Summer Quarter
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
GREETINGS DEAR NEA-DALLAS MEMBERS;
The Midday Express Train is on the downwards slope with the finishing of a successful
2018-2019 school year! T seems like a few weeks ago that we began this trip, and here
we are putting the finishing touches on what we did with glee at our different schools
in Dallas ISD.
These latter weeks, we celebrated Administrators’ Day, Teacher Appreciation Week,
and Nurse’s Appreciation Week with a lot of beautiful happenings at our diverse
schools. We would like to take the time to “thank” each administrator, teacher, and
educational professional support staff who had been on this journey with us. We say
“kudos” to our librarians, our bus drivers, as well as our cafeteria workers. We say “hats
off” to our custodians, monitors, and substitute teachers…truly to everyone who
taught, advocated for and touched a student’s life this year. We cannot help but be
thankful for each and everyone of you!
We reached our summit with STAAR, ACPs, and AP Exams for this year as a culmination
of all the efforts that we had put into inculcating what our students needed by
perfecting those strategies and differentiations that were sure would pay off in the
zenith of their education.
There were Proms and Graduations that we all participated in as we observed our
students reach the pinnacles of their accomplishments from Pre-K to high school. We
saw the confidence and the poise that we could recognize as having helped them with
along the way to this point.
It is now time to go home, to go back to school for some, or just relax for others for the
few weeks that we have this summer. We will reenergize, refresh, reinvigorate
ourselves as we take in some breathtaking literatures or panoramas for the summer.
In closing, I say Thank You! once more to all for meeting the challenges with that smile
on your faces, and the aplomb that our students were all going to be successful.

DISD 2018-2019 SUMMER SCHEDULE for CENTRAL STAFF:
Central Staff employees will work a four-day work week and the District will close on Fridays
during a portion of the summer. Central office hours during the summer will be 7am until 6pm,
Monday through Thursday.
• Monthly Employees – employees paid monthly will work the four-day work week from June
3 through August 2, 2019 and resume their regular work hours on August 5, 2019.
• Biweekly Employees – employees paid biweekly will work a four-day work week from June
7 through August 8, 2019, NOT working on June 7th if they participate in the four-day. They
will resume their regular work schedule August 9, 2019.
• The District will be closed for Summer Break from July 1 – 5, 2019.
Unless otherwise approved by your Chief, employees are not allowed to work for pay while
the District is closed. July 4th is a holiday, and employees will report back to work on July 8th.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND supervisors may require employees to change their daily work schedule,
work overtime and/or work on Fridays for operational needs, instead of adhering to the summer
schedule. It is the employee’s responsibility to consult the supervisor for the start, end, and lunch
times for their daily work schedule during the summer.
NEA-DALLAS WILL ALSO BE CLOSED ON FRIDAYS FROM JUNE 3 – AUGUST
2, 2019 and JULY 1 - 5, 2019. Our summer office hours will be 8:30 am until 5:00 pm
Monday through Thursday. TSTA will still be able to be reached 7am – 7pm at 1-877-
ASK-TSTA, Monday – Friday.

We have an abundance of questions of whether to sign a document or not.
Sign everything, with the exception of a letter of resignation without talking to
TSTA staff or the Help Center (Legal). If you have any doubts--simply write your
signature and then add "for receipt only"--this phrase simply means that you
received the letter, but it does not mean that you agree or disagree with the
content. It only means that you received it.
Get a copy of everything you sign. If you are unable to get a copy take a picture
on your phone.

The 140th TSTA HoD was a Success! On to the Representative
Assembly in July!!

On the weekend of April 26th – 28th, we celebrated our 140th HoD (House of
Delegates) Convention at the Embassy Suites in Frisco, TX. Over 300 teachers,
educational professionals and administrators were present to rally the call for
more funding for our Public Schools in Texas from our Legislators in Austin.
We were also asking for raises for all employees in our school districts, no merit
pay for teachers, and increasing the teachers’ retirement benefits. These were just
some of the items on the agenda being discussed that weekend.
This well attended convention was presided over by our State President: Mr. Noel
Candelaria, our State Vice-President: Ms. Ovidia Molina, and our Executive
Director: Mr. Richard Kouri.
At NEA-Dallas, we received two School Bell Awards. Accolades were given to Eva-
Marie Ayala and Corbett Smith, both for Outstanding Continuous Coverage at the
Dallas Morning News. The Honorable Dan Micciche received the TSTA Social
Justice Patriot Award for his outstanding work over the years as a Trustee on the
Dallas ISD School Board.
Our members are encouraged to keep up with the weekly News Briefs sent to us
from Austin. Know what the House is saying as well as what the Senate is saying!
Please also know what is going on here with the proposed Dallas ISD budgets that
Dr. Michael Hinojosa said he was to bring to the Trustees this May. I urge you to
attend and speak at some of these Board Meetings. Our voices count!!!
NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly is July 3rd – 7th at the George R.
Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de Las Américas, Houston, TX 77010. Our
Texas Delegation is at the Hilton Post Oak by the Galleria there. Should you have
time, please come down for even a day to see what it is like with 11,000 – 12,000
educators from around the fifty (50) states all advocating for Strong Public Schools,
more financing from our states to fund our schools so that we can better educate
our students, just pick your topic and join us!

Mini Summer Workshops
NEA-Dallas will be hosting mini workshops this summer in the office.
Please see the calendar on page 2 for dates.
Workshops will begin at 9 am and end at 3 pm.
Each workshop will be 45 minutes to 1 hour long with a break in between.
You are welcome to stay for one or all of them.

Living Beyond Dreams/Expectations

Despite being born and raised in public housing to a divorced
mother and the sixth child of nine. I’m living beyond my
dreams and expectations. I’m enjoying every minute of life as
a life-long learner and giving to others. With faith, support of
family, and the National Education Association, I enjoy every
minute of my career in education.
I never thought I would have a career in education because as a child I was
referred to special education several times. My mom was always asking, “what
do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer was always, a psychiatrist.
She never discouraged our dreams. She led by example by never giving up and
emphasizing the importance of education. After having nine children, she
earned her GED, became a nurse and a cosmetologist. She is my example of
pure tenacity. My senior year in high school I was in a car accident that left me
with both legs and my left arm broken. I had screws and rods in my legs for
two years. My family nursed me back to health. They never left my side and
helped me learn to walk again. This accident altered my college plans. Instead
of going off to university, I attended a local college majoring in business
management.
Two years later I got my heart’s desire to attend the University of Arkansas at
Pine Bluff. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Afterwards I
relocated to Dallas and briefly worked as a retail manager. I also attended the
Dallas Police Academy. After trying my hand at several careers, it was
suggested I try teaching. My first year was in Wilmer-Hutchins ISD where I had
wonderful mentors. I tried and was successful, but I didn’t think it was my
calling. I taught several grades in several districts. My educational experience
extended to several districts, charter schools, and college. However, my mind
was still interested in the mental health field. Prairie View A&M had a
counseling program that catered to working adults. I relocated and taught in
Hempstead ISD, earned a Master of Arts in Counseling Education, returned to
Dallas.
When I felt it was time to give back, I moved back home. I moved to Arkansas
and taught in the Helena-West School district for two years. I relocated back to
Texas with a renewed spirit and finally accepted teaching is my calling. After
working as coach, principal, event coordinator, activities, a friend suggested
attending Concordia University and I earned another master’s degree in
Administration Education. The yearning to work in the mental health field
continued. I decided it was time to take the National Counseling Exam. I
passed on the first try. I applied to become a Professional License Counseling
while waiting I volunteered at the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Counseling Center.
I thought, what’s next? I really enjoy testing students and helping teachers. I
researched educational diagnostician which would allow me to utilize more of
my skills. I met with an advisor at Dallas Baptist and she offered me a
scholarship. Beside Early Childhood, Gifted and Talented, Counseling, and
Principal I added Diagnostic Education. Upon completing that I program, I
received an invitation to attend a training on Race, Equity, and Leadership at
Harvard University. I applied and was accepted.
I believe learning goes beyond the classroom and life is too short for fear. After
going on a mission trip to Panama my interest to learn more about of other
cultures continued as I traveled the United States, Israel, Egypt, China, Europe,
Peru, Jamaica, Bahamas, and Mexico. I have sky-dived, zip-lined, ridden an
electric bull, parasailed, and snow skied. I want to live life to the fullest. Life is
nothing without sharing your life experiences and passing on your knowledge.
Life has afforded me wonderful opportunities but it’s nothing if I don’t pass on
the love. I volunteer for several organizations when I have free time, Meals on
Wheels, Byron Nelson Golf Tournament, SPCA, and Oak Bible Fellowship
Counseling Center. There is joy in engaging with people with like mindsets of
giving and asking nothing in return.
No man in an island. Without the support of people in my life I don’t know if I
would still be in education. Throughout this journey, the National Education
Association has educated and supported me. The Association is always a
phone call, text, or email away answering any question I have. Delna Bryan has
been instrumental in my continuation in this field. She has given sound advice
and physically held my hand during trying times.

Reception celebrates outgoing board members, new trustees sworn
in to serve

Multiple generations of Dallas ISD leadership,
community members, teachers and principals
celebrated the accomplishments of outgoing Dallas ISD trustees Lew
Blackburn and Audrey Pinkerton at a farewell reception.
Blackburn for 18 years has represented District 5, which covers Oak Lawn,
West Dallas, Wilmer, Hutchins and portions of East Oak Cliff. Pinkerton for the
past three years represented District 7, which covers North Central Oak Cliff
and parts of West Dallas. Both trustees decided not to run for reelection.
Superintendent Michael Hinojosa thanked the trustees for their tireless service
supporting Dallas ISD schools and students.
“Dallas ISD is in its strongest financial shape and is now leading the way in
Texas in public education,” Hinojosa said. “That is something you should take
great pride in.”
An hour later at the regularly scheduled board meeting, trustees swore in
Maxie Johnson to serve District 5 and Ben Mackey to serve District 7.
After being sworn in, Mackey, who served as principal at the School for the
Talented and Gifted, thanked Pinkerton for her service and gave a shoutout to
his former students in attendance at the board meeting.
“It’s safe to say I’ve learned more from you all than you have learned from me,
and I’m grateful for you sharing your time, energy and dedication with me,”
Mackey told his former students.
Johnson, who also serves as a pastor, thanked Blackburn for his many years of
service and said he would continue his tradition of doing great things for kids.
“The community sent me down here to do a job. That job is to advocate for
safe learning environments, equitable resources, quality programs, true
transparency and accountability,” Johnson said. “I’m going to come here and
do exactly what you asked me to do.”
A term on the Dallas ISD board of trustees lasts three years and is unpaid.
