Rahul Gandhi was trailing in his family
constituency from generations, Amethi in
Uttar Pradesh by over 15,000 votes from
his BJP rival Smriti Irani till we wrote
these lines. In the same constituency
Rahul Gandhi won his previous elections
by over 5,00,000 votes.
While the BJP and NDA did almost a clean
sweep in the northern state of Rajasthan,
Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar
Pradesh and Himanchal Pradesh but also
made a big dent in Mamata Banerjee’s
fort in West Bengal and in Orissa. The
opposition combined is completely
devastated at the defeat and looking for
avenues to pass on the blame. All the
dirty tricks they tried failed miserably.
This election will be remembered for
long time to come in India’s history as
the entire opposition combined fought
against only one person and that was
Narendra Modi. There were no major
election issues which usually come up
during election time and gives opposition
parties some leverage against the ruling
party but not during this election. The
opposition combined tried their best to
create fake narratives and false allegations
which did not go down well with the
voters and chose again to the man, they
saw working hard tirelessly, day and
night since last five years. The Bombay
Stock Exchange jumped to a historic
40,000-mark first time in its history after
the initial rends started showing BJP/
NDA leading. There is an atmosphere
of jubilation and celebration all over

will receive their first ever automatic tax
assessment over the next two months
with the first batch going out today.

of July, Inland Revenue will be letting

Thompson says refunds will be going out
in batches rather than all at the same

“This is our first year issuing automatic
assessments and we want to make sure
everything goes smoothly. That’s why
we’re taking a little extra time this year
and we will review whether we can speed
up the process for 2020.
“We’ll be contacting customers to let
them know about their assessments by
email or through a letter in the post.
“The main thing to remember is that if
you have any doubt about whether that

set up an instalment arrangement.
Ms Thompson says automatic tax
assessments are part of Inland Revenue’s
efforts to make tax straight forward.
“We expect the amount paid out annually
in refunds and the number of bills to pay
will decline over the coming years as we
now have a system that can recognise
when someone is over- or under-paying
tax and can help customers correct that.”

When New Zealanders head to the polls
for the 2020 election they will be asked
to vote on one extra question – should
marijuana be legalised for personal use.
Given the far-reaching implications of
the referendum, we might expect this
question to be driven by the best evidence
and science available. But it isn’t.
Kiwis will be asked to vote on the
referendum thanks to the political
horse trading that led to the coalition
Government, and the snippets of policy
that have arisen as a result. It would be
better if this was an informed policy and
a legislative change, because then Kiwis
have certainty. But this isn’t that. This is
nothing more than a pre-election promise.
New Zealanders deserve to be fully
informed about the implications and risks
of legalising marijuana because there is
evidence it does harm. Official advice to
Cabinet showed marijuana is detrimental
for brain development in people under
the age of 25. Officials also warned that
regular marijuana use increases the risk
of developing depression, psychosis and
schizophrenia and is especially harmful to
those under 25.
Other countries such as Canada are ahead
of us, but they are working through their
own issues. Its latest quarterly numbers
show 38 per cent of users bought their
marijuana on the black market where the
unregulated, tax-free, high-potency strains
may command a premium. There are also
some early signs that more Canadians are
using the drug and if that trend continues
it would be very helpful for New Zealand
to understand why and reflect lessons
learned in our legislation.
For many Kiwis, marijuana is part of
an epidemic of illegal drugs sold by
violent criminal gangs that is tearing
our communities apart, robbing young
people of their ambitions, damaging
mental and physical health, and ruining
lives. Even among those who want to rush
New Zealand into a liberalised marijuana
market, like the Greens and NORML, this
issue should easily meet the test to be
afforded Parliament’s full consideration.
It deserves the robust process of
public consultation, select committee
deliberations, expert evidence and debate
that would bring drug reform legislation
into law and allow the public to be crystal
clear what they’re being asked to vote on
in 18 months’ time.
That won’t happen and it’s a poor political
decision, even by this Government’s
standards. The Government has decided
that New Zealanders will have to rely
on a draft Bill when they vote in 2020,
despite trumpeting for a long time now
the referendum would be binding. To put
that another way, Kiwis are being asked
to say yes or no to a referendum that is
based on a Bill that may not survive intact
through a select committee in the next
Parliamentary term. Basically, what the
public votes on in 2020 may completely
change by the time any actual Bill is
introduced to the House, before changing
again at Committee.
This Government has made a speciality
out of bad process leading to bad
outcomes. It can’t be allowed to do that
on legalising a drug that divides New
Zealanders and will change the social
fabric of our society. Could it lead to
more young people becoming regular
users, distracting them from education
and the fulfilment of life? Will drugs in
the workplace become a bigger problem,
and how do you test for impairment?
Are we comfortable to share the road
with someone who is driving stoned?
Will it really drive organised crime out
of our communities? Will it be taxed like
tobacco and alcohol? How will they test
the products?
Add to that the risks that haven’t been
considered like approval for ‘edibles’;
marijuana infused snacks like lollipops
and gummy bears that could be
accidentally consumed by children. This
could change the fabric of New Zealand
and National is duty-bound to hold the
Government to account. Even though this
would be a conscience vote in the next
Parliament, we owe it to those MPs to get
this right. The Government promised New
Zealanders a binding referendum and it
has let us down with what is proposed.
New Zealanders deserve to know what
they’re voting for.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand
has revealed that the number of homes sold
nationwide down 11.5% compared to April
last year, and the lowest number of homes
sold in the month of April for five years.
But when compared to last month figures,
it seems that the market is relatively static
with the national median price of $585,000
in April unchanged from March, but up
6.4% compared to April last year.
In Auckland, it still looks as though
property sales are still in a slight decline
where only 1608 properties were sold in
April, down 16.3% from April last year, and
an 11 year low for the month of April. But
experts suggest that this is to be expected
and not as dire straits as it may seem, as
median prices in the region have remained
largely flat for the last three years,
remaining within a fairly tight band around
$850,000 since August 2016 and the latest
figures suggest they show no sign of spiking
up again anytime soon.

accounts dating back to the 14th
century. Characterized by ongoing
narration and static visual imagery,
The Lost Legends is exceptionally
informative in its content.
After many years of research on

Lucknow who excelled at Marsiya poetry
(lamentation verses), Talib got engrossed
in making short documentaries in Iran
and Iraq, a series on those members
of the Ahl al Bayt ( family of the holy
Prophet) who have been unheard or
unspoken of for centuries. It mainly
showcases the lives of the several
children and grandchildren of the
Holy Imams and their migration to
various countries over the years due
to persecution by the Ummayad and
Abbasid dynasties. The series also covers
Prophets and companions. Some of their
shrines are located in such isolated and
breath-taking locations you have to see
to believe they actually exist. The films
are all between five to eight minutes

“It all started with a four and a half
minute clip I made in Najaf, about
the Waadi-us-Salam cemetery (the
largest cemetery in the Muslim world)
on my phone. This was when I went
to Iraq for Arbaeen (the fortieth day
after martyrdom of Imam Hussain)
in December 2015. The next year I
made a documentary on Durr-e-Najaf
(religious quartz stone) which was very
well received worldwide. It gave me the
required boost,” he reveals about what
started him on his independent journey
of filmmaking.
So far the history of these personalities
has been limited only to books and
most of the books have been limited to
Arabic and Persian languages. So why
did he choose to portray their stories?
“The personalities themselves are in
thousands, way more than one can
know of in a lifetime. Their shrines and
tombs are located far and wide covering
numerous countries and varying
terrains right from forests, mountains,
valleys and deserts to cities and villages.
We know there’s no substitute for visiting
historic places and experiencing first-hand
the stories they tell and the history they bring
to life, but for the times when you can’t get out
to a historic site watch a documentary. Abu

capture history through visuals is “I
hope to raise awareness about Islamic
history and heritage. I hope to portray
the rights of Prophet Mohammed’s (s)
family, the extreme sufferings they have
endured and the sacrifices they had
made to keep Islam alive,” Talib reveals.
Being an Indian, language is his biggest
barrier to shoot at these places. But he
says, “The process has been far easier
and way more exciting than what I
expected. I have found the office-bearers
of the shrines in both Iran and Iraq to
be very welcoming and co-operative.
And the locations, well they have just
taken my breath away. I feel like a time
traveller.”
He pursues his work by making a
base and filming documentaries in
and around it. Kashan was his base
when he filmed three documentaries -
Imamzadeh Hilal bin Ali (a) in Kashan
itself, Bibi Zobeida Khatun in Naragh
and Imamzadeh Ali Zainabi in Ozwar.
His films are difficult to make as there
are so few visual records of these places.
But he says Allah has made this easy on
him. “There are very few visual records
now but hopefully that won’t be the
case in the future. I’m working on it.
I’m slowly creating a massive database.
A unique encyclopaedia. It is for the
generations to follow.”

For more than a thousand years we have
lived and died without knowing these
personalities. I want people to open their

I have just begun. Unless Allah wills my
ultimate goal is quite a distance away,”
he concludes.
