 250 GeV e+e- to Z, Higgs.
- Z decay to e+e- always and Higgs based off standard model
- Reconstruct Taus coming from decay chain shown below

Final State

- Detector sees the π+/- and the two γ’s

- These are in a small cluster on the detector
- When can the detector separate the two gammas to identify
this decay chain, and when they are merged?

Z Reconstruction

- Z reconstruction using e+, e- pairs

- Make a mass cut around the true Z

good events

Looking at the Rho

- Tau Neutrinos are invisible to detector

- True rho energy vs. reconstructed rho

Summary
ILC hopes to pin down the Higgs Mechanism.

SiD is important to this in making precise measurements.

Higgs->Tau,Tau is a common decay mode.

Hopes to improve Tau reconstruction with making detector finer.
