What skills must be taught:
Categorizing by value, money can be exchanged for goods or services

Assessment: (C5) The student will be able to identify U.S. coins. Students will utilize mathematical processes to show
monetary transactions. Students will show their knowledge by creating multimedia of the coins and
their value.

coin.
1. Teacher Input / Direct Instruction / Modeling: (C6)
I will show students all of the coins individually. They will be able to view the coins up close with
their peers in groups of 4 where each student has a different coin. I will model an equation for
students with the coins so they know what is expected of them.

2. Student Activities / Guided Practice: (C6)

Students will pair up to create their own monetary equations and find the sum. They will
pair/share with a partner and talk about 3 things that they learned.

3. Independent Practice: (C6)

Students will analyze each coin individually in their groups. Students will create a multimedia of
the coins they learned about.

DELIVERY PLAN (C8)
OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to identify U.S. coins and create an equation for a monetary
Rigor transaction consisting of coin values.

OPENING:
Retrieval
Students will see coins on their desk at the beginning of class and spark their interest
since they are likely familiar with money.

TEACHER INPUT:
Relevance Students will be able to view the coins hands-on and understand that coin can be used
for monetary transactions.
MODEL:
Routing
I will model a basic equation using 2 pennies and the sum shown numerically. I will
also show the sum visually with coins for students to understand what I am expecting
of them and how to show their work.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Retaining / Rehearsing
Students will create equations with a partner.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Students will create multimedia to show they understand the value of each coin and
what the coin looks like.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING :

Recognizing I will call out coins and have students orally call out the values. I will check to ensure
that students have depicted each coin and the correct values on their multimedia.

ASSESSMENT:
Students will have an exit ticket where they have the pictures of coins with a word bank
that consists of numerical values and the name of the coins. They will need to match
the values and names to the pictures of the coins.
RESOURCES / MATERIALS:
Coins, Anchor Chart Paper, Markers, Tablets/Laptops, Pictures of coins, Magnifying
glass, Exit ticket worksheet

CLOSURE:
Re-exposure
Students will pair/share with a peer about 3 things they learned from the lesson.
