1 Introduction

There are plenty of different situations to use L3 Data Collector (MegaMon) for the message
collection.

This document describes recommended different message filters in more detail. Message filters
should be used as described here due to fact that with these, functioning and message
collection correctness has been verified.

2 Impact on RNC computer units’ load

Message monitoring collection from the network element obviously requires some CPU time
from the computer unit concerned. The required CPU time depends directly on the message
filter and the traffic volume/profile.

In mcRNC the message monitoring overhead is higher because in CPU cores running Linux in
USPU located mostly call specific SW families. While in IPA-RNC, in ICSU unit located both call
specific (monitored with Standard message filter) and cell specific SW (not monitored with
Standard message filter), causing that the increase in CPU consumption for call specific SW
results has smaller impact on the overall ICSU unit load. Cell specific SW in mcRNC is located in
CSPU unit, which is not monitored and not impacted at all in case of Standard message filter.
Starting from mcRNC4.1 release RAN2251 "Automatic mcRNC Resource Optimization" feature
provides mechanism allocating more CPU cores to call specific SW, if CPU cores allocated to user
plane SW are underutilized, which allows to decrease CPU load of USPU units also in case when
high CPU load is caused by MegaMon message monitoring.

MegaMon solution has an overload protection mechanism, in all IPA-RNC releases and in mcRNC
releases starting from mcRNC4.1. This mechanism aims to avoid any disturbance due to
MegaMon to the traffic handling by RNC under high load, and it works as following. MegaMon
counterpart process in RNC monitors continuously the load inside the monitored computer unit.
If the load is above the predefined overload thresholds, then the overload protection activates
and the message monitoring is paused. Information about the overload protection activation is
sent to MegaMon. After the computer unit load is decreased below the overload thresholds the

Confidential
message monitoring is started again and the number of the lost messages during the pause is
informed to MegaMon.

IPA-RNC and mcRNC computer load effects when using Default Filter conditions are shown in
document Technical Support Solutions (TSS) Release Note.

3 Default filter conditions

Default message filters are not modifiable by the user unless the special license allowing
modification exists. Default message filters are fully customized message filters for different
TSS tools and solutions.

3.1 (3G) WCDMA RNC, Standard

Name of the readymade message filter to take standard Telecom message monitoring is RNC.
The RNC message filter is suitable for MR_Analyzer_3G, RAN2930 and basic trouble shooting.
This is “normal” message filter for Telecom message monitoring. With this filter in most cases
necessary information is collected for the further troubleshooting.

Message filter RNC_Telecom is:

3.2 (3G) WCDMA RNC, ADVANCED Telecom troubleshooting

RNC_Telecom_Advanced message filter can be used with GEO, ImsiCatcher, MR_Analyzer_3G and

3.3 (3G)RNC Collector for NetAct

RNCCollector message filter is tailored to be used with RncCollector for NetAct. RNC Collector
for NetAct is a solution where collected messages are processed by special made application for
the purpose.

With this application, it is especially important to have exactly this message filter used since
there are other applications that depend on the collected message details.

Message filter RNCCollector is:

3.7 (2G) GSM BSC, Basic Telecom troubleshooting

This is “normal” message filter for Telecom message monitoring for BSC. With this filter in most
cases (excluding handovers) necessary information is collected for the further troubleshooting.

This message filter is creating reasonable stream towards L3 Data Collector (MegaMon) server. It
also has some effect on the BSC computer units when collecting the messages. Computer unit
load in BSC is directly proportional to the traffic volume in the BSC. Higher the traffic load is in
BSC, higher is the additional load that message collection is causing.

In the NSN performance test environment, BCSU computer load increase has been seen to
increase up to around 6% with nominal traffic profile described in product documentation.
Message stream towards L3 Data collector in average has been roughly 8Mbit/s/BCSU unit.

Message filter BSC_BCSU (used in BCSUs for all BSC SW releases) is:

3.8 (2G) GSM BSC, Extensive Telecom troubleshooting

This is “extensive” message filter for Telecom message monitoring for BCSUs in BSC. With this
filter also handover related information is collected for the further troubleshooting. For MCMUs
the basic filter can still be used.

This message filter is creating reasonably large message stream towards L3 Data Collector
(MegaMon) server. It also has some effect on the BSC computer units when collecting the
messages. Computer unit load in BSC is directly proportional to the traffic volume in the BSC.
Higher the traffic load is in BSC, higher is the additional load that message collection is causing.

In the NSN performance testing environment, BCSU computer load increase has been seen to
increase up to around 9% with nominal traffic profile described in product documentation..
Message stream towards L3 Data collector in average has been roughly 24Mbit/s/BCSU unit.

Message filter BSC_EXTENSIVE_BCSU (used for advanced troubleshooting in BCSUs for all BSC
SW releases) is:
SR:((OFAM=01BF,014E,01B3,01C0)AND(NOT(NUM=1,2,9710,9711)))

Breakdown and details of the message filter is described below:
