Outline

Hook: Their stories are never told in the future never unfolds.
Summary: look at the psychoanalytic lens and look at how the fear of death can be played into
the commercial. Make it aware that the happenings in the commercial are unrealistic and that
people shouldn’t be scared of death. But also look at the effects of the unrealistic commercial
highs on viewers through psychoanalysis, the negative outlook.
Thesis: By observing this commercial through a psychoanalytic lens we can compare the true
intentions of the commercial and the viewpoint through the cycle analytical lens along with the
role eat those pathos and logos plays.

2. Counter argument
Some may say that the overall goal of the commercial was to simply make people aware of the
happenings of distracted driving. Not only that but have statistics and a storyline that could have
been Howard’s if he had not been hit by a distracted driver. However, when comparing the
reality of Howard’s life to his reimagined life it is clear that pathos is present when he shares his
time with his first grandchild. When in reality, he never got the chance to meet her. Not only is
pathos present, but ethos and logos are as well. Rhetoric is used in order to seek the desired
outcome of ending distracted driving.

3. Subtopic
When utilizing pathos the creator of the advertisement wants viewers to feel this sense of sorrow,
relating both to the laws that both Howard’s daughter and granddaughter feel. However, that is
not all the pathos identified in the commercial. It is also felt when people find the disappointment
of Howard Stein’s death being preventable. In taking it a step further, changing the song in the
unfinished story allows for an entirely different emotion to come about. However, in pairing this
with the psychoanalytic lens this further continues the court issue of fear of death. According to
Tyson death is the ultimate abandonment meaning fear of abandonment takes a huge role. And
that comes a creation of Howard’s unfinished story where denial is present.

4. Subtopic
And looking at ethos it sensual usage is when the author utilizes it and demonstrating the
particular time in the unrealistic story where the car misses Stein. In the cartoon, the audience
feels a sense of relief due to the car missing him completely. However, upon the realization of it
not being the true reality, it is assumed the person's values would come about. With that comes
the value of people putting out way diversions to ensure the safety of others. In applying
psychoanalysis to ethos, people can think about the self-destructive behavior that could be

caused due to over excessive upsetness. Otherwise known as the death drive. Not only that but
think of the trauma that may have led to the creation of this commercial.

5. Subtopic
To accomplish the goal of ending distracted driving the advertisement shows a significant
statistic. One that includes the number of people who die every single day due to distracted
driving. Although the commercial only states one statistic it still influences people to stop
driving distracted. Not only that but the significant difference in the display of the topic of
distracted driving causes for other feelings to come about. Often times people hear of car
accidents through the news. But by creating this commercial with both Howard’s true story and
his Reimagined unfinished story it gives another meaning to the topic of death through distracted
driving. As stated by Tyson when we die we die alone. This again creates the idea of the fear of
abandonment because death is the ultimate abandonment. This commercial amplifies that core
issue even further than in pathos.

6. Subtopic
The central fallacy present in the advertisement is false dilemma. The reality of Howard’s life is
that he died due to a collision by a distracted driver. And the ultimate reality or his unfinished
story, the creators of the commercial set and idealistic a life where Stein spends his time with his
granddaughter. In reality, it is unknown what his future life truly held. By only leaving these two
outlooks it creates a false idea and hope. They could’ve been many different happenings to
Howard’s life but the creators use the specific two outlooks to play on the emotions of the
viewers. One with the actual sad reality of Stein‘s death and the other with a happy grandchild
and grandfather. with psychoanalysis, selective memory is intertwined with the fallacy, false
dilemma. In finding a way to counteract the fear of death the defense mechanism, selective
memory is utilized. As Tyson states selective memory is modifying our memories so that we
don’t feel overwhelmed by them. But it can also be forgetting painful events entirely which leads
to denial bullet which is believing that the problem doesn’t exist for the unpleasant incident
never happened. Which in the case of the commercial is clearly shown in the unrealistic
assumption of stone but I can also be forgetting painful events entirely which leads to denial
bullet which is believing that the problem doesn’t exist for the unpleasant incident never
happened. Which in the case of the commercial is clearly shown in the unrealistic assumption of
Stein’s life. Further continuing the discussion of the change in music we can see how even that
one aspect changes the emotion reciprocated in people’s emotions.

7. Conclusion
In the end, the Creator‘s true intentions were to make more people aware of the happenings of
distracted driving. However, upon viewing the topic through a psychoanalytic lens it is aware
that the fear of abandonment is a playing factor of the creators. Along with the fallacy, false
dilemma, and rhetoric. All in all, it is important for people to learn that’s some deaths are
preventable but also people need to be aware of the possible influences the media has on people's
minds. In this case, it was not positive and only further continues the core issue of the fear of
death.
