ESSAY WRITING – PROBLEM SOLUTION

Topic → Over tourism

INTRODUCTION

Introductory sentence → general statement about the topic

Over tourism refers to the situation in which the tourist industry has increased beyond the limits
of acceptable change, especially in popular destinations where myriads of visitors are received
on daily basis.

Outline sentence → enlarge the idea

As a result, not only are natural areas being spoilt, but also local residents suffer the disturbance
of rowdy crowds.

Thesis statement →

a) identify the causes of your problem (in this case the causes of over tourism)

The significant increase in low-cost airlines and the rise in non-hotel accommodation are
amongst the main causes of overtourism in the principal spotlight destinations.

b) state that there might be solutions to the problem

Nevertheless there exist some measures that may be taken into account to alleviate the impacts
of this problem.

FIRST PARAGRAPH → CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM

Topic sentence → paraphrase the causes you’ve mentioned in the thesis.

Cause 1: increase in low-cost airlines → paraphrase → rise in budget carrier

Cause 2: non-hotel accommodations → paraphrase → vacation rental by owners

The excessive increase in the number of travelers in some touristic areas seems to the result of
the rise in both budget carrier and vacation rental by owners.

Supporting sentence → state why the rise in budget carrier is a cause of your problem.

To begin with, the merger of budget airlines has allowed the low-spending tourist segment to
organize holidays choosing destinations that were previously unaffordable, thus leading to
overcrowded facilities and the consequent disruption of the wildlife and the residents.

Supporting sentence → give an example or an effect to clarify your idea.

A prime example of this would be the deforestation taking place in San Javier, Tucuman, in order
to build fancy hotels, stylish restaurants and to do tourist-focused activities to attract visitors.
Supporting sentence → state why the vacation rental by owners is a cause of your problem.

In addition, the rise in non-hotel accommodation has been regarded as further underlying cause
of over tourism. This is so because, tourist would rather rent a cut-price apartment or house
than paying high revenue taxes by staying at hotels.

Supporting sentence → give an example or an effect to clarify your idea.

Consequently, despite the growth in the number of travelers, most destinations’ economies
have not perceived a significant increase in their profits, triggering an underbid on prices.

SECOND PARAGRAPH → SOLUTIONS

Topic sentence → paraphrase the solution sentence of your thesis.

Nonetheless, certain measures can be taken to alleviate the impacts of over tourism.

Supporting sentence → state your 1st solution.

One possible solution may be to launch environmental and cultural awareness campaigns to
promote responsible tourism.

Supporting sentence → explain why this is a feasible solution

Local governments, residents and travel agencies all together should give talks or workshops to
tourists about culture, customs and manners therefore avoiding the negative impacts of their
stay.

Supporting sentence → give an example or an effect to clarify your idea.

For instance, distributing instruction leaflets on both how to preserve nature and social behavior
patterns of the destination country, would be an practical option to deepen visitors
understanding of the local culture.

Supporting sentence → state your 2nd solution.

Another measure would be monitoring non-hotel accommodations to ensure that all types of
housing would generate sufficient tax incomes.

Supporting sentence → explain why this is a feasible solution

Vacation facilities should be frequently controlled by the government in order to penalize those
who are not registered in the system or do not meet the minimum requirements of, say,
construction and maintenance.

Supporting sentence → give an example or an effect to clarify your idea.

CONCLUSION

However overwhelming the impacts of massive tourism seem to be, there exists a number of
viable measures that could be adopted to overcome/combat/alleviate this growing problem.
That is to say, were stringent tourism regulations regarding the environment and
accommodation to be impose on/upon those in the holiday industry, the advantages of the huge
influx of tourists received in popular/preferred destinations would certainly outweigh its
adverse effects.
