Aims
The CP enables students to
• Participate in sustained, self-directed
inquiry within a global context
• Generate creative new insights and
develop deeper understandings
through in-depth investigation
• Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and
knowledge required to complete a
project over an extended period of time
• Communicate effectively in a variety of
situations
• Demonstrate responsible action

take pride in their accomplishments

Types of Service Learning Action
• Direct Service: interaction that involves
people, the environment or animals
• Indirect Service: actions will benefit
community but direct interaction is not
necessary (i.e. redesigning a community
organizations website)
• Advocacy: speak on behalf of a cause or
concern to promote action on an issue
of public interest
• Research: collect information through
varied sources, analyze data and report
on a topic of importance to influence
policy or practice

Structure
• 3-4-month time frame
• Culminating presentation for school
AND community (day and evening)
• Everybody (48) coaches 3-5 students
• Introduction- happens for entire grade
level at once
• Set days in advance where 8th grade will
have “no new learning” so coaches can
pull students during coach PLC time
• facilitated PLC’s will not occur during
weeks of meetings
• Meetings will occur more frequently
during the beginning and towards end
of the project
• Informal check-in throughout
• Afterschool sessions for support and
technology offered (scheduled and
shared in advance)
