EE-II Lab Report # 04 Section: B

EXPERIMENT NO. 04:

To Determine Settleable Solids In wastewater Sample:

 Defination:
Settleable Solids is the term applied to the material settling out of suspension
within a defined period.
Or
The solid particle which settle after some time is called settleable suspended soild.

 Purpose:
This parameter gives us information about the amount of suspended matter in
surface waters, domestic and industrial wastewater which is settleable under
gravitational force. In other words, this is the portion of solids in a water sample which
can be removed from water under gravitational force.
 Sources:
 Sewage
 Domestic and industrial waste
 Soil Erosion
 Road Run off
 Environmental Significance:
 Unpalatable
 Aesthetics
 Water Clarity
 Eutrophication
 To meet Regulation of Waste water
 For treatment Process
 Unit:
 ml/L

EE-II Lab Report # 04 Section: B

 Imhoff Cone
 Sample
 Sample Bottle
 Procedure:
1. First of all take 1ml of waste water.
2. Then Take a imhoff cone.
3. Put the sample in imhoff cone.
4. Then shake and mix and place it there for 45 mints.
5. After 45 mint agitate the cone so that the solid that are stuck to cone sides settle
at bottom.
6. Further wait 15 mints so that particle settle.
7. Take the reading to the point where solid are visible.
8. Note the reading and proceed calculations.
 Calculation and Observation:
Settleable solid = 2.3 ml
 Comments:
The settleable soilds in waste water came 2.3 ml.
 It means 0.23% of the sample settle out of 100%.
 It shows that the water is wastewater and it not safe to drink because it contain
solid particle like algae, Silt, Sand, Organic matter.
