Speaking Part 1: Introduction and interview

Activity type

Students interview another student to nd out personal information

Classroom dynamics

Pairs

Time taken

15–20 minutes

When to use

After 1a, Speaking, Activity 5, Page 13

Preparation

Make one copy of the activity sheet for each student.

Procedure

. 1 Tell students they are going to nd out some information about one of their classmates –
someone they don’t know very well, if possible.

. 2 Hand out a copy of the activity sheet to each student. Check students understand the type
 of
information each prompt refers to and elicit questions the students could ask to complete the
sheet (see suggested questions below). For question 14, students can come up with any other
questions they would like to ask.

. 3 Divide students into pairs. Make sure each student is paired up with someone they haven’t
worked with yet.

. 4 Ask students to take turns to ask their questions and to make notes. Encourage them to nd out
as much as they can for each item on the sheet. To do this, they may need to ask more than
one question for each item. Allow about 10 minutes for this. Monitor and help if needed.

. 5 Ask students to introduce their classmate to
the class by telling everyone a few things about
them (not everything as this may take too long). Alternatively, for a more controlled response
or if time is an issue, ask third person questions for the students to respond to.

. 6 As an extension to the activity, ask students to write a paragraph about their partner using the
information in their notes. Stick the paragraphs on a wall for students to read.
