0 INTRODUCTION

Road safety does not apply to cars and adults who drive them. Even kids must be aware
of traffic issues and take steps to remain safe whenever they are on or near road. So, a ‘KidSafe’
program had been held on 31st October at Sekolah Menengah Sri Gading. This program
involved 30 students from University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia under supervision of Ts. Dr.
Kamaruddin Ambak, lecturer for BFC 32302 Traffic and Safety Engineering courses. 200
Student from Sekolah Menengah Sri Gading with one counsellor are also taking part in this
program. This program was to expose to young people about the importance of the traffic
system, safety, understanding and awareness of the importance towards self and community.

Several approaches and medium of learning are focussed towards way of delivery in
the activities. Those activities are based on pedestrian, cyclist, motorist, and drivers. This four
road users are one of the component and elements towards road safety. So, an explore race with
4 checkpoint are conducted in this activities. Students are divided into 4 group and have to
finish the task on each check point in a given time. In each of checkpoint, a crossword, mimic
and acting, information delivery and others related games are played to make student interpret
and discuss the task given. At the same time, give us chances to justify and evaluate their
knowledge on traffic system, safety and awareness of it. Furthermore, give their space to
develop their teamwork and soft skill.

To rate their performance and participation a rubric evaluation form are handed out to
each group. This is to ensure the objective of this program are achieved by evaluate their role
and function in the team to end a given task. This is by observing and evaluate:

 The student was able to identify and describe facts pertaining in the given topic
 The student provide good explanation and or discuss about given topic
 The student used information that was highly relevant to the topic
 The student was able to breakdown information on given topic and communicate
them effectively

2.0 METHODOLOGY

2.1 Checkpoint 1 (Pedestrian)

A group of participants were made and there were 4 groups. At checkpoint one the topic
that was conducted are about pedestrian. Since the school are in front of the main road,
pedestrian topic are easy to explain to them as they are indeed a pedestrian. Firstly, an
explanation and briefing about pedestrian and facilities that are provided about pedestrian.
After that, a video was showed to the participants, the video was about pedestrian facilities.
Then an activity which is a game called ‘Draw and Pass Along’. The procedure of the activity
are the first participants needed to draw a picture that are shown by facilitator in 20 seconds,
the other participants are seated in a row as shown in Figure 2.1.1 and Figure 2.1.2.

Figure 2.1.1 & Figure 2.1.2: Participants seated in a row during task

Next, the first participants need to pass the drawing to the next person without saying a
word about the have been shown by the facilitator. After showing to the next person, the
sequence continues, until reach the last person, the last person needed to guess what the person
before him had drawn. This purpose of this activity are to see the focus of the participants
during the briefing and explanation sessions. After the last participant had taken a guess, if the
participant guess the right answer, all of the participant from the group receive prizes. Each
group were judge using a form to get the ultimate winner at all of the checkpoints.

2.2 Checkpoint 2 (Cyclist)

For the second checkpoint, the activities have been focused to train the student and all
the participants about the element of bicycle in road safety awareness. The participant have
been allocated for five minutes in this checkpoint. The facilitators started the checkpoint by
introducing the usage of bicycle in main road. The theory was being added by asking the
participants about the personal protective equipment (PPE), bicycle lane, signage and other that
related during cycling.

Figure 2.2.1 & Figure 2.2.2: Participants replicate and act as PPE and signage

The participants then need to prepare for a scenario that they need to find anything at
surrounding area to be used as a part of personal protective equipment. One of the participant
need to act as the rider and others will help to install all part of the PPE for the rider. After the
first scenario have been done, the next theory is about the signage and indicators that shows
and differentiate the bicycle lane and main road facilities. Then, the participants will then
replicated the signage using their creativity and the facilitator will evaluate them.

2.3 Checkpoint 3 (Motorist)

The first activities in this checkpoint was ice breaking. Students introduced their name
and age. Students involved were aged between 13 to 16 years old. Road safety awareness and
why it is important were explained to the students. This activity improved their communication
and learning skills.

Then, they were briefed on road safety especially in motorcycle safety. General and
most common road safety tips were shared and explained clearly so that the students have an
idea about the message as shown in Figure 2.3.1 & 2.3.2.

Below are some of the tips that were shared:

 Always wear helmet
 Stay visible
 Keep a safe distance
 Stay focused

3
Other tips such as to keep the motorcycle in good condition and making sure the brake
lights are working were some of the other tips that we also shared. Road signs are one of the
road safety and rules that all road users need to know. Common rules such as the traffic light
colour means were share too. Other road signboard that were explained as such below:

 No parking sign
 T-Junction sign
 Speed limit sign
 School head symbol
 Give way symbol

The purpose of this activity was to increase their general knowledge and information on road
safety awareness.

Figure 2.3.1 & 2.3.2: Participants briefed and answers the question

Lastly, an activity to improve their listening skills and teamwork were conducted. They
were tested with 10 questions on general rules of motorcycle. Each students were allowed to
answer one question only. They formed a line where they turned their back on the question
except for the student who were answering the question. If the student weren’t able to answer
it, they may ask another student behind them only by discussing among them without showing
the actual question. This activity showed their participation even though if they answer
wrongly, they showed teamwork among them. In addition to the students’ knowledge, they
were given explanation and reasons on every single questions to make sure they understand
correctly on road safety.

2.4 Checkpoint 4 (Driver)

In this check point, the students are going to know the basic knowledge about the safety of
driver. The activities that had been done is:

i) Talk about Safety and Emergency Tools that need in the car.
They were briefed on the several items or tools that is needed when emergency happened
toward the driver or the car. The tools such as small fire extinguisher, medical kid or the
first aid and emergency triangle. All of this tools were show to the students and were
discuss among the student about how important the emergency tools is. The explanation
were taken about two minutes.

ii) Crosswords
For this activity the students need to complete the crossword about the road and the
driver safety. They need to solve this task together in order to enhance their group work
skill and communication skills. There are ten questions about the road and safety to the
drivers. They need to complete the task in two minutes.

iii) Signboard recognition

The last task is the students need to find the signboard picture that had been hide around
the check point. After they find the picture, the students need to write down the function
of the signboard picture that they found. They are about six to eight pictures for the
student to find it and state its function. The activity is held around two minutes.

This activity was chosen because they can simply gain the knowledge and share it among their
family and friends. After that, the students were given marks based on their correct answer,
teamwork, communication skills and time to complete the task.

3.0 OUTCOME ACTIVITIES

Based on the activity conducted, the participants were exposed more about the
knowledge of pedestrian in checkpoint one, the usage of facilities for pedestrian such as zebra
crossing and the walkway for pedestrian and importance of safety of pedestrian. There are some
of the participants had no idea what is pedestrian and some of the participants does not know
about the facilities provided for pedestrian. It is important for participants which is students to
know all about pedestrian safety so that they would know how to use the facilities especially
crossing the road.

The game ‘Draw and Pass Along’ is to teach the participants to focus and know the
facilities for pedestrian. It is important for the participants to know and follow all traffic rules,
signs and signals. The participants need to be aware of the rules vehicles around them must
follow to properly anticipate what drivers will do. This will help increase their safety. To make
sure that they are visible to drivers at all times and make eye contact with them whenever
possible. This is especially important at night, in low-light conditions such as dusk or dawn or
in inclement weather. Therefore conclude activities done on checkpoint one which is about
pedestrian safety and facilities.

The importance of this activity in checkpoint two is to raise the awareness among
participants about bicycle handling in road safety. The lacking of personal protective usage
among cyclists are the main issue that cause major injuries to the participants. By stressing out
the importance of PPE, the participants will aware that the PPE cannot be tolerated and are
necessary for every ride. The second objective are to expose the main characteristics of bicycle
lane to the participant. This theory will help to distinguish the other factors that always
confusing the cyclist at the main road. How the signage works? What is the main difference
between the main lane for motorcycle and cars and the special lane for bicycle? The participant
could conclude and analyse the main characteristics for bicycle lane and facility. The theory of
bicycle as an element in road safety have been extracted form traffic element and safety. In
German and Sweden, cyclists are the major user of road and had become one of the traffic
concern.

In third checkpoint, the students were going to learn generally about motorcycle safety.
The medium used to convey a message to the students were discussion and a set of game. They
were briefed on motorcycle rules and regulation before they were handed 10 questions about
the general rules. Each students were allowed to answer one question only. They formed a line
where they turned their back on the question except for the student who were answering the
question. If the student weren’t able to answer it, they may ask another student behind them
only by discussing among them without showing the actual question. This activity was chosen
because it is an attractive way for the students to enjoy while learning about road safety as
students mostly ride their own motorcycle to the school. Students were explained thoroughly
on the questions while being checked for marks. After that, students were given marks based
on how many correct answer, time to complete the question, teamwork and communication
skills. The activity was effective and simple as the things needed were only questions and
interaction with the kids. Effective communication skills will affect the learning process.

6
Furthermore, based on the activity have been done in check point four, the output that
can get from the activities is the student able to recognize and know the function of the
signboard that usually used or rarely used along the roads. The students also can share the
knowledge toward their family and friends. The students also able to differentiate the symbols
used at the signboard. This activity also encourage student’s basic knowledge about the
signboard function and encourage their teamwork and explanation on the signboard function.

Next, the activity about the emergency tools will enhance the students awareness about
the emergency situation and how important the emergency tools is which can help the early
stages of emergency toward the driver and the car respectively. The emergency tools such as
first-aid and fire extinguisher will help the early stages of emergency and the triangular
emergency is to notify the other road users about there is an emergency ahead. All this things
can make the students to encourage their family or friends to buy it and put it in the car which
can be used for emergency incoming.

Furthermore, the crossword activity is to encourage the students’ knowledge about

several items, rules on the road, the junction, and many others things about the driver and roads.
This simple activity was purposely done is because to enhance students basic knowledge about
things on the road the the rule that must be done before, during or after using the roads. The
students can come out with their critical thinking, combine with their teamwork and basic
knowledge in order to solve the crossword questions.

Overall, the student was being able to solve the task that have been given to them before
the time which make their teamwork is very good and also encourage their communication
skills among themselves and with the facilitators. The facilitators were able to make the activity
interesting to the students, so the students will felt happy while doing or finishing the task
given.

4.0 RECOMMENDATION

The Kid Safety program that been held at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri
Gading is an opportunity for us and the students of the school to learn and increase knowledge
about the safety while on the road. The road is a dangerous place as there were lots of hazards
that can cause major and minor injuries including death. The program that we held for our
project can be beneficial to both parties.

The program were successful and the students were happy and they enjoy the program.
With the program getting a warm welcome from the students, there were also some
recommendation that we can do to improve the Kid Safety program so it can be implemented
for the next semester.

First of all, the time of the program is short thus the activity that can be conducted is
little. If the time of the program is longer, more activity about safety on the road can be conduct.
The students will gain more knowledge about safety on the road while enjoying activity that
can attracted them to be more cautious on the road.

Next, we can recommend for the program to get sponsor from Public Relation Office
UTHM. Public Relation Office can provide souvenir such as UTHM notebook, pen or goody
bag. The program will be more interesting and competitive if there were some souvenir or
rewards for the students. The students will be more eager to participate to the program and they
will hungry for more program to be conducted by UTHM in their school.

Furthermore, the program can be improved by preparing and providing the students and
the facilitators some snacks and water. The activity that been conducted can be tiring as there
were lot of activities require for the students to think, run, cheering and many more. They will
be more grateful and energized to do lots of activities if snack and water are provided.
In addition, stationery can be provided for the students for them to use while doing the
activities. It will be easier for them to jot down important notes that been given by the
facilitators. The stationery also can act as souvenir for the students.

Lastly, preparing some questionnaire to get feedback from the students also can be
implanted for the next program. We can know what they feel about the program. We also can
improved the program by analyse the feedback from the students through questionnaire.

5.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we can conclude that the Kid Safety program conducted at Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Gading is successful. We achieve the objective of the program and
hopefully we can help the students to become more aware and cautious while on the road.

In addition, their school is located in front of the main road connecting Batu Pahat and
Kluang. The road is classified as federal route as there are connecting two cities. The speed
limit for the road is 90 km/h so the vehicles on the road are all dangerous for the students. So
it is important for them to know about the signboard, safety, used of zebra line, pedestrian
walkaway and many more.

Furthermore, some of the students already have motor licensed. Even though they have
passed the JKR test, they need a constant reminder about the safety on the road while riding
motorcycle. Motorcycle is a good transportation for them to go to school as it is cheaper than
car and faster than bicycle. But they need to be careful and be cautious as they were riding
through a federal route that have a lot of heavy vehicle such as lorry and bus.

Next, there were also many student cycling to school. Nowadays there are trends to use
bicycle “lajak”. Bicycle “lajak” is dangerous because the bicycle break are remove and some
safety for the bicycle is being remove for the sake of style. There were a case at Pontian where
there were 8 kids riding these bicycle involve in accident with a car and two of the kids are
dead. So it is important for them to know that their bicycle style is not worth to be traded with
their life.

This program also teach them to follow the rules and regulation that been implemented
by the government. They must know that if they break the rules they will get severely punish
by the law. We hope that this program can help them to understand that safety is number one.
