Guidelines

Dear Student,

As per your programme scheme in the Term 1 of Academic year 2019-20 you are to complete a course
titled MGN231: Community Development Project (L: 0 T: 0 P: 4). The basic course objectives
associated with this course are:

1. To identify the issues related to community development and to find solutions for
improvement.
2. To build creative thinking process and evolving behavioral changes in order to develop
effective problem-solving campaign.
3. Developing skills to promote unique idea among public aiming to originate substantial and
sustainable development bringing in difference in the community at large.
4. Ability to deliver effective presentation and written report covering major issues and
suggestions related to the Project.

Inorder to complete this course the specific guidelines for the students with regard to this course are:

 What is Community Development?


Community development project combines learning objectives and community service so that
the students can enhance their personalities while being socially sensitive to the issues face by
the community. The project provides students with the opportunity to collaborate and engage
with a not-for-profit or non government organizations by undertaking a project targeted at the
identification and eradication of the problems faced by the community at large. These can be
sensitization regarding cleanliness, personal hygiene, health awareness camps etc. Students will
meet with leaders of the organization, community members, people already working in this
field etc. and develop an action plan to raise awareness about the problem identified by them
and work towards seeking the possible resolutions to the problem with the help of local
community people. The students shall present their project work at the end of the course.
Students will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills while working on the project
such as complexity of understanding, problem analysis, problem-solving, critical thinking, and
cognitive development. They demonstrate greater interpersonal development, particularly the
ability to work well with others, and build leadership and communication skills. The project
shall be designed via collaboration between faculty and community partners, such as non-
governmental organizations or government agencies. This project shall give the students
experiential opportunities to learn in real world context and teach them civic responsibility.

 Fields where to carry out the project?


The students registered in this course can carry out their project in various avenues like:
1. Community development projects related to social change and development like projects
related to cleanliness, sanitation, conservation of natural resources etc.
2. Community development projects related to economic upliftment like skill development
programmes, illiteracy eradication etc.
3. Community development projects related to moral values like blood donation programmes,
animal protection etc.
A suggestive list of Community Development Projects is given as below:
1. Help people paint and repair their homes.
2. Volunteer to clean up trash around a neighborhood.
3. Set up an art exhibit at a local business, sell the creations, and use the money to fund a
cause in your community.
4. Organize a campaign to raise money for new playground equipment, or reconstruct the
playground yourself.
5. Donate or raise money for your local Red Cross.
6. Organize a community blood drive.
7. Tutor children during or after school
8. Donate stuffed toys to children in hospitals.
9. Organize games and activities for children in hospitals or who are visiting hospitalized
relatives.
10. Collect baby clothes and supplies to donate to new parents.
11. Organize a Special Olympics event for children and teenagers.
12. Collect used sports equipment to donate to families and after-school programs.
13. Give free music lessons to school children.
14. Organize a summer reading program to encourage kids to read.
15. Clean up a local park.
16. Sponsor a recycling contest.
17. Participate in the cleanup of a local river, pond, or lake.
18. Help repair or paint a local homeless shelter.
19. Donate art supplies to kids in a homeless shelter.
20. Help organize and sort donations at a homeless shelter.
21. Paint park benches.
22. Donate used books to your local library.

It is highly desirable that while working on the Community Development Project the
students get associated with some Non Government Organization (NGO) working on
some Community Development Areas. In this regard the students are expected to do the
following:
1. Identify atleast 4-5 NGOs in your city working on community development areas (specify
the names of these shortlisted NGOs at the appropriate place on the interface provided in
your UMS login for registration of Community Development Project).
2. Hold preliminary talks with them so that an appropriate Project area can be decided and if
possible get a mentor allocated by the NGO for yourself.
3. Finalize the best fit NGO wherein you can complete your project and specify its name on
the interface alongwith the description that why you have chosen that organization.
4. The NGO with which you have carried out your Project shall be required to authenticate the
number of hours spent by you on the Project as well as your contribution to the cause as per
Annexure 2.

 Minimum time duration of the project and when to carry out the Project.
As per the course description the course is a 2 credit course (L: 0 T: 0 P: 4) and the student
project undertaken must involve a minimum of 30 hours time duration of the student
involvement in the project distributed in a period of 4-6 weeks (from June 5 th, 2019 to July 20th,
2019). Thus the students are required to complete this course during their Summer break with a
choice of doing it at their native places.

 How to register for the project (on UMS interface).


The students are required to start exploring the area for their project from June 1 st, 2019
onwards and decide upon the nature and the name of the project and on the provided interface
(snapshots attached). The students are required to submit the following details with regard to
the project latest by June 7th, 2019 on the interface provided:
1. Title of the Project.
2. Location for the execution of the Project.
3. Brief Description of the Project.
4. Names of 4-5 NGOs shortlisted for carrying out the Project.
5. NGO finally selected to carry out the Project and the reason for selection of that NGO.
6. Mentor (if any) from the concerned NGO only in the execution of the Project.

 Written report submission of the project and its contents.


At the completion of the Project the student is required to prepare a written report (with format
of the same attached as Annexure 1 & 3) and a presentation regarding the project of about
1000-1200 words describing the following aspects:
1. Problem Identification.
2. Cause of the problem identified.
3. Objective of the Project.
4. Various actions taken to resolve the problem.
5. Control mechanism applied so that the problem does not arises again.
6. In addition to above a Power Point Presentation shall also be submitted regarding the
progress of the project supported by video clips, photographs (before and after) and
testimonials by people touched.
7. Presentation of the Project.
This written report alongwith the Power Point Presentation has to be submitted by the student
at the time of joining of the student for Term 1 of Academic year 2019-2020 of their
programmes to the Community Development Project incharge of their section to be notified
later.

 Evaluation of the project.


The course is evaluative in nature and evaluation shall be done on the basis written report
submitted by the student and the Power Point Presentation presented by the student. The
evaluation shall be done by a panel of evaluators selected by the University and grades shall be
awarded on the basis of this evaluation only and the basis of evaluation shall be:
1. Planning of the Project.
2. Objective achievement of the Project.
3. Innovativeness and uniqueness in issue resolution with regard to the project.
4. Coverage, Reach and Effectiveness of the Project undertaken.

 Certifications associated with the project.


The projects of students which shall be considered to have been successfully completed (award
of pass grades) shall be forwarded to various corporate on the University panel for award of
certificates. Certain corporate like Adani Foundation have shown keen interest to appreciate the
efforts of students successfully completing their Community Development Projects specifically
with regard to their initiatives that include Swachagraha (for details refer to
adanifoundation.org) by awarding them “Certificates of Recognition”.

 Inability to obtain Pass grade in the Course.


The students not able to obtain Pass grade in the course shall be awarded F grade in the course
and these students shall be liable to complete this course by registering the course as a backlog
course in any of their upcoming term and re performing the Project all over again.

 Deadlines.
Last date for the submission of the title of the Project by the students is June 7th, 2019.
After the submission of the Title of the Project its approval shall be done by the faculty in a
maximum time of 24 hours and the student can only start working on the project after its title
and description has been approved.

5. Effectiveness of the Project (in about 150-200 words).
6. Conclusion (in about 200 words)

Step by Step Procedure


The procedural methodology to be followed by the students for the completion of Community
Development Projects is given as below:
Step 1: On reaching your hometown identify a community development area which needs to be
addressed or further improvements can be made in the same.
Step 2: It is highly desirable that you carry out your Project in association with an NGO. Hence
identify at least 4-5 NGOs with which you can carry out your Project work. Upload their names
at the space provided on the interface.
Step 3: Out of the identified NGOs shortlist one NGO with which you will accomplish your
project. Specify its name on the interface alongwith the reason for your selection of that NGO
to work with.
Step 4: Incase possible also get allocated a mentor by the NGO in resolving the issue (a mentor
can be someone already involved with the resolution of the issue maybe working with that
NGO). Upload the details of the mentor on the space provided on the interface.
Step 5: On the provided interface upload the Title of the Project alongwith the location where
you are going to perform the Project. Also upload a brief description of the Project being
undertaken by you in about 50 words.
Step 6: Once the title has been uploaded it would be sent automatically to the University
faculty for approval, the approval of the project title would be done in a maximum time span of
24 hours and shall be intimated to you only on the interface after which you can start working
on the Project.
Step 7: However, in case the project title is not being found satisfactory by the faculty certain
suggestions will be sent to you on the basis of which rectifications shall be made by you in the
Project title and description provided by you and the same shall be re submitted for approval.
Step 8: A student is expected to spend a minimum of 30 hrs on the Project being undertaken.
However, the student can also work on the project for an increased duration of time inorder to
accomplish the objectives of the Project.
Step 9: The students are required to collect photographs (before and after), videos and
testimonials (if any) during the project to be included in the presentation to be submitted at the
time of evaluation.
Step 10: The students should get signed document from the people directly concerned with the
project undertaken about how the conduct of this project has led to an upliftment of the society.
Step 11: Finally the students are required to prepare a report as per Annexure 1and 3 and also
obtain a certificate regarding the project from the NGO as per Annexure 2 about the Project
undertaken by them and also prepare a Power Point Presentation regarding the same (which
shall include the photographs (before and after), videos and testimonials alongwith a
description of the Project undertaken)
Step 12: The students shall be evaluated by a panel of evaluators on the basis of the written
report and the presentation of the students and grades shall be awarded accordingly to the
students.
