INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

ENGINEERING FACULTY
ANDALAS UNIVERSITY
PADANG
2019
TASK 1

1. System Description
The course schedule is one part of the academic field
which is very important especially in the Industrial Engineering Study Program,
Faculty of Engineering Andalas University. All lecture activities are very
depending on the schedule. The planning of a good course scheduling will facilitate
lecture activities. Otherwise, if it is bad, then there are several problems such as:
clashing class schedules, students who don't get seats, lack of lecturers, lack of
classrooms etc.

2. System in a decision making context

A. Observer : Head of Industrial Engineering Department
B. Purpose : To manage course scheduling in industrial engineering
departement optimally
C. Environment : Andalas University
D. Inputs : Student who take the class, list of course
E. Outputs : Fixed course schedule for student and lecturer
F. Components : fill the KRS, choosing class, capacity of class, number of
student, complete class schedule, over capacity, KRS submission,
reschedule, ACC by lecturer
G. Relationship/transformation process :

fill the KRS,

choosing class,
capacity of class,
Students who take
the class, list of
number of Fixed course
course student, complete schedule for student
class schedule, and lecturer
over capacity,
KRS submission,
reschedule, ACC
by lecturer
3. System classification
A. Degree of detail
This system is black box because student don’t know the detail of the
course scheduling. Student only know the schedule after it is published.
B. Hierarchy of the system
The hierarchy of course scheduling system is narrow system interest
because it’s affects only on the department of the faculty in university
C. Types of system
It’s the static system, because the course schedule usually has the same
pattern for every odd/even term. So can be concluded that this system is
not affects by time.
It’s the stochastic system, because for some cases the class schedule can
be re-arrange by the lecturer.
The system is open system because there are some interactions between
system and it’s environment.
D. Control system
The system has open loop control because there are several rules that
student must obey so they can take the class

4. Six element of a problem

A. The decision maker
Head of industrial engineering department.
B. The decision maker’s objective
To minimize clash class, to get fixed course schedule for student and
lecturer.
C. The associated decision criterion
D. The performance measure for assessing how well the objectives have been
achieved
There are no clashing class scheduling
E. The control inputs or Alternative courses of action or decision variables
for achieving the objective
Student credit, Course scheduling plan
F. The context in which the problem occurs
Industrial Engineering Department

5. Stakeholders
A. Problem owner
Who are the persons exercising control over certain aspect of the problem
situation, in particular over the choice of action to be taken. The problem
owner is head of industrial engineering department
B. Problem user
Who use the solution and / or execute the decision approved by the
problem owner or decision maker. The problem user is majors.
C. Problem customers
Who are the beneficiaries or victims of the consequence of using the
solution. The problem cutumers is students
D. Problem analyst/solvers
Who analyse the problem and develop a solution for approval the problem
owners. The problem solvers is yola, dhia, puti, sheila, obed and laras.

8. Mathematical Model

Notation:

F : Fix Schedule
K : Study Program Card’s Submission
R : Reschedule
OC : Overcapacity
NS : Number of Students
CCS : Completion of Class Schedule
CC : Capacity of Classroom
CS : Choosing Class
LC : List of Courses
S : Student who takes the courses
FK : Fulfilling Study Program Card

F=K
NS
K = If CCS = ; CCS > 1 → CCS = R
CC
NS
K = If CCS = ; CCS ≤ 1 → CCS = K
CC

9. Verification

The mathematical model of the problem is verifying with the right-hand side
and left-hand side have the same equation.

Fixed Classroom (class) = Study Program Card’s Submission (class)

K (class) = CCS (class)
students
CCS (class) =
students
class
class = class
10. Validation

To validate the mathematical model, we have to check by using some issues

so that we know the model clearly.
Example 1:

Suppose: Diana Prince (student of Industrial Engineering Department) got 24

credit units for next semester, so she wants to take Production Planning & Control course.
She is one of student who takes in that course as many as 35 students. Then:

 Capacity of classroom (CC) = 40 students⁄class

 Number of Students (NS) = 35 students

So,

35 students
CCS =
40 students⁄
class
CCS = 0.875 class
After she knows the completion of class schedule result based on calculation, the
final step is she does Study Program Card’s submission.

Example 2:

Suppose: John Wick (student of Law Department) got 21 credit units for next
semester, so she wants to take Basics of Law course. He is one of student who takes in that
course as many as 40 students. Then:

 Capacity of classroom (CC) = 35 students⁄class

 Number of Students (NS) = 37 students

So,

37 students
CCS =
35 students⁄
class
CCS = 1.057 class
After he knows the completion of class schedule result based on calculation,
the final step is he reschedules his schedule until done.

11. Sensitivity Analysis

The next step to formulate the mathematical modeling is sensitivity

analysis of the solution:

Sensitivity Analysis Change on Capacity of Classroom

Completion of Class Number of Students Capacity of classroom

No
Schedule (class) (students) (students/class)
1 1.143 40 35
2 0.889 40 45
Change -22.22%

Sensitivity Analysis Change on Number of Students

Completion of Class Number of Students Capacity of classroom

No
Schedule (class) (students) (students/class)
1 1 45 45
2 0.875 35 40
Change -12.50%
