Mrs. Sydelle Brigman
4 Dedication
Each year the seniors dedicate their yearbook to a
member of the Prep Faculty or Staff whom they feel
have contri buted a great deal to the Prep community .
The seniors chose this year's dedication based on the
criteria of: personality , " Prep Prid e," service to the
school, and student rapport. The Graduating Class of
1983 has selected Mrs . Sydelle Brigman and Mr. Guy
Fraiture.
Mrs. Sydelle Brigman has been the receptionist here
at Prep for the past two and a half years and has
contributed a great deal to the school. Mrs. Brigman is
an importa nt part of the staff and is extremely helpful
to the stude nts and faculty. She is a very caring and
generous person , somewhat like a mother to the stu ·
dents. Mrs . Brigman 's cheerful personality makes the
students feel at home in her presence . She says " The
job gets pretty hairy and nerveracking at times ," but
she always manages a big smile and is willing to help
anyone in need of her services . We are grateful to have
such a caring person as a member of the staff .
Mr. Fraiture is the outdoor and indoor Varsity Soccer
Coach, the French teacher , and " A gentleman of the
first order". He is one of the most helpful and dedicated
faculty members at Prep . Mr . Fraiture 's great personal ·
ity is one of the many attributes which make him both a
great teacher and a great coach. He keeps his students
and players attentive at all times . Ever since Mr . Frai ·
ture became a member of the faculty three years ago ,
the students and the teachers have looked up to him
with great respect. Guy is always willing to help out
anyone in need of his assistance . We are very grateful
to have such a fine man here at Prep .
To these two peopl e we offer our heartfelt thanks
and prayers. Our years at Prep have been better for
having met you.

in some untimely turnovers and squeaked by 13-9. Prep 's anger
from the previous game was bestowed upon Bishop Walsh in
winning 24-12. Tobin passed for two TD passes to John Leasure
and J .C. delReal while Martin Sumichrast ran for over 100
yards. Homecoming was spoiled when St . Albans edged Prep
24-21. Except for three long plays by the Bulldogs , the defense
played admirably . The Hoyas then went on to meet city-ranked
St. Stephens . Down 21-7 at halftime, Prep held Stephens score ·

The Georgetown Prep J .V . Football team romped to a 6

win , 1 loss, and 1 tie season this year . This incredible record,
the best since 1970 , enabled them to take their second I.A. C.
championship in a row. Only Gonzaga kept Prep from an
undefeated season. Coach Matt Whalen deserves much of
the credit for a highly successful team . Coaches Shea and
Silk should also be commended .
One reason for the team 's victorious season was the large
number of juniors participating on the team especially the
strong offensive line , which was led by trkaptains Adrian
Zic , Larry Anderson , and Brian Johnston on the right side ,
and a powerful left side was led by Pat Fitzgerald and Steve
Dufour. This wall enabled running backs Eric Moreno and
Mike Mahn to move the ball effectively on the ground . Quar-
terback Scott Farr performed well throwing short passes to
Mahn and receiver Louis Jatta .
Perhaps the Little Hoyas most exciting game was against
St. Albans , when Prep came back from a 7-0 deficet to score
27 points and come out victorious .
The team 's defense was a powerhouse , holding Episcopal ,
Landon , and Mason scoreless . The defensive stars were LB
Bill Romer, MG Pat Bidwell , T Pat Fitzgerald , and Ends Pat
Beranek and Kevin Cusack . Combined with the impressive
offense , the J .V. Squad of 1982 proved to be a power in the Matt Whalen - Portrait of a J. V. Coach
I.A .C., and many of the players will be back to lend their
talents to next year 's varsity.

The Freshmen football team had a disappointing season , but

they still managed to defeat two opponents . Coach Kotter can be
proud of the teams ' effort.
One of the teams ' strong points was the right side of the
offensive line , anchored by co-captain Dave Rubino , who played
center. Tackle Mike O'hara and guard Rocky Bonbrest were both
effective . In the victory over Wakefield , the other captain Tim
Kirlin scored one touchdown and Paul Beck ran for another to
defeat the host team 14-13. Paul Colonna connected for both
extra points . In the other win, Jeff Adams intercepted two
passes, running one back for a touchdown. Paul Beck made a
spectacular 95 yard run in the same game .
Despite a poor record, the team played better together during
the late season. Hopefully, they will increase their abilities and
add to Prep 's success in the future .

The Georgetown Prep Cross Country team experienced a successful

season, which was helped greatly by their intense running in large races. The
Varsity , led by senior co-captain Harry Matternas and junior all·I.A .C. Walsh
McGuire , were victorious in the Salesianum Invitational, where Harry set a
course record in 16:35.9, and the Prep Classic, in which Matternas and
McGuire finished 1·2. The team ran second in the Woodward Relays , the
George Mason Invitational, the Metro Catholic Championship, and the I.A .C.
Championship , and fourth in the Maryland State Catholic race. Several
members of the team travelled to New York to compete in the National
Jesuit High School Championship , in which they finished behind a 1·2 finish
by Harry and Walsh and sophomore John Caldwell's eighth place. The rest
of the Varsity, freshman Larry Elliot , juniors Kelley Stewart, Ed Keenan ,
Tom Fox, and seniors Jahn McGee , co -captain , Tim Sullivan, Frank
Pimentel, Eric Harvey, and Matt Brown, produced well throughout the
season.
The J.V. ran well in the large races also, winning the Salesianum and the
I.A.C. Championships. The team was led by juniors Tim Dunsmore and
Charlie Buckley , sophomores Dave Comerford and Kevin Stack, and
freshman Holley.
Coach Mike Horsey , in his twelfth year as head coach, had this to say,
" This was our best team in six years ."
Mr. Bernie Ward, in his first year at Prep teaching and who served as
assistant coach, said, "The season was very enjoyable. The team had good
spirit which was evident throughout the season . There was a lot of
improvement among the runners over the season ." The team got a running
start over the summer, when each member ran on their own . Late in August,
the team ran to West Virginia.
Overall , the season was very successful due to the dedication and hard The main man - Coach Mike Horsey
work of each member. Because of the large number of promising harriers,
the team looks to be a contender for years to come.

Despite their overall record of 6-3-1, this year's soccer team, their first I.A .C. game and then went on to beat Sidwell Friends 2-
coached by Guy Fraiture, had a good season . The team practiced 1. The team lost its first league game in sudden death overtime to
hard and played well together. This year's team was very young , Episcopal 0-1 and then fought St . Alban 's to a 1-1 tie . Their next
consisting of three freshmen , five sophomores , three juniors , and opponent was Landon who beat the " Little Hoyas " 2-0, but the
six seniors. team quickly bounced back to hand St . Stephens their first loss
The "Little Hoyas " opened their season with a loss in a non - beating the Saints 2-0. The most surprising loss of the year came
league game to Gonzaga but sought revenge by beating Wilson , when Bullis beat Prep 1-0. The team remained in contention for
last year 's lnterhigh Champs , 2-0. They then defeated Bullis 1-0 in the I.A.C. title by winning over Friends 2-1. Next , Prep played
Bishop Ireton, a well -known team from Virginia , who played Prep
to tie 1-1 in what Guy said was their best game of the year . Their
next league victim was Episcopal who beat the team 2-1 in
overtime . The "Little Hoyas ," however , went to lose their next
two games to St. Albans 1-0 and to Landon 2-1. Prep's last game
of the regular season decided their overall league standing for the
1982 Fall Season . The team battled to a 1-1 tie in the pouring
rain with St. Stephens and finished the season tied for third place
with St. Albans .
Mr. Fraiture said that this year 's team played very well
together and that they " won as a team and lost as a team. " Two
sophomores Mario Ortega and Tom Scrivner were honored as
All-1.A.C. but their outstanding performances were made possible
by the help of their teammates. The team will lose only six
seniors : Bernie McCarthy , Paul " Disco " Murray, Eddie Ayala ,
Carlos Lukic, Bill Bradley , and Joe Conaghan . The " Little
Hoyas " should have an outstanding team next year.

Fine Season for J. V. Soccer

The 1982 fall J .V. soccer team finished with a 5 win and 3
loss season, defeating all I.A .C. opponents at least once. New
coach David Haughton was pleased with the team 's perfor -
mance. Although most of the players had never competed
together , the team showed good organization and ball control
from the start.
Left wing John McGuire led the team in scoring with eight
goals. Center forward Tim Mackey contributed seven, includ -
ing a hat trick in the opener against Sidwell Friends. After
shutting out Episcopal 3-0, the team lost a well -played match
to St. Albans in overtime 2-1. The next contest resulted in the
complete dominance of Bullis in a 6-0 victory . Following a
loss to Episcopal, the team avenged the defeat by outscoring
Albans 3-0. In their only non -league game, Prep lost to Ireton
3-1. The season ended on a high note with a second win over
Bullis , 4-1.
The J .V.' s defense was superb . The fullbacks , led by co-
captain Matt Battiata, allowed very few shots on goal. Goalie
Tim Light, the other captain, had three shutouts . Only ten
goals were scored against the team the entire season . They
finished with a league record of 5-2. They deserve to be
commended for a fine season . J .V. member awaits some action.

Stephens . Unfortunately , the team barely lost in each of the four losing to O'Connell by two . Prep had to settle for third place by
games by a total of nineteen points . The little Hoyas were forced easily beating St . Albans . After all games were played , the Little
to settle for another year without a league title. Hoyas record was 11-12.

The J.V . Basketball team had a fantastic season , winning

the I.A .C. championship . This was Prep's second consecu ·
tive I.A.C. championship in ten years. Their final I.A.C. re·
cord was 9-3, and they defeated all league opponents at least
once. Coach Kevin Dowd can be proud of his team 's record.
The team was led by the strong play of juniors Doug Olsen
and Jim Keeley on the front line . They were the leading
scorers. Point Guard Mario Ortega and wings Scott Farr and
Keith Marino completed the starting lineup . Tom Bednarz
and Louis Jatta also contributed to many of the teams wins.
One of the Little Hoya 's greatest acheivements was defeating
Episcopal, Bishop Ireton, and St. Stephens in away games.
This was the first time a Prep J .V. has beaten all three
schools on the road during one season . Doug Olsen scored 48
points in the three games. The team also beat Sidwell Friends
68-47 with 62% shooting. Coach Dowd and all the players
deserve to be congratulated on this fine championship sea·
son.

The Freshman Basketball team had

a successful season, finishing
second in the I.A.C. with a record of
6-4. Their overall record was 7 wins
and 8 losses. Mr. Scanlon, the
coach, is to be congratulated for his
inspirational leadership and
coaching.
Several starting lineups were used
during the season . At the end of the
season, Mike O ' Hara played center
and Tim Kirlin played forward along
with Mark Fitzpatrick . David Gildea
and Mike Barros started in the
backcourt. Paul Beck , Jim Moore,
and Paul Joseph had previously
been starters . One of the teams
most impressive victories was over
Bullis, 54-28 with Mike Barros
scoring 16. Although the Freshmen
team didn't win the championship ,
they have the potential to win the
I.A.C. c;1sJ.V. players next year.

This year 's Hoya Wrestling team had it's share of

problems , but managed to hold its own under the
leadership of all - I.A.C. wrestler Phil Merkle. While
lack of participation brought the Little Hoyas
problems, the team displayed many valiant efforts
and an awesome 20· 1 solo record by Phil Merkle .
Coach Harrigan , the youngest coach in the league,
provided the leadership, skill , and know-how
necessary for a winning team , but once again the
lack of participation held back the Hoyas from
gaining any significant ground .
At the end of their season , the Little Hoyas
competed with drive and determination in the St.
Albans tournament, but came up short. They hope to
improve their record next year.

Lack of Swimmers Drowns Hoyas
All I.A.C. Rick Schoeb
The Aqua Hoyas opened their season with dismal

prospects of attaining a respectable record . Most of the
team 's frontline swimmers from the previous year
were gone , and not many people came out to partici ·
pate in this year 's team. The season did have some
highlights - such as Ricky Schoeb 's 8 record breaking
swims, a feat which will be difficult to surpass . It was
hoped that some year round swimmers - Kelly Stew ·
art , Charlie Mess , Ricky Schoeb - who swim for the
area swim clubs would compensate for the lack of
swimmers along with strong returnees Larry Anderson,
John Schoeb , and Reilly Dolan .
The team finished with a 0·6· 1 record . Noteworthy
performances were displayed by freshmen Matt Bat ·
tiata and Craig Bulhulman . Sophomores Dan Piliero
and junior Craig Miller also contributed . Another im·
portant aspect of the Aqua Hoyas was diving . Sopho ·
more Tim Light and Junior Bill Codus gave the Aqua
Hoyas many needed points to stay within close compe·
tition in many meets .
The Aqua Hoyas had a struggling year. But hopefully
under the guidance of 3rd year Head Coach Rick Curl ,
the Aqua Hoyas will rebound and manage a winning
season next year .

This yearbook, in my opinion , is one of the greatest efforts

ever at Prep. Immense work was done to accomplish this . All
staff members should be praised . The 1983 staff was the most
inexperienced ever , with only two returning members . The new
recruits learned alot over the course of the year to become
competent staff members .
First , Craig Thompson dedicated a great amount of time and
effort to the book . He didn 't mind filing negatives , developing , or
taking endless photos. Also , Steve Ward and Chris Ryan helped
a great deal with the pictures . Photo Editor Andrew Leung ,
though lacking in time because of other commitments, orga-
nized well and got me the needed pictures . Layout Editor Ste-
phen Hull added a great deal of creativity to the book with his
designs . He performed any task asked of him. Juan Kreutz also
aided in the layouts , especially the senior pages . Mark Judge , an
individual with a great ability to think of hilarious captions , gave
many hours pondering over pictures to make the book more
enjoyable , along with Brooke Beyer . In addition , Mark also
typed a few pages . Greg Steis , whose " Let it ride " slogan carried
him through the year, produced a great amount of money and
worries from our moderator. Copy was done by Takashi Asakai ,
Adrian Zic , and Tim Giere . The sometimes overzealous and
cautious moderator Mr. Bill Macatee did a great job of censoring
our original pictures and captions . He was a plus , though , when
it came to sending out letters for contributions .
