SLE Reflection

Military recruitment amongst adolescents is a tricky concept to tackle, teens nowadays

grow up in an environment and are taught to pursue college as an only option. It is important to

know that college is not the only option there is out there, there are companies that can train and

hire you or there is also the military. In my experience presenting this project I found that it was

sort of difficult to tackle due to the limited knowledge about the military amongst our teens and

the misinformation about the military. While doing research and performing my surveys I found

it astonishing how misinformation and opinions really influence our students decisions while

choosing their future career path, thus affecting also their open mindedness about considering

joining a branch in the Armed Forces In order to be able to present this important information

and be able to change students minds about the military in general I prepared a presentation and

conducted various surveys to see whether or not after the presentation and spread of information

with aid of a professional helped to change and shift their ideas from a negative perspective to a

more positive one. With the help from my recruiter from the USMC branch I was able to gain

communicating skills to be able to talk about the military and get information about the benefits

and life in and out of the military. The survey results were much to my extent what I was hoping

to get back. After the presentation and talking to students I found that they were more open

minded and comfortable talking about their opinions and whether or not they would consider

joining the military. Some chose to consider it after acquiring the knowledge that they have been
misguided from and I believe that it was highly effective. With this in hand, I was able to gain a

lot from this such as communicating skills, background knowledge, being more comfortable in

teaching and giving information and getting an insight of what it's like to be a recruiter. I was

able to learn this because my recruiter does this in his career and he was able to mentor me to be

able to perform this presentation. I think that this project will benefit others because it allows for

them to get additional information rather than college so that they have more options to enhance

their career while also receiving the benefits and eliminating the misguided information they

might have received or heard.
