PREFACE

This Self-Learning Kit will help you deepen your knowledge about the

different hand tools in Horticulture. This material is designed for Grade 7

students who need remediation and willing to learn in their own pace.

For you to start, remember the following tips in achieving successfully

the objectives of this Self-Learning Kit: keep this material in good condition

and neat all the time; do not write any unnecessary things on its pages; use

separate paper as your answer sheet; read and follow the instructions

carefully; answer the given task before you start the lesson; and lastly, work

diligently and honestly.


It is important to know the different hand tools in horticulture to

achieve the Learning Outcomes 1 (Identify appropriate farm tools according

to requirement.) This Self-Learning Kit mainly focus on the different hand

tools that you will use for gardening.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, you must be able to:

1. Identify the hand tools in Horticulture;

2. Classify the different hand tools according to their classification;

and

3. Give the function of each tool.

that’s what you’re going to learn in this material.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

HAND TOOLS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

According to K to 12 Basic Education Program Learning Materials for

Grade 7⁄8, Technology & Livelihood Education, Horticulture there are five

classifications of tools that you will encounter (a) digging tools; (b) cutting

tools; (c) cultivating tools; (d) harvesting tools; and (e) other materials.

Horticulture is the art and science of growing fruits, and

vegetables.

Hand tools are usually light and are used without the help of

animals or machines.

are being used in performing farm activities which

involve small areas like school and home garden.

A. There are six(6) digging tools, namely:


Crowbar (bareta) is used for digging big holes

and for digging out big stones tree and stumps.

Grab hoe (asarol) is used for breaking hard topsoil and

pulverizing soil.
Pick mattock (piko) is used for digging canals, breaking

hard topsoil, and digging up stones and tree stumps.

Shovel (pala) used in removing trash, ,digging loose

soil , moving soil from one place to another, and

mixing soil media.

Spade (palang lapad) is used for removing

trash or soil, digging canals, and mixing soil

media.
Spading fork (palang tinidor) is used for loosening

the soil, digging out root crops, and turning over

the materials in a compost heap.

B. There are four (4) cutting tools, namely:

Axe (palakol) is used for cutting trunks or branches

of trees and bigger posts.


Bolo (itak) is used for cutting weeds, tall grasses, and

chopping of branches.

Knife (kutsilyo) is used for cutting planting

materials, harvesting, and used in performing

other operations in crop production.

Pruning shears (malaking gunting) are used for

cutting branches of planting materials and

unnecessary or unproductive branches of plants.

C. There are four (4) cultivating tools, namely:


Hand cultivator (pangbakulkol) is used for cultivating the garden plot

by loosening the soil and removing weeds growing around the plant.

Hand fork (maliit na tinidor) is used

for cultivating the soil in between rows

of plants.

Hand trowel (maliit na pala) is used for

loosening or cultivating the soil around the growing plants and

putting small amount of manure and compost in the soil.


Rake (kalaykay) is used for cleaning the ground and

leveling the topsoil.

D. There are three (3) harvesting tools, namely:

Bolo (itak) is used for harvesting bananas, sugarcane,

and other crops.


Harvesting knife (kutsilyo) is used for harvesting

vegetable crops.

Sickle (karet) is used for harvesting rice and for cutting

grasses for animal feeds.

E. There are four (4) other materials, namely:

Knapsack sprayer is used for applying insecticides,

herbicides, and fertilizers.

Trigger sprayer (pangwisik) is

used in applying insecticides,


fungicides in seed boxes, seed trays, and seedbeds.

Sprinkler (rigadera) is used for watering seedlings and

young plants.

Wheel barrow (karitelya) is used

for hauling (pinaglalagyan)

and transporting growing media, fertilizers, and farm supplies.

REMEMBER
In order to do horticultural operations successfully, one must have a

good working knowledge of the tools before using them. Keeping tools in

good working condition is half the formula for being safe. The other half is

the ability and awareness of the person using the tools.

Safety = Good working tools + Able and aware worker
