Night – Holocaust Research Project

You have just learned a lot about the Holocaust through a PowerPoint
presentation. We still have only scratched the surface of what occurred during the
Holocaust and World War II. You are going to be responsible for doing some of your
own research. Once we have completed our research on this event and time in history,
we will have enough background to begin reading the novel, Night. The research that
you are about to do is going to be used to help provide you with the insight into what was
occurring so you understand it when you come across it in the text.
For this project, you will be required to complete three important research topics.
The research that you find needs to be documented for each topic. Below you will see a
three by three board with different topics that you will be researching. This tic-tac-toe
style board is going to be used to select what you will be researching. Depending on
what you are interested in researching will help you select the path for your research
topics. You must go in one direction either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Once
your have selected your path, you must see the teacher and let him or her know what you
will be researching. Keep in mind that you are researching a very serious topic and your
research should be taken seriously. You may come across content that is graphic in
nature and must be handled maturely. If you cannot handle the topic or material that
you’re researching, then you need to see the teacher so that your research topic can be
adjusted.

Death Camp
There were six main death camps that were erected during the Holocaust:
Auschwitz – Birkenau, Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Majdanek, and Treblinka. These
camps only focus was to murder and process Jews. Choose one death camp to research
and see Mr. Cavender to get it approved. Only a certain number of people will be
allowed to research each camp.

Concentration Camp
There were numerous concentration camps that were erected during the
Holocaust. These camps are so numerous that it would be difficult to research all of
them. Choose from the following list for your concentration camp and see Mr. Cavender
when you’ve decided: Dachau, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, Neuengamme, Stutthof,
Ravensbrueck, Sachsenhausen, Plaszow.

Ghetto
There were several main ghettos that were used during the war and Holocaust to
hold Jews captive. Please select from the following list to decide which ghetto you’ll be
researching: Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow, Lublin, and Lvov.

Map
You will construct a map of Europe that outlines three major areas during the
Holocaust. You can use an outline of Europe instead of drawing it by hand, but you must
input all of the other information by hand. You must include the major death camps,
concentration camps, and ghettos that were listed above. You must also include the
railroads that went through Europe and connected the different camps.

Propaganda
You will research the propaganda that the Germans used against the Jews. This
will include getting a hold of posters or pamphlets that were used during the period. You
must also research any other methods that the Germans used against the Jews.
