Time Motivation and Introduction:

12:20pm Warm Up/Revisiting prior knowledge (10 minutes)


 Begin the PATHS lesson with a quiet meditation. If the weather is Smiling Minds link
sunny and clear, conduct this meditation outside and set a three-
minute timer for students to sit on the grass and listen to all the
sounds they can hear. If it is raining, complete a Smiling Minds
meditation.
 Review prior knowledge by using the Feelings Poster to remind
students of all the different emotions we can experience on a daily
basis. Ask students the following key questions:
1. Are all emotions okay to feel?
2. How can we deal with uncomfortable emotions?
3. Are all our behaviours and reactions to feelings okay?
 Lead this discussion into the new topic of friendship. Feelings Poster

“Sometimes we feel uncomfortable feelings within our friendships,


and it is important that we deal with these healthily and do not let
them affect our relationships.”

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):


12:30pm
Story Time (10 minutes)
 Tell students that today we are going to begin to read a story about
friendship. Before we begin, have all students stand up to get them
moving around before the story. If they agree with a statement, they
stay standing, if not they can bob down.

1. My friends make me happy.


2. I have a best friend.
3. I am a friendly person.
4. I treat my friends with respect.

 Tell students to have a think about these different questions when


they listen to the story.
PowerPoint with the
story typed up
 Using the PowerPoint created, read students (with pictures) the story
of Carla and Ann about friendship.

 If students are noticeably zoning out throughout the story, have some
volunteers come up the front to act out the story as it is told.
12:40pm
Role Play (20 minutes)
 Put students into suitable groups and instruct them to create a short
role play EITHER displaying good friendship or bad friendship. They
can use the prompt card or come up with their own idea. Ideas may

include

Good:
- Sharing
- Being kind
- Doing nice things for another

Bad:
- Putting someone down
- Being jealous
- Upsetting someone on purpose Role play prompt cards

 There should be no stress related to this activity and use any tension
in groups as a learning opportunity to show how important it is to be
kind and to cooperate with others in friendship.

 Students can take this in their own direction however will be given a
scenario prompt card with an idea showing either good or bad
friendship.

1pm Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

Sharing (10 minutes)


 Have an A3 sheet of paper ready at each group of desks. Students
will be put into groups and will be given 2 minutes to write as many 4 x A3 posters with titles
ideas as they can think of on each poster. After the 2 minutes is up, in the centre
they will rotate and add more ideas to the poster. The titles on each
poster will be:
1. What is friendship?
2. What should you do if you disagree with a friend?
3. What makes a good friend?
4. What does NOT make a good friend?
1:10pm
 If time allows, stick “Jack” on the board and tell students that Jack
tries to be a good friend. Ask students to share what they wrote on Journals
the posters and write them around Jack to display the kind of
behaviours they should show in friendships.

Journal Time (5 minutes)


1:15pm
 Allow 5 minutes at the end of the lesson for students to write in their
“Feelings journals”. Play soft meditation music in the background to
encourage students to use the given time to experience their
emotions and get them off their chest if necessary.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

 Students will need to tidy their space, put away their journals and other
work, ready to go out for recess.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
 Use the big posters to assess students’ opinions, views and feelings
about friendship.
