SURFACE TREATMENTS − APPLICATION OF

PROTECTIVE COATINGS (PWA 830) − SPOP−149

Task 70−41−03−380−007:

1. SPOP 149 − Application Of Polytetrafluoroethylene Resin (Teflon)

Coating (AMS 2515)

WARNING: DO NOT BREATHE ATOMIZED MATERIAL.

WARNING: KEEP CIGARETTES, CIGARS, AND/OR OTHER SMOKING TOBACCOS

AWAY FROM THE SPRAY AREA. AFTER CONTACT WITH
MATERIALS, WASH HANDS CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU SMOKE.

WARNING: TOXIC FUMES, FROM OVENS USED FOR FUSING COATINGS, MUST
BE ABLE TO FLOW TO THE OUTDOORS SO THAT PERSONNEL DO
NOT BREATHE THESE GASES.

NOTE: Do not use this SPOP on aluminum parts.

NOTE: Keep materials refrigerated when not in use. Material

can be sprayed as received or be diluted up to 10 percent
of volume with distilled water to reduce viscosity.

A. Procedure

R (1) Degrease part with SPOP 209. Refer to 70−21−00,

R SPOP−209 (Task 70−21−00−110−041).

R (2) Remove damaged coating and/or lightly abrasive blast

R the part to prepare the surface; use one of the
R procedures that follow:

NOTE: Use a new mixture of abrasives for best results.

Do not use a used mixture.

R (a) SPOP 9. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−09 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−002).

R (b) SPOP 10. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−10 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−010).

R (c) SPOP 19. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−19 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−009).

R (d) SPOP 218. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−218 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−004).

R (e) SPOP 219. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−219 (Task

(3) Preheat part at 740° − 760°F (393° − 404°C) for 15

minutes.

(4) Air cool to room temperature.

CAUTION: PRIMER ACIDS WILL CORRODE METAL PORTIONS OF

SPRAY GUN. FLUSH GUN IMMEDIATELY AFTER EACH
USE.

(5) Apply PMC 1715 primer coating to a thickness of 0.0002

− 0.0004 inch (0.0051 − 0.010 mm). Use a spray gun
with stainless steel fluid passages, needle, and tip,
plus filtered air.

(6) Air dry or dry in oven at 180° − 200°F (82° − 93°C) until
a dry, non−glossy appearance and medium brown color is
obtained.

(7) Bake at 700° − 750°F (371° − 399°C) until primer coating

is completely fused.

NOTE: When completely fused, the primer coating on

steel and titanium parts will appear blue−green
in color.

(8) Cool to room temperature.

(9) Using a standard touch−up spray gun and filtered air,

apply coating of AMS 2515 finish dispersion up to a
maximum of 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) thick.

NOTE: If too heavy a dispersion is applied, mud

cracking of the surface will result. If this
occurs, do as follows.

R (a) Remove damaged coating and/or lightly abrasive

R blast the part to prepare the surface; use one of
R the procedures that follow:

NOTE: Use a new mixture of abrasives for best

results. Do not use a used mixture.

R (b) SPOP 9. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−09 (Task

R 70−21−00−120−002).

R (c) SPOP 10. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−10 (Task

all water is evaporated and there is a dry, non−glossy
appearance.

NOTE: When dry, finish coating will be white.

appear light amber or transparent. Primer coat
will remain visible through finish coat.

(12) Cool to room temperature in air.

(13) Apply coating of AMS 2515 finish dispersion and do the

subsequent steps again until you get the specified
coating thickness.
