French Indefinite articles

Indefinite articles in English are a and an
Indefinite articles in French are un, une and des.
What is an indefinite article?
1. Used before a noun.
2. Indicates something new.
3. Indicates something not specific.
There are 2 types of nouns masculine and feminine.
Gender of the noun determines the type of article that we use.
Aeroplane is avion in French and it is masculine
If you want to say an aeroplane then it is “un avion”.
House is maison and it is feminine.
If you want to say a house then it is “une maison”.

Unlike English French has plural indefinite articles.

Des avions – some aeroplanes

Des maisons – some houses

Un – masculine singular
Une – feminine singular
Des – plural

How to find out the gender of a noun?

Most of the nouns (around 70%) ending with a consonant is masculine.
Un melon – a melon
Un chat – a cat

Most of the nouns ending in –e (around 70%) are feminine

Une mangue – a mango
Une vache – a cow
