PROBLEM 1: The elastic limit of steel is 6.5 Pa (N/m2), find the
minimum diameter a steel wire can to support an 875 N weight without
exceeding its elastic limit.
GIVEN: FIND:

PROBLEM 2: A block with 400kg mass suspends on a 3m long aluminum
cylindrical rod with radius of 0.5cm. The elastic modulus of Aluminum is
70x10⁹ N/m². (a) What is the change in length of the rod? (b) What is the new

end goal that 70X70 comes on the lower and upper surface. Find the shearing
pressure, shearing strain and shear modulus.

PROBLEM 4: A nylon string has a diameter of 5 mm, pulled by a force of 200 N.
Determine the stress. Radius is 2mm
GIVEN:
SOLUTION:
Area:

Problem 5: A wire 2m long and 2mm long in diameter, when stretched by weight of
8kg has its length increased by 0.24 mm. Find the stress, strain, and Young’s
modulus of the material of the wire. g= 9.8 m/s2.
Constructed by: Pilapil, Kenneth
GIVEN: Initial length of wire = L 4m
Diameter of wire = 4mm
Radius of the wire 4/4= 1mm = 1x10-3m
weight attached = m= 8kg
Increase in Length = 1= 0.24mm= 0.24x10-3 m
g= 9.8m/s2
SOLUTION:

Problem 6: Carlo wants to brace his teeth. A stainless-steel orthodontic wire is
applied to his tooth, as in the figure below. The wire has an unstretched length
of 3.3 cm and a diameter of 0.24 mm. If the wire is stretched 0.12 mm, find the
magnitude and direction of the force on the tooth. Disregard the width of the
tooth and assume the Young’s modulus for stainless is 20×1010 Pa.
