Mental issues caused by Social Media

A large issue affecting teens today is social media. These social media apps are causing

mental issues such as depression, anxiety, and addiction. When teens go on social media they are

being faced with images and posts of friends that make them feel alone and not normal. They see

these people with seemingly perfect lifes and then look at their own and feel like they are the

only one with their issues. There are issues that are clearly caused by social media and causing

very serious issues, yet everyone is still feeding into these triggers. The issues aren’t being taken

seriously, but they need to be addressed and helped.

An large mental health issue is depression in teens. A large factor in this issue is social

media causing the illusion of perfection and loneliness. On social medias such as Instagram,

people portray their lives as perfect. When teens look at these perfect lives, they feels alone with

their own issues. They see their struggles and sadness, and think they are the only one without a

perfect life. They also see posts of friends together, and everyone hanging out, and think they are

the only one alone. They feel lonely and think they are all alone with these emotions. Jordyn

Young say, “What we found overall is that if you use less social media, you are actually less

depressed and less lonely, meaning that the decreased social media use is what causes that

qualitative shift in your well-being,” (Young) said Jordyn Young, a co-author of the paper and a

senior at the University of Pennsylvania. This shows how when you don’t use social media, your

wellbeing and mental health is increased in wellness.

A large issue when teens are on social media is reactions to the media they are seeing.

When a child is depressed and seeing these perfect people’s lives online, they can have a hard

time with positive reactions to things like jealousy and failure. Kassandra Coulombe states that,

“In the healthcare industry, responding to social media comments can be a challenge. With strict

FDA regulations, many healthcare companies are hesitant to be active on these platforms at all.

However, social media is integral to any well-rounded marketing strategy, allowing your

company to interact with patients, provide product information and share valuable industry

insights.” When looking at how to help solve this issue, Rae Jacobson says a very helpful tip,

“Model a healthy response to failure. Kids have to get the message that it is okay to fail, and not

only that it’s okay to fail, but that showing it is okay, too. If parents hide their own failures, kids

are less likely to be okay with anything less than success. When things don’t work out as you’d

planned or a project goes awry, show your child how to accept it with grace,” she adds. “Let kids

know that failure is part of how we learn to succeed, that it’s nothing to be ashamed of and let

them see you pick yourself up and try again.” (Jacobson). When teens see their parents reacting

badly to things, they see how they do it, and think to react the same. So when parents model a

positive response, kids will follow and learn to do the same.

Another big mental issue caused by social media, is addiction. An addiction to

social media is very common in teen when misused. Sarah Fader states, “Most people

who have social media accounts do not get nervous or stressed out when they are not able

to check their notifications every five minutes. However, for those who have social media
Ray 3

anxiety disorder, just being away from their Facebook or Twitter account for a few

minutes can cause severe anxiety.” (Fader). When you use social media so much, you can

addicted to the seemingly perfect lives. You get distracted from real life, and it becomes

an escape. Except an unhealthy escape, it takes you away from family, work, and real

work. A way to avoid social media addiction is to always have a line between time for

real life and a time for exploring media.

In the end, a large issue today is social medias causing mental issues in teens.

This is an issue because teens become depressed, addicted, and anxious all heavily

influenced by their usage of social media. Overall, a large solution is having a small time

for exploring these social medias, and other time for real life. There always needs to be a

line between.
