Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):

Children with moderate ASD may have

verbal skills, but not at age level. Though
they can use words to communicate their
needs, wants, etc., it is difficult for them
to become accustomed to. They may or may
not have significant sensory challenges
such as sound, lights, or touch. However,
they may have some areas of real academic
strength. Children with ASD tend to have
breakdowns when they’re overwhelmed
or frustrated.

Problem Statement:
A space with unity and universal design, incorporating
the needs and uses of each individual is needed for the
Campbell Residence. The functionality will be practical
and minimalistic to provide accessibility and inclusivity.

Case Study #1: Sandringham Way

Located: West Midlands

Beds: 2
Address: Sandringham Way,
Withymor
The sensory environment is vital
and needs to be autism-friendly.
How the home feels, looks,
sounds, smells and functions will
influence a person’s day to day
quality of life.

At Fairmont they
know how to
control acoustics
such as noise, echo
and reverberation
which helps the
person with autism.
Escape space for any
overstimulation in the
shared environment is
also vital.

Every person with autism

will experience the
characteristics of the
disorder with varying
degrees of difficulty. This
space is an example of a
room that a child with
autism will experience
overstimulation. The
various moving lights make
the room unsuitable.

A safe garden space and

their service users have
their own ‘den area’ or
sensory room providing
alternative, personal,
quiet space other than
their bedroom.

as well as, views of
the golf course and

local playing fields,
shops and public
house are a few
minutes walk from the
Apple Tree House.

They arrange
a variety of
activities on a

the needs and
tastes of each
