DESCRIPTION

The Hitachi electrical system is a 24 Volt negative

ground system with two 12 Volt batteries
connected in series to supply 24 Volts to the
starter motor and to the electrical accessories. A
24 Volt alternator with an integral voltage
regulator is installed in this system for powering
the accessories and keeping the batteries charged.
The various circuits that make up this electrical
system can be traced on the electrical schematics
supplied with the service manual.
12 volts are wired to the battery equalizer
protected terminal to supply the Allison CEC ECU
and any accessories (Radio, CB, etc).

Accumulator Bleed-Down Timer

When the truck is shutdown, the Bleed down Timer energizes the
Bleed down solenoid valve in the RCB valve, to allow the hydraulic
fluid stored in the steering accumulator to flow back to tank.
Battery Converter

Ground
Wire

The Battery Converter/Equalizer converts 24 Volt battery supply to 12 Volts for

Engine ECM, Transmission TCM and accessories and ensures that all batteries
charge and discharge equally.
NOTE: The Ground wire must be disconnected when welding on the frame.
Hoist Controller

The hoist controller is supplied 24 Volts by the circuit board through fuse 21. The controller
interprets the operator’s commands through signals received from the hoist lever. The
controller will then send a specific pulsed voltage signal to the Proportional Valve’s Pulse
Width Modulating Valves to pilot the Directional Control Valve.
When the hoist lever is pulled into the raise position, voltage is sent through the relay to
the contronic ECU. The ECU will send a signal to the audible alarm if the shift lever is not in
neutral (whether hauler is stopped or not). The ECU will also send a signal to CEC to inhibit
reverse. Contronic also adds 1 load to the “Load Count” field in the Information 2 screen.
Hoist Controller Calibration

The hoist controller has to be calibrated

to each model Hauler after any of the
following is replaced.
1. Hoist Controller
2. Hoist Lever
3. Circuit Board
This slide shows the relationship between the Hoist lever position/voltage input from the
lever/LED operation/pilot pressure from respective PWM. When installing a new
controller, the U1 rotary switch must be set on position C for an EH1700 prior to
installation.
Inclinometer

The inclinometer receives 5 volts from the Contronic ECU. On perfectly flat we will
see 2.5 volts out for the X axis and 2.5 volts out for the Y axis.
Hoist Lever Assembly

The hoist lever receives 5 volts of power

from the hoist controller through a 3 wire
harness. The lever assembly consists of a
variable rheostat that changes the 5 volts
of power to a voltage ranging between 0.5
Volts to 4.5 Volts depending upon lever
position. The lever returns the changed
voltage to the controller through the 3-
wire harness.
Body Proximity Switch

This is the replacement to the body-up “Whisker” switch. This switch is referred
to as a Proximity Switch. The proximity switch is located on the top of the cab
near the front right corner. This switch magnetically senses when a steel object is
within its range (approx. 2”). The sensor is a solid-state device, therefore there
aren’t any contacts opening and closing inside. The proximity switch is located to
sense a canopy stiffener. When the canopy stiffener is within range, the proximity
switch activates to cut voltage to the “BUR” relay and to the body-up light,
indicating that the body is on the frame rails. This switch is also used for input
information in the Load Weigh option.
The ECU is used to monitor Hitachi systems, and to interface with
the engine and transmission computers. The ECU is completely
programmed Hitachi. This ECU has settings for different Hauler
models and is reprogrammable. Hitachi service personnel will have
to install the latest program when installing or replacing an ECU.
The ECU has over-voltage protection, but is recommended to be
disconnected when welding or boosting. When supply voltage falls
below 19 volts the operation of the ECU can become unstable.

Programming Switches
A small cover on the ECU protects two
switches. Switch #1 is the switch on the
left, Switch #2, on the right recalibrates
the Contronic system for different tire
sizes and differential ratios.

Pressure Transducers
The pressure transducers used in the Hitachi Systems are similar in
design to one another, only the pressure range of the transducer may
be different. They all typically have connector pins identified as PIN A ,
PIN B, and PIN C.
PIN A - is supplied 24volts
PIN B - is supplied ground
PIN C - is the return voltage from the transducer
For troubleshooting, first verify proper supply voltage and ground.
Then after determining the transducer pressure range check the
transducer output voltage.
0-500psi, 0-1000psi, 0-5000psi,0-10000psi
The output voltage should range from .95v to 4.76v
example: 0psi=.95v and 500psi = 4.76v if testing a good 0-500psi
pressure transducer.
