Construction Management

Why is a Construction Manager important in everyday life? Well, think about where you

live. Most people live in a residential building which can be a single-family home, a hotel, a

townhouse, a multi-family home, or an apartment. All of these are great examples of how a

Construction Manager helps provide shelter and manages each project from start to finish.

Becoming a Construction Manager is a reliable career path because people will always need

shelter. Plus, there is not really a downside of a Construction Manager because they are just

involved in everyday life.

What does a Construction Manager do? A Construction Manager is important to increase

efficiency and productivity; they prepare cost estimates, budgets, and work timetables.

Construction Managers also supervise and coordinate various projects including public,

residential, commercial, and industrial structures. From start to finish, Construction Managers

collaborate among the fellow employees, calculate pricing, supervise the employees, and the

plan for the structure.

Construction Managers assist in the beginning stages too, even before the first nail. They

help choose architects and subcontractors to help complete the job. It is obviously very important

the the Manager choose the right person for the job. This helps keep the task running smoothly,

on time, and on budget.

Speaking of budgets, the Construction Manager plays an important role in this area. They

track expenses ensuring that the project stays on budget. If something unexpected occurs that

will impact the budget or the timeline, the Manager will make adjustments to keep everything in

line.

A Construction Manager involves a ton of leadership. Leadership is the action of leading

a group of people or an organization. They offer guidance on completing a task properly and

efficiently. Leaders most prominently display commitment, passion, empathy, honesty, and

integrity all during a project.

Most people think the CTE industry doesn’t pay well or that you aren’t intelligent if

you’re in this industry. There is nothing true about either of those thoughts. On average, based on

information provided in August of 2017 by census.gov, a U.S. household makes an income of

about $57,617 annually and $21.43 hourly. Based on information also provided in August of

2017 by BLS.gov, a Construction Manager makes a household income of about $101,000

annually and $48-$56 hourly.

Great communication also contributes to being a great Construction Manager because it

can help form a great working relationship between the manager and staff. The manager will

need to be able to effectively communicate goals, safety measures, and procedures to the team.

Of course, technology will play a role in communication also as our community continues to

modernize methods of communication such as tablets, laptops, etc. But, if the manager is

successful, especially in this industry, there is a much lower risk of injury or death.

According to the book called "Career Ideas For Teens In Architecture And Construction"

by Diane Lindsey Reeves, Don Rauf, and Gail Karlitz, safety is number one in everyday life. It

explains the importance and how it relates to construction management. Not only do

Construction Managers maintain procedures themselves to aid in better safety practices but they

also invest in additional safety managers intended to focus on ensuring a safe work environment

for construction workers at job sites. At the direction of the Construction Manager, the safety

managers provide personal protective equipment or PPE. PPE can include a hard hat, safety

glasses, earplugs, and sometimes a particular mask for painting, smelting, etc. The items are

imperative to prevent accidents from occurring.

Another benefit of a Construction Manager is giving clients a single point of contact for

everything going on. No one wants to have to contact 50 different people about 50 difference

facets of the project. A single point of contact not only allows the client to question or express

ideas but it also allows the Construction Manager to be a single point of contact for his staff

when questions arise.

Surprisingly, despite the importance of Construction Managers to all building structures,

there is actually a widespread labor shortage in this industry. The industry is struggling to find

qualified and skilled workers. An organization’s success is directly tied to the ability to execute

projects and satisfy customers - both of which are key responsibilities of the Construction

Manager.

Without a Construction Manager, there will not be any residential areas, hospitals,

business buildings, and more. As you can see, they are important to everyday life. We need more

people to become a Construction Manager because there is a shortage, unfortunately. You can

make a great profit, have a great amount of safety, and gain knowledge of leadership,

communication, and some other beneficial characteristics that will be useful in life.
