Why should we join Beginning Band?  
Band  is  a  great  experience  for  students  to have in school. Music promotes brain growth and development, teaches 
fun  skills,  engages  students  in  their  school  and  community,  and  provides  a  positive  social  atmosphere.  Students 
can be involved in a wide variety of band activities in Davenport through high school and beyond! 
 
When can students register for Beginning Band? 
Students  try  out  instruments  during  the  spring  of  4th  grade.  Students  are  able  to  register  at  the time of instrument 
testing  in  the  spring  of  4th  grade.  There  will  also  be  a  brief window where students can register at the beginning of 
5th grade, but registering early is highly recommended! 
 
When does Beginning Band meet? 
Beginning  Band  students  have  individual/small  group  lessons  once  a  week  during  school.  Each  student  will  be 
assigned a day and time they will be pulled out of class each week. 
 
Beginning  Band  also  meets  as  a  full  group  after  school  every  Wednesday,  from  2:00pm  to 2:45pm. Students go to 
Smart  Intermediate  School  for  a  required  rehearsal  with  band  students  from  Monroe  and  Hayes  Elementary 
Schools.  Monroe  students  will  walk  to  Smart; Hayes students will take a school bus to Smart. Students will need to 
walk home or be picked up from Smart Intermediate School after these rehearsals. 
 
What do I need to do to sign up for Beginning Band?  
1. Complete  the  attached  Beginning  Band  Registration  Form  and  return  it  to  the 
school office. 
2. Obtain  the  instrument,  lesson  book,  and  other  necessary  supplies  (see  the 
attached Beginning Band Equipment Information on the back of this sheet). 
3. Consider  signing  up  for  the  Summer  Beginning  Band  Program  and  turn  in  the 
attached registration form.
