“Players are very sensitive to the behavior of their

coaches. They are able to explain very accurate what they
perceive as helpful or disturbing."

Disturbing and hinder performance: What helps players?

- to rigid guidelines of the coaches - Praise and cheer on

- Coaching during ball possession - Situation-specific approach

- without content statements - Control of the coach

Playing system:

People often talk about 1:4:2:3:1, 1:4:3:3 or 1:4:4:2 formations. Each

tactical system of play and its associated positional system have his
advantage and disadvantage.

The important thing is that each player must be familiar with

the task he has to carry out in his given position.

It is important that each player are aware of his objectives (what is

expected of him in his position) and how they are to be realised in the
context of the:
- team as a whole,
- the lines that make up the team and
- the individuals who make up the lines .

Trends in international Football
Attacking play:

• Possession is advantage

• Positional play is the first and most important element of successful

attacking

• Trend to play in possession, top teams take the initiative and dominate
the game.

• The best teams in the world play on the average 500 passes per
game.

• Ball possession and number of passes does not guarantee victory!

• Youth level – performance is as important as result

Trends in international Football

Here is a quote from Pep Guardiola about possession at

Barcelona:

“What I learned here is everything starts with the ball

and ends with the ball.
Sometimes we forget that it’s a game of 11v11 with
ONE ball. We try to keep this ball, we try to play with
the ball; we try to make everything with the ball.
This is what we learn when we start as boy here.”

Fast transition
Trends in international Football

”Transition is the most important aspect in

modern football – this means fast organisation in
defence after losing the ball, or a surprise attack
with tempo by opposite team after winning the
ball!”
José Mourinho
Trends in international Football

Transitions are a decisive factor in modern football. If the opponent is set

up defensively it’s very difficult and even almost impossible to score a
goal. The chances of being successful or deciding the match are the
highest on winning the ball, or even better, before.

On the other hand you have to react immediately on losing the ball! The
quality of a good team is shown by how quick it reacts after losing the
ball. The player next to the ball becomes a defender, he immediately puts
pressure on or delays the play so that his team can reorganise
defensively!
The players have to learn to read the game. It’s all about transitions. On
losing the ball you have to run the shortest way back into formation or
zone (also taking position of others = principle of the shortest way,
minimise time for organisation), or look for tackles to win back the ball:
Trends in international Football
Trends in international Football

Fast transition from defense to offense (1st action):

• Vertical pass (as deep as possible)!

• Vertical solodribbling!
• Diagonal pass for getting space away from the pressure of the opponent!
• Back pass for security!
• Freeing – gain time, fortune!
Trends in international Football

Fast transition from offense to defense:

• Offensive defending after losing ball (Pressing) and close the possible
vertical passing lines!
• Team organisation (block) in the next playing zone!
• “Go back“ and organise a deeper defending block!
• Deep organisation in front of the penalty area!

Prof. Memmert:
Trends in international Football

Conclusions:

 The behavior in the game against the ball is decisive in terms of

the number of goal chances in the game!

 More sprinting means, the ball can be more often recaptured and
you will get more chances to score!
Trends in international Football

Defense
Trends in international Football

Defense:

 Top teams have an above average goalie

 Back four is standard

 All players are participating in the defensive play (principles, block, physis,…)

 Central midfielder (number 6) also determine the team's behavior in the defensive

 A compact center as a tactical principle

 Team mentality
Trends in international Football
Defensive organisation:

• Make the playing field as small as possible when opponent in

possession
Trends in international Football
Defensive organisation:

• Moving to the ball in formation is a standard

Trends in international Football
Defensive organisation:

• Practice block mobility

Trends in international Football

Defensive organisation:

• Where do you start team defending ?

Trends in international Football

Defensive organisation:

• Centre of defense – centre backs stay in the centre!
