Romeo and Juliet / Shakespeare Webquest

Using the links for each section below, answer each question. Be sure to answer all
parts of the question. You do not have to write in complete sentences unless it says to
(indicated by ​CS​).​ ​This is an individual assignment​. What’s great about Google Drive
is I can search through all shared documents for plagiarism very easily.

Take your time to really learn who Shakespeare was and different aspects of the culture
and society of the time period. You may type directly on this assignment and submit it

Stratford-Upon-Avon was important in the 16th century because Shakespeare was born
there.
2. Name the theater company Shakespeare was a part of.
Shakespeare was a part of the theatre company The King’s Men.
3. Provide 5 facts you learned from the video.
1) Shakespeare was also a poet
2) He had a set of twins
3) He was married to Anne Hathaway
4) His son died
5) He was an entrepreneur
4. What day and year did Shakespeare die? Why is this an interesting date? How
old was he when he died?
Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616. This is an interesting date because it was also his
assumed birthday (people don’t actually know when he was born but he was baptised a
couple days later). He was 52 years old when he died.
5. Summarize the section “Did Shakespeare write his own plays?” Why do people
think he may not have written them? Why do people think he did? ​(CS)
In the section, it talks about how it’s possible that Shakespeare might not have written
his own plays because of his lack of documented education. It has been said that other
scholars such as Francis Bacon might have actually written them. Some people
believed that he did write the plays because his name was on the cover of the scripts
and other things related to the play.

marriage to Paris. Read this site about marriage in Elizabethan England and answer
these questions:

1. What does betrothal mean?


Betrothal is a contracted marriage

Three marriage customs found on the page are that the father of the bride is
responsible for paying for the event, the garland should be made of rosemary and
roses, and that bridesmaids are responsible for the flowers/floral decorations.

Whatever the bride likes, as white for wedding dresses wasn’t a trend until later
2. How is the intention to marry announced? What happens if it is not announced

The intention to marry is announced by announcing it at the church three times. If the
wedding isn’t announced beforehand, then it’s considered illegal.
3. Describe the wedding procession. ​(CS)
The wedding procession starts with the guests and the participants walking from the
house to the church. These are known to be loud. The groom either walks with the bride
or they meet at the church. They rituals are performed by a minister and the words said
are essentially the same as they are now. The ceremonies are open to the general
public too if there is space.

A dowry is the things that the bride brings to the marriage

Three theaters that competed with The Globe are the Swan, the Rose, and the Hope.
2. How did the original Globe burn down in 1613? ​(CS)
The original Globe burned down in 1913, when a cannon shot off during a performance
of ​Henry VIII.
3. The Globe theater was rebuilt in 1997, and renamed Shakespeare’s Globe. Click
on the pictures of “outside” and tell me what you think here.​(CS)
I like the redesign, but it looks out of place where it is located next to a lot of simple
brick buildings. It is also very different than the original theatre.

After looking at the exterior of the building, I wasn’t expecting a more Asian design in
the interior. I like it though it fits with the dramatic feelings of a theatre.

There weren’t any women

Shakespeare was an actor. The term that is used to refer to actors is “Players”.
3. How were the seating arrangements for the audience? How did one get a good
seat? ​(CS)
The seating arrangements for the audience was on a first come first serve basis. There
weren’t any reserved seating like there is today.
4. What would the audience do if they did not like a performance? ​(CS)
If the audience didn’t like the performance, they would throw anything that they had
handy at the performers. They would also hiss and shout on occasion.

○ Start with the word "Thou."
○ Next, take a phrase/word from the first column to begin your insult
○ Continue by adding something from the second column
○ Finish it up royally with something from the third column.

translate it: what did it mean?

Romeo Romeo was the son of Montague/Lady Montague (feuding with


Capulets).

Juliet Juliet was the daughter of Capulet/Lady Capulet (feuding with


Montagues).

Friar Laurence Friar Laurence was the person who was responsible for
marrying Romeo and Juliet to hopefully bring together the
families.

Mercutio Mercutio was a close friend of Romeo and was related to the
prince.
Tybalt Tybalt was part of the Capulet family who despised the
Montagues.

Nurse Nurse was a person who cared after Lady Capulet, trusted by
Capulets.

Benvolio Benvolio was Romeo’s caring cousin.

Paris Paris was the person that was supposed to marry Juliet,
supported by Capulets.
