Child Protection Policy

Statement of Belief
The abuse and neglect of children are concerns around the world. Child abuse and
neglect are violations of a child’s human rights and obstacles to a child’s education, as
well as to their physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development. Academia
Cotopaxi endorses the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), of which our
host country, Ecuador, is a signatory. At Academia Cotopaxi, we believe that all students
have the right to be protected from abuse and neglect. We recognize that schools fill a
special institutional role in society as protectors of children. Schools need to ensure that
all children in their care are afforded a safe and secure environment in which to grow and
develop, both at school and away. Educators, having the opportunity to observe and
interact with children over time, are in a unique position to identify children who are in
need of help and protection. As such, educators have a professional and ethical obligation
to report suspicions of abuse to school authorities. Academia Cotopaxi seeks to be a safe
haven for students who may be experiencing abuse or neglect in any aspect of their lives.

Guiding Principles

 All children have equal rights to be protected from harm and abuse.
 Everybody has a responsibility to support the protection of children.
 All schools have a duty of care to children enrolled in the school and those who are
affected by the operations of the school.
 All actions on child protection are taken with the best interests of the child, which are
paramount.

Definition of Child Abuse

and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment
or commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s
