Assessment Reflection

I found Chloe D. and Natasha's lesson on alternative assessments to be helpful. I think

they did a wonderful job of explaining alternative assessments and how they can be an effective

evaluation tool. I also enjoyed how they included an alternative assessment as their formative

(the posters on different forms of alternative assessments). I also found their topic to be helpful

because I believe that alternative assessments are one of the most effective forms of assessments

and I was interested in learning more. From a student perspective I believe alternative

assessment to show deeper understanding because unlike pen and paper assessments they rely

more on understanding and application of knowledge opposed to memorization that usually goes

along with the typical pen and paper test.

I believe Jamie and Maria's assessment to be one of the most effective and relevant

assessments. I found it effective and relevant because the questions they had on the test reflected

the material they taught us as well as their learning objectives. The directions and rubric on their

assessment were also clear and easy to follow. This made it easier for the class to effectively

complete their assessment.

As a whole class I was very impressed with us. I believe we did a great job coming

prepared and ready for our lessons. I was especially impressed with Olivia's group and their

ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. As far as the content or our lessons I think we all
did a great job with researching our topics and then creating lessons that explained the topic in a

meaningful and relevant way. I was also impressed with the amount of us that included prior

teaching tools to our lessons, like Maria and Jamie's use of an energizer to begin their lesson on a

Monday morning.

During my lesson we used an interactive slide show called pear deck. The pear deck was

used to gage the students prior knowledge and then formatively assess understanding. I believe

this was an effective part of our lesson because it forces students to be engaged as we go through

the slide show. It also shows us where the students are as we go through a lecture which made it

easier to clear up any misunderstandings or confusion surrounding the new topic. Another thing I

believe was effective was our assessment. Our assessment was to have students use the GRASPS

method to devise their own assessment for any age group on any topic. I believe this was

effective because most students did well on the assessment (granted they followed the directions

and used the provided stem statements). I also believe it was effective because the easiest way to

tell if the class understands how to use the GRASPS method to create an assessment is to have

the class do just that.

While creating our lesson and assessment on GRASPS I learner what GRASPS stands for

and that it is a tool that teachers can use to create assessments. I also learned how to create an

assessment and rubric of my own to go along with a lesson. I also learned quite a few things

from my peers lessons. One thing being the importance and effectiveness of peer reviewing as a

form of assessment. Another being several different forms of alternative assessment such as

poster, bulletin boards, etc that I can use with my own class as a future educator.
If I could do something differently next time I would choose different partners in order to

get out of my comfort zone. I enjoy working with the people I did this lesson with but I’ve

noticed I have a tendency to always partner up with them. I believe it would be beneficial to me

if in the future I try and step out of my comfort zone by opening myself up to work with new

people and be exposed to the new ideas that come with them.

I believe I have made progress towards meeting the learning targets for this unit. I know

that I have made progress because I can explain that the role of an assessment and evaluation

tools in education is for the teacher to be able to track their students progression and

understanding along with their own progression and effectiveness. I can also explain how the

interpretation of assessments is used to help the teacher make informed decisions on the

effectiveness of their own instruction. I also believe I have made progress in being able to use

content based standards and competencies to plan and prepare developmentally appropriate

instruction and assessments that meet the needs of diverse learners. I believe I displayed this

progress when I helped my partners create a lesson and assessment on high school level topics

for a high school class.

I believe the greatest challenge I will face regarding assessments in my future as an

educator will be probably trying to come up with differents forms of assessments in order to keep

my future class interesting and exposed to a variety of diverse learning tools. I believe this will

be a challenge because I believe it will be hard for me to think outside of the generic forms of

assessment.
