2. Questions and Answers

Q. I have been offered a school place, what do I do now?

A. If you do not wish to accept this place, you need to let us know as soon as possible but definitely
by 15 March 2019 so that we can give the place to someone else. You must also reply by 15 March
2019 and let us know if you wish to accept. If you applied online please update your online
application, if you received a letter please return the reply slip to the address stated. Failure to reply
may result in your offer being withdrawn and the place being offered to another child. If you decline
the offer of a school place it will become your responsibility to secure an alternative school. Unless
you already have an offer at an alternative school, we advise you to accept the offer that you have
received until you get one at a school you prefer. Accepting an offer for a school that you might not
want does not prejudice your waiting list position or appeals for any higher preference school.

Q. Why have I been offered a school that I did not apply for?
A. We are required to offer schools that still have vacancies to children that were not eligible for any
of the schools that they had applied for. If you have received an offer for a school that you did not
apply for, your child’s name will automatically go on the waiting list for each school that you named
as a preference that they are eligible for. You also have the right of appeal. We would advise you to
accept our offer whilst you wait to see if you receive an offer at one of your preference schools from
the waiting list.

Q. Why have I been offered a school that is further away from the schools I applied for?
A. Some children, who were not eligible for any of the preference schools that they named on their
application, have been offered a place at another school that had vacancies remaining after the
initial allocation of places. It is possible that the school is further away than the other schools that
you applied for. It is not always possible to offer all children their closest school. It is advisable to
accept this offer whilst remaining on the waiting lists of preferred schools. Accepting this offer does
not affect your waiting list position or any appeal you may make.

Q. Why have I not been offered a place?

A. A small number of children were neither eligible for a school listed as a preference nor for a place
at a school with vacancies. If your child has not been offered a place, their name will automatically
go on the waiting list for each school that you named as a preference that they are eligible for. You
also have the right of appeal. You may also choose to go on the waiting lists for other schools. We
will continue to monitor the availability of places at local schools, and if a vacancy becomes available
we may offer it to you, even if it is not one of the preferences named on your application form.

Q. Why have some schools allocated more places than there are available at the school?
A. Some schools allocate more places than they have available because experience shows that a
number of parents will decline their offer each year. This enables the school to initially offer a higher
number of places than they have available, because they know that their number will reduce back
to their admission number by the beginning of term in September.

Q. How will I know where I am on the waiting lists?

A. Waiting list positions for Sutton schools will not be available until acceptance/decline slips have
been returned and processed by the Admissions Team. This process often frees up places that can
subsequently be offered to other children. Sutton schools will be able to give waiting list positions
after 16 March 2019. You may contact the school after this date to enquire but please do not contact
them before. For schools outside the London Borough of Sutton, you should contact the local
authority in which the school is situated after 16 March 2019, though they may refer you on to the
school.
