“GURO”

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates
and the great teacher inspires.” – William Arthur Ward
The Indie-Advocacy Educational Movie entitled “Guro” tells the story of a strong and single-
minded teacher, Anecita Segovia. It shows how she inspires her students, mostly physically
handicapped and mentally challenged. She is a Special Education teacher who survives the test of
times during the Martial Law period of Marcos’ regime, as she struggles to achieve her mission in
life, while courageously face challenges with the educational system in the country. She receives her
award of being a role model teacher during a school program for her courage and teaching
excellence.
This film clearly depicts of what is an ideal teacher. Being a teacher is not an easy task, what
more if you are teaching mentally challenged students?
The character of Teacher Aning makes me wonder how she was able to surpass and faced
challenges as an educator. She possesses such qualities that is surprisingly amazing. She cares
about her students. She is conscientious about her students’ well-being and education, about their
school as a whole and its standing in the community. She knows her students’ strengths and
weaknesses. She knows when to push them and when to change strategies. She is able to pick up
on differences in her students. This enables her to adjust the methods, to determine the best
strategies for instruction. A teacher who care about her students also invest in them. She supports
her students not only through the best possible instruction. It is unfortunate that some students have
very few supportive adults in their lives. A teacher who cares is often able to make a difference for
students simply by her presence. She is willing to go extra miles for her students. She pushes her
students to achieve their unique potentials. A teacher like this keeps her ears open, and knows her
students very well. She is not afraid to take other path, as long as she is aware that this path is the
right one and truly benefits her students. She fiercely fights for things that supposed to be done.
I believe that all the best qualities found in Teacher Aning are wrapped up in this one-word
mission statement: care. She is more than a teacher to her students. She places her foot under the
shoes of the students. She is nothing but an outstanding, remarkable and an exceptional teacher.
