What is NANOTECHNOLOGY?

 At the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI),NT is defined as the

understanding, manipulation and control of matter at the above –
stated length, such that the physical ,chemical and biological
properties of the materials(individual atoms,molecules,bulk
matter)can be engineered, synthesized and altered to develop the
next generation of improved materials, devices, structures and
systems.
 Nanotechnology deals with materials 1 to 100 nm in length.
TYPES OF NANO-TECHNOLOGY

3 types of nanotechnology in textiles can be

distinguished:
 Nanotechnology in fibres and yarns (fabrics)
 Nanotechnology in coatings (textile finishing)
 E-textiles

Where can we use NT in textiles?

 It has numerous application in almost every major industry, including

textiles. There is considerable potential for profitable applications of
NT in cotton and other textile industries. Its application can
economically extend the properties ,performance and hence values
of textile processing and products .
 Imprpovement in Fibre/Yarn Manufacturing by using Nanotechnology
 Fabric finishing by using nano-technology
Physical and Chemical properties

 NT at the molecular level can be used to develop desired textile

characteristics, such as high tensile strength, unique surface
structure, soft hand, durability water repellency, fire, retardancy,
anti microbial properties etc.
 Finishing of fabrics made of natural and synthetic fibres to achieve
desirables hand, surface texture, colour and other special asthetics
and functional properties, has been a primary focus in textile
manufacturing.
What is a Nanofiber?

 A nanofiber is a continuous fiber which has a diameter in the range of

billionths of a meter.
 The smallest Nano fibers made today are between 1.5 and 1.75
nanometers.
 Nanoscale materials can be rationally designed to exhibit novel and
significantly improved physical, chemical and biological properties,
because of their size
 Nonwoven fabrics composed of electro spun nanofibres have :
a large specific surface area,
a high porosity
a small pore size in comparison with commercial textiles making them
excellent candidates for use in filtration, medical and membrane applications.

Nano particle

 Properties
Dramatic change in properties of a substance when
particle size reduced to nanometer range
Normal ceramic particle Brittle
Nano ceramic particle Deformable, flexible
Normal Gold Yellow
Nano gold Red

HEALTH EFFECTS

 It appenano appears to be emerging that during the production

process of certain nano particle exposure can have negative effects
on the health. However there is currently far too little data from
laboratory and animal tests to be able to conducts a comprehensive
risk assessment.

UV-PROTECTION

 Inorganic UV blockers are more preferable to organic UV blockers as

they are non-toxic and chemically stable under exposure to both
high temparatures and UV.Inorganic UV blockers are usually certain
semiconductor oxides such as TiO2,ZnO,SiO2 And Al2O3.

Antibacterial and Deodorant finishes
based on nanotechnology
'Ag fresh'
Typical example: when human body perspire the clothing in contact with skin such as
socks, shirts etcsmell due to growth of bacteria.
>This drawback is eliminated by Ag fresh finish
 incorporate silver particles in a size of around 4nm into fiber
 A material of superior antibacterial, deodorant properties with good laundering
fastness has been brought about by letting silver particles penetrate into the fiber
itself.

AG FRESH

 The 'Ag fresh' antibacterial, deodorant finish has been developed for
use mainly in
 garments worn close to the skin,
 Further applications of this technology are being planned for use in
uniforms, casual wear, shirts, bedding, nightwear, underwear, polo
shirts

Self cleaning clothes

 Titanium dioxide nanoparticles are catalysts that help break down

carbon-based moleculeS.
 Require only sunlight to trigger the reaction.
 The inventors believe that these fabrics could be made into self-
cleaning
clothes that tackle dirt, environmental pollutants and harmful
microorganism.

DANGER OF HARM?

 The extent to which nanoparticles, woven into textiles may or may not

be harmful to consumer’s health is as yet unknown. The release of
nano particle from Textiles as a result of use, aging abrasion etc.Can
not be ruled out.Never theless, suitable studies are absent to clearity
to exposure as well as the possible hazard potential.
Effects on human Body

 Some research says that nano particales are easily absorbed through
skin tissue.Once the nano particales on a fabric are absorbed into a
consumer’s skin, nothing keeps them from going elsewhere in the
body.
 According to a recent review on neurotoxicity of silver, most animal
studies indicate that after silver exposure silver was contained within
the blood brain barrier but did not pass it.
