I. Objectives:
III. Theory:
Electric current flowing through a wire produces a magnetic field. This principle
comes in very handy in the form of an electromagnet. An electromagnet is wire
tightly wrapped around a ferromagnetic core. When the wire is connected to a
battery, it produces a magnetic field that magnetizes the core. The magnetic
fields of the core and the solenoid work together to make a very strong magnet.
The best part about it is that the magnetic force stops when the electricity is
turned off.
IV. Procedures:
Part A:
1. The neodymium magnets on the ends of the battery create a bar magnet
with a north pole and a south pole.
2. When you put the train inside the coils, it causes an electrical current flow
through the copper wire, which creates a magnetic field in the section of
wire coils right around the train car.
Part B:
1. Present my Physics toy.
2. Discuss how I make.
3. Put the battery inside the copper wire.
4. Watch how it works.
VI. Analysis:
1. Why more magnets results in greater speed scientifically?
-As you add more magnets, you can increase the amount of
attraction of the magnets to the magnetic field created by the coil
and as there is more attraction the magnet can then move faster.
2. Why do we need only neodymium magnets and not any other kind?
-This only works with neodymium because neodymium conducts
electricity and that is what makes the “electro-“ in electromagnetic.
3. What is the Law behind this toy?
- Lenz’s Law
VII. Conclusion:
I therefore conclude, the factors that are affecting the speed of my
electromagnetic train are the strength of the magnetic field, the number of
the magnet used, the diameter of the copper wire and the diameter of the
copper coil.
