Quantitative research
The methods that are used in quantitative research emphasize the measurements of an objective and the
analysis of data such as statistics and mathematics. The data that quantitative research focuses on is
numeral data to help explain an event to groups with differing levels of understanding. When you are
using quantitative research for a study, it is your goal to determine a link between two variables.

“Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical
analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing
statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses on gathering numerical data
and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a particular phenomenon.” - USC Libraries

Qualitative research

The use of qualitative research is to obtain information about other people’s opinions,
preferences and views on different subjects rather than looking only at facts. Qualitative research
is done by looking at what different people choose and why they chose that specific selection.
The reason that researchers use qualitative research is to help them to understand what people
like to watch and what they want in the shows that they view. Having this information helps the
producers of the shows to improve their programmes with new ideas.
“Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of
underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to
develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also
used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem.” - Snappy

Mock the week viewer comments

Below is a few comments that were left on the IMDB page by the viewers of the show. This provides an
insight into what the public’s opinion of what makes the show good and bad. This allows the producer of
the show to possibly improve the show so that it can be enjoyed by more people.
Below is a survey of people's opinions of Mock the Week. this lists whether or not they like Mock the
Week, what they like about it and what they would change with the show. Having a survey like this
allows the producer of the show to have the thoughts and feelings of the individuals who watch the show.
One of the major parts of qualitative research is controversy, from this we can see the audience's opinion
of what happened. A good example controversy is the situation that happened with frankie boyle (read
below). There were complaints about what frankie had said about the queen, this is one of the reasons that
frankie ended up being removed from the panel show.
Audience Classification
Audience classification is used by producers to help to provide an enjoyable program. They do this
through use of social economics such as income classifications and target audience. Audience
classification is a way to study a program and divide the audience of the show into groups based on
income, age and psychograph. This allows the producer of the show to build an idea of the best target
audience to create the show in mind.

When it comes to Mock The Week, i would say the target audience is lower class and middle class, in the
18 to 40 age range. I have come to this decision because, in my opinion, most of the jokes that the panel
use can be quite inappropriate and rude, this is not suited towards underage or upper class people.
