UNIFORM GUIDELINES AND INFORMATION

Policy and Rationale

The purpose of uniform guidelines is to promote student and patient safety, and to maintain
a professional appearance when dealing with patients, family members, and facility staff
team members.

Students are to wear uniforms and designated footwear while practicing in the lab and
clinical areas. Uniforms and designated footwear are not worn when traveling to and from
the college and clinical placement site.

The following criteria reflect the standards of the PSW program.

Uniform Guidelines in the Practice Lab, Simulation Lab, and Clinical Areas
❖ Centennial College’s Personal Support Worker program has a standardized purple
uniform that must be worn to the laboratory setting and clinical setting. You can go
directly to the company to try on and purchase the uniform. The company is Red
Cotton Uniforms located at 445 Midwest Rd., Unit 24, Scarborough, Ontario,
M1P 4Y9, telephone (416) 755-6155. You may go at any time this to purchase your
attire. Orders take approximately 2 days to be completed. Please make sure that
you mention the following codes: Top: Eggplant 310T; and Bottom: Eggplant
307P.
❖ Appropriate fit and length (i.e., pants must be ankle length) loose enough to allow
easy movement, bending etc.

Footwear
❖ For safety and professional reasons, designated footwear during labs (practice &
simulation) and clinical settings must be white with minimal stripes or
markings/branding, low-heeled, closed-toe, non-slip soles, comfortable appropriate
footwear (e.g. appropriate protective running shoes).
❖ Designated footwear is to be used within the lab and clinical settings. For infection,
control reasons designated footwear used in the clinical setting must not be worn in
the College, in the lab, and in the public environment at any time.
Sweaters and Warm-Up Jackets
❖ White cardigans or warm-up jackets that match uniforms may be worn. Please
remove any sweaters or warm-up jackets prior to giving direct client/resident/patient
care.

Jewelry, Personal Hygiene, and Identification

❖ Students must wear Centennial College photo-ID nametags while in the clinical
placement or participating in simulation labs.
❖ A plain gold wedding band and stud earrings may be worn; hoop or dangling earrings
are not to be worn, as they are a safety hazard.
❖ Hair that is longer than shoulder length must be tied back and off the shoulders.
❖ Fingernails are to be short, clean and free of polish. Nail extensions cannot be worn.
❖ Good grooming and personal hygiene must be maintained; this includes regular
bathing, use of antiperspirants and good oral hygiene.
❖ Scent-free environments are vigilantly enforced in the Personal Support Worker
program: avoid using perfumes, aftershave, and other scented products as many
people have allergies and sensitivities to these products.
