Position Title: Director of Music and Lituray
Status: Full-time, Exempt
(40 hours per week, including weekends, evening rehearsals and meetings)
Department: Worship
Reports to: Pastor
‘The Director of Music and Liturgy is responsible for enriching the worship life of the parish
community. This employee is a professional with advanced training in music and/or liturgy, has
a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and is a leader who possesses the skills and
talents to enhance worship through the varied expressions of liturgical music. The Director of
Music and Liturgy will creatively and energetically encourage the assembly to live the gospel
message, as well as the parish theme of "One Family in Christ,” by enabling and coordinating
liturgical music for the worshiping assembly, vocal ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists,
accompanists and others in music ministry.
Primary Function of this Position
‘As a member of the pastoral staff, the Director of Music and Liturgy plans, coordinates, and
implements strategies to enhance all liturgical celebrations. S/he is responsible for overseeing
the coordination of all liturgical ministers and all aspects of parish music. S/he is the principal
musician for all parish liturgies as well as weddings and funerals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Coordinate and/or provide music and musicians for all weekend liturgies, other major
celebrations, weddings, funerals, etc.
‘+ Oversee the planning and implementation of all areas of prayer & worship
‘Work with the Worship Committee
Serve as parish contact person/consultant regarding any liturgical matters—including the
planning for any sacramental liturgies
+ Assure availabilty of resources and supplies required for meaningful and liturgically
correct worship
+ Provide liturgical formation, music education, direction and practical preparation for
cantors/leaders of song, and all choral and instrumental groups
* Provide a visible, accessible presence at parish events and demonstrates an interest
and concem for parishioners
‘+ Establish, demonstrate and promote effective working relationships among all parish
musicians, liturgical ministers and presiders
‘+ Demonstrate good public relations both within and beyond the parish and is involved in
Archdiocesan networks and professional peer groups
‘* Prepare and manage budget for parish liturgy and music program
Work with administrators, teachers, volunteers and students associated with both the
School and Child and Youth Ministry Programs to develop meaningful and appropriate
liturgical celebrations
+ Maintain and upgrade musical repertoire of parish community, music library and all
copyrights as needed* Maintain own expertise and currency in the developments in liturgy and music
* Work cooperatively with staff in the area of evangelization
* Perform above duties, plus others which may be assigned by the Pastor
Performance Standards
Play for three parish Masses per weekend
Coordinate music for various musicians; update them on liturgical matters
Direct or oversee all Choirs
Incorporate parishioners’ instrumental and vocal talents into liturgies
Recruit members for all areas of parish music and liturgical ministries
Meet with couples to discuss and plan wedding music
Maintain parish instruments
Foster congregational singing
Supervise and assist volunteer coordinators of liturgical ministries (e.g. Eucharistic
Ministers, Servers, Lectors, Ushers, Sacristans, etc.) in training and implementation of
these ministries
‘* Establish and train liturgy planning teams as necessary; provides supervision and serves
as a resource
‘+ Provide Orders of Worship when needed
Sustain and supervise liturgical environment
Collaborate with Pastoral staff and Worship Committee
Qualifications
‘+ Bachelor's Degree in music or liturgy or related field is required
«Master's degree in related field is preferred
* 3-5 years related work experience is preferred
‘* Mastery of the organ and piano is required
+ Ability to manage and direct a variety of choirs
* Strong knowledge base and interest in utilizing a broad liturgical music spectrum
‘* Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment with focus on
building the level of parishioner involvement and talent sharing
* Ability to work with other professional musicians on guitar, strings, homs, etc.
* Ability to sing and lead song
* Sense of pastoral ministry
+ Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate well with staff and
parishioners
‘+ Knowledge of computer programs needed in this field
* Demonstrated organizational and administration skills as related to time/resource
management, scheduling, budgeting, etc.
‘+ Roman Catholic in good standing
Essential Job Functions
Position requires ability to stand, walk and sit for extended periods of time. Also requires use of
hands and feet to play musical instruments and lifting up to 10 pounds. Must be able to speak
and hear. Must be able to tolerate loud noises.
